Easily the most comprehensive volume of Marvell's poetry available
By Michael Birman
Andrew Marvell is usually lumped in with the "Metaphysical Poets" in English Literature classes. Poets as wildly disparate as John Donne, George Herbert, Henry Vaughn, Richard Crashaw and Thomas Carew are lumped in right along with him. The inevitable question: what exactly is metaphysical about their poetry? Well, it seems that they are witty (but not George Herbert, he's deadly earnest in his religious poetry). They are stylistically elaborate if not downright strange in their approach to poetry and language. And it appears that they are unusually inventive.

The source of the label "Metaphysical Poet" actually has its origin in a charge leveled at John Donne by the poet John Dryden, 60 years his junior and no doubt feeling his oats. Dryden complained that when it came to women, instead of allowing for nature to take its course while they read his poetry (I won't even begin to speculate about what that means), Donne was prone to perplexing their minds with philosophical speculations. He "affects the metaphysicals". In other words, Donne is too clever by half, at least for the ladies (and that's why if Dryden ever comes back, he's toast). The bottom line is that there really is nothing particularly metaphysical about this group of 17th century poets other than a general speculative nature.

Marvell is best known for his lyric poems and the poems written essentially as panegyrics for Oliver Cromwell. Just about all of Marvell's surviving poetry is based on a single source: Miscellaneous Poems, published in 1681, three years after the poet's death. These were assembled by Marvell's putative wife, who claimed that she had assembled them from his papers. She asserted textual accuracy and guaranteed their authenticity. All of the poems that are confidently ascribed to the canon are included here, These include the 18 poems in Greek and one in Latin. Several of the Restoration verse satires, for which attribution to Marvell has been made over the centuries, or that have been associated with his name, are also included here. Some variants are included in an appendix.

As always in the Longman's Annotated Poets series, the headnotes are informative, the annotation is exhaustive and all of the additional bibliographic, historical context and publishing information is extensive, up-to-date and accurate. Marvell's poetry often has a slightly mysterious, elusive quality which makes it something of a challenge to grasp. Even Marvell's most famous poem - To His Coy Mistress - is something of a cipher. A straightforward celebration of Eros? A carpe diem instruction? An Epicurean manifesto? The four pages of annotation that accompany this allegedly simple famous poem examine all of these possibilities and more. If you enjoy reading Marvell or are studying his work, this is definitely the book to get. The Poems of Andrew Marvell is the most comprehensive volume of his poetry currently available.
