The operation of forging hammers, from the smallest to the largest size, has received a great increase in its usefulness by the substitution of compressed air for the discomforting element of steam.

In the torpedo service compressed air has become a standard element of control in the submarine boats for ventilation, buoyancy, and vertical direction of steerage; it gives life to the adjuncts of marine warfare.

I found this book fascinating. On the one hand, it's both a history of the phone booth -- how it evolved as a technology and became ubiquitous, only to begin to disappear (or will it?). On the other hand, the book is a cultural analysis -- examining how the phone booth has played a captivating role in our imaginations in films like The Matrix and in the origin of Superman. The book moves at a quick pace. It's filled with scenes and descriptions that will show you a whole new story about the phone booth.

A Fitting Elegy for a Vanishing Icon

A fantastic history of a vanishing cultural icon. By turns informative, elegiac, playful and provocative, Kelly's book makes plain just how integral this simple object has been to our domestic and public spaces since the early 20th century. At the same time, she makes it clear just how far we've changed that such a thing is no longer. Filled with questions of privacy and longing, and thoroughly enjoyable throughout, this is easily one of the best books of nonfiction I've read this year.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, Stan Ellsworth grew up with the stories of American history. His family lineage includes such historic luminaries as Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Daniel Boone, and Davy Crockett. Stan earned a bachelors degree in history, played and coached football, and then became a high school history teacher. When he was approached by a film producer, he turned his attention to acting. But he found that his love for history and teaching young people still called to him. In combining those passions, along with riding his Harley, Stan Ellsworth has found his dream job in American Ride.

Impossible to read

Great poems, sure, but that's not what the one star is all about. The way they're set makes them literally impossible to read--jumbled together like prose, incorrect line breaks, and that's no to mention how they're interrupted by square-bracketed footnotes, there's no chapter markings, nothing. Unusable, worthless. WW deserved better.

And there is truth in the idea; he is indeed a very prefatory sort of person. He always gives the explanation before the incident; but so, for the matter of that, does the Gospel of St. John. For Bernard Shaw, as for the mystics, Christian and heathen (and Shaw is best described as a heathen mystic), the philosophy of facts is anterior to the facts themselves. In due time we come to the fact, the incarnation; but in the beginning was the Word.
This produces upon many minds an impression of needless preparation and a kind of bustling prolixity. But the truth is that the very rapidity of such a man's mind makes him seem slow in getting to the point. It is positively because he is quick-witted that he is long-winded. A quick eye for ideas may actually make a writer slow in reaching his[Pg 8] goal, just as a quick eye for landscapes might make a motorist slow in reaching Brighton. An original man has to pause at every allusion or simile to re-explain historical parallels, to re-shape distorted words. Any ordinary leader-writer (let us say) might write swiftly and smoothly something like this: "The element of religion in the Puritan rebellion, if hostile to art, yet saved the movement from some of the evils in which the French Revolution involved morality." Now a man like Mr. Shaw, who has his own views on everything, would be forced to make the sentence long and broken instead of swift and smooth. He would say something like: "The element of religion, as I explain religion, in the Puritan rebellion (which you wholly misunderstand) if hostile to art—that is what I mean by art—may have saved it from some evils (remember my definition of evil) in which the French Revolution—of which I have my own opinion—involved morality, which I will define for you in a minute." That is the worst of being a really universal sceptic and philosopher; it is such slow work. The very forest of the man's thoughts chokes up his thoroughfare. A man must be orthodox upon most things, or he will never even have time to preach his own heresy.

About the Author
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Enjoyable disagreement

Since Chesterton and Shaw so vehemently disagreed with each other on many topics, one would expect this quick text to be filled with antagonism. Instead, it is a delightful explanation of Shaw's background, biography and beliefs, told in a gentle, light-hearted manner. Chesterton shows a great respect for his adversary, while making clear his own views through quite a few of the one-sentence quotables for which he is well known.

Words vs presentation.

You can't go wrong with Chesterton; particularly when he is describing one of his contemporaries. Like the majority of Chesterton's biographies, this book won't tell you many "facts" about GBS, but it will present a solid, complete, and enjoyable picture of Shaw as a man: giving his opinions and criticizing them.
I only give it three stars because the page layout is - frankly - defective. The print is offset to the outer side of each page. If you can ignore this (I cannot), the book is perfectly accessible.

X (Kinsey Millhone Book 24): A Sidekick to the Sue Grafton Novel is an absolute must if you are reading or have read X or are just looking for a resource to the novel. The Sidekick includes secret meanings, underlying themes, alternate endings and a possible sequel. Literally everything you need to fully understand the novel and so much more. It was so great to spend more time with Kinsey Millhone (one of my favorite private investigators), and explore her motives. The Sidekick is like having your own book club in your living room.

Does exactly what it needs to.

Always been a fan of the Alphabet novels but I must admit it can be a bit hard to follow sometimes, especially the protagonist's growth in between novels (as is the case with any series even half as long as this).

I started reading Sue Grafton's books quite a few years ago so I thought I'd grab this sidekick before starting X, just to make sure that I could have a little refresher in an attempt to avoid finding myself stumbling over any important parts (the last time I read a book in the series before X was many months ago). In that regard, it definitely does the job. Plenty of explanations and a deep, thoughtful analysis of the plot, characters, major themes, and writing style but, and most importantly for me, it's also written in a way that doesn't spoil it for the reader while staying consistent and linear. Overall, very happy.

In-depth analysis is provided on the characters and their motivations, for example how each has secrets they hold against another that are forgotten when the two lovers become entangled in passion. Eva's affair with Brett Kline and Gideon's past history of abuse are both explored on a deeper level.

Additionally, this sidekick provides some unique alternate possibilities, including an alternate ending where Eva fully pursues the affair she is having and leaves Gideon behind. The outcome could very well have led to Gideon's suicide. Also, a theme is outlined which poses the question is it better to take care of your own troubles, or reach out to others? Since some of the romance in the novel as well as side plots seems to fizzle out, these are nice additions to the sidekick. Character analysis is also provided. Very well done!

Best read while reading "Captivated By You"

I started reading the crossfire series about 3 months ago, and I'm captivated (pun intended). I was happy to see there was a sidekick for "Captivated By You" and gave it a read. I liked the how the sidekick breaks down the book and provides additional insights. The themes and symbols section, as well as the character guide are very helpful. This sidekick is great while reading the book, as well as reading after you have completed the book. There are sections instructing you to "read this section while still reading the book and read this section after". The character pages were helpful, and the alt endings were amusing. There are also suggestions for other books/series you may enjoy included at the end, which has led me to some great books and authors.

Captivated By You Summarized Superbly

Ok, moment of truth. I am not a fan of erotic novels and do not read them at all. That being said, I do want to be in the loop about the trending books out there without wading through all the sexual content. I want to get to know the story, understand the characters, and the struggles of the characters quickly.

I’ve turned to Sidekicks while reading books to add depth to my reading experiences before and decided to try reading a sidekick apart from the novel, GASP…. I know, shame on me.

But it gave me a deeper appreciate for this sidekick. Through it I was able to get acquitted with the characters, their obsessive ex's, their struggles with past scars, and their struggle to find balance in their new relationship. I was able to understand the sub-plots and the real living relationship between the characters without filling my mind with unwanted sex scenes.

The sidekick was very well written, and easily explained the differences and personalities between the characters as well as their relationships to one another. I loved how the author didn't "summarize" or dwell on the sexual aspects of the book and instead focused on the relationships and human interactions of the novel.
