This is it!

I couldn't put this book of poetry down! I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. Talk about a compelling book of narrative poetry. This is it. I also found the photographs really added another dimension to the "story." I highly recommend it for anyone interested in American wars, or great poetry, or both.

An amazing and important book of poetry

This amazing, important book of poetry vividly presents the experience of American Marines and Korean Civilians. The structure of the poems provide a framework upon which the imagery, emotion and meaning are woven. Within this volume there are two sets of poems. The first are poems that present the experience of an American combat marine from his first idealistic, frightened involvement to the disillusioned and tired veteran. The second, written using the author's adaptation of the Korean Sijo structure present the terror, tragedy and poignancy of a Korean woman struggling to survive invasion, flight, and then the experience of having to abandon her homeland and make a life in a new country. This book is all the more remarkable because it was written based upon interviews by the author with her father, capturing in the poetry his memories as a Marine fighting in Korea. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

Complete chapters are now given on "Chassis and Running Gear," "Clutches and Transmissions," Rear Axles and Differentials," while entirely new chapters on "Principles of Electricity and Magnetism," "The Automobile Storage Battery," and "Wheels, Rims and Tires," have been added.

No attempt has been made to cover all makes and models of cars and apparatus, but the purpose of offering instruction on the fundamental principles of automobile design, construction, and operation has been adhered to as far as possible.

Mr. Earl L. Consoliver, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has acted as co-author, taking the place of Mr. George W. Hobbs.

Public Domain book written in 1913

This feels like it's book two of a series but the other two books that Amazon offers have copyright dates after this one. The first chapter drops you right in the middle of a scene and it's a little disorienting at first. You get the idea of what's going on eventually, but the author alludes to previous events like there must be another book out there. I'm going to keep looking as it would be nice to get the details of what came before this portion of Polly's life.

This book is a slice of life story about an orphan who was adopted by her doctor and his new wife and what happens to her after she's been with them for about a year. You get a sense of what life was like for a working doctor during that time period and some of the social problems Polly had while being an adopted orphan and going to a private school that had girls from more wealthy families in it. Polly is about 10 years old in this book and over the course of the story meets a few cousins she didn't know she had and has to decide whether she wants to stay with Dr. Dudley and his wife (whom she loves dearly but aren't rich) and her "new" Uncle (who is). Will she choose an exciting lifestyle with no more wants or needs over love?

Polly kind of reminds me of Anne of Green Gables except that she doesn't have the orphan "nobody wants me" attitude. She's a little ray of sunshine and makes you smile when you read about her.

I'd recommend this book to young girls who want to know what it was like for girls of their age during another time period.

A regularized edition of an important collection

John Clare. The Rural Muse: Poems (1835). Kessinger Publishing, 2007. Paperback 175 pages. ISBN 0548704244.

The present book is a facsimile reprint of the original edition of 'The Rural Muse' of 1835 and I have given it 5 stars for its historic importance. But what we need to understand is that the poems as printed here are not the poems as they left Clare's hand.

From a much larger manuscript of 391 poems, 'The Midsummer Cushion', for which he hadn't been able to find enough subscribers, Clare, in 1834, sent a selection of 130 of its poems to his friend Mrs Eliza Emmerson in London. As anyone who has read anything about Clare knows, he paid very little attention to grammar, spelling, or punctuation, and to ready his raw text for 'polite' readers of the time it required considerable tidying-up. To be publishable at all the text had to be brought into line with the taste, prejudices, and expectations of an early 19th century audience.

Mrs Emmerson, therefore, and with the best of intentions, dutifully tidied up Clare's raw text and it was her revised version, with many of her own emendations and with her heavy punctuation, that appeared in 1835 as 'The Rural Muse.'

Unfortunately, Clare is not improved by regularization. It's true that when regularized, Clare's text becomes smoother and easier to read. His raw text, on the other hand, does slow us down and is at times difficult to read because it can present us with alternative readings depending upon where we decide to pause. But this is what makes it so interesting. Rather than being merely passive readers we become active and, in a sense, co-creators of the poem. And the very roughness of the raw text has a special flavor which is lost when the text is regularized and Clare is made to look and sound like everyone else.

Happily, an unregularized modern edition of The Rural Muse: Poems edited by R.K.R. Thornton was published in the UK by the Carcanet Press, Mid Northumberland Arts Group, in 1982. Those who would like an unregularized edition of 'The Midsummer Cushion' are referred to: The Midsummer Cushion (Fyfield Books) which was published by Carcanet Press in 1990.

These two books give us the texts of the poems as they are found in Clare's own manuscripts and minus the well-meant tampering of his contemporary editors. The raw texts do present a few minor difficulties at first, but these are soon overcome and readers will find that Clare's own versions provide a much more interesting reading experience than do those of his editors.

About the Author
Arthur Waley was a distinguished authority on Chinese and Japanese language and literature. He translated many poems and novels from these languages. He was honoured many times for his work by the Chinese and received the Queen's medal for poetry in 1953. His work includes Chinese Poems, Japanese Poetry, The Tale of Genji and Monkey, the translation of a sixteenth-century Chinese novel, which was turned into a major BBC television series.

Fine collection superseded

Arthur Waley is the most famous Sinologist this century, the man (other than Ezra Pound) who has done most in bringing Chinese poetry to the fore of Western public. Hence, no matter what, Waley's historical importance cannot be overestimated. And he is a competent all-round translator too, as this fine anthology demonstrates, one who has an uncanny ear of transforming Chinese rhythms and rhymes into naturalized English metrics.
Yet in the final analysis, most of Waley's work has been superseded by finer translations from Hinton and Watson. His English now strikes one with a certain archness (if still deceptively simple) which gives a somewhat falsified idea of the Chinese; in Li Po and Tu Fu, for example, his reproduction of their tone is uneven, seldom showing their difference in temperament or use of diction (incidentally, in Chinese one _can_ see the subtle differences in how either works). At times he "stretches out" Tu's metrics, making him less than succinct, or slurs over his use of an image.
Yet in his favorite poet Po Chu-I Waley does very well. Here is when his obvious talent in phrasing tastefully does the poet justice. Elsewhere, even if Waley can be faulted here and there, he is still very close lexically to the original.
To conclude, Waley's anthology is still worth getting, especially if you enjoy his translations. But supplementing it with either Watson's or Hinton's texts would probably give you a better idea of some poets.

A Sampler of Ancient Chinese Poetry

Kenneth Rexroth cited this book of translations in his "One Hundred Poems from the Chinese" as among a handful that are outstanding sources for those interested in Chinese poetry. I love the directness of the old Chinese poets, particularly their simplicity and accessibility -- at least as they have been translated today by people such as Rexroth. Those same qualities can be found in Waley's translations, where they have a seductively "commonplace" feel that both belies and accentuates their delicacy.
What I hadn't been prepared for, however, were Waley's introductory essays which were, like the poetry he translated, direct and unpretentious and , so, wonderfully informative.
Waley was one of the very first Westerners to undertake translations of ancient Chinese poetry, so, quite apart from the beauty of his work, he also holds an important position historically. This particular volume was first published in 1919.

Refreshing the roots of the mind.

Waley, who was one of the great Sinologists of the twentieth century, translated a wide variety of Eastern works but is perhaps best known for his translations of Chinese poetry. His '170 Chinese Poems,' a book which contains, among other riches, the marvelous poems of T'ao Ch'ien, Po Chu-I, and Wang Wei, has been reissued many times. And although we have seen other very fine translations of Chinese poetry from writers as diverse as A. C. Graham, Kenneth Rexroth, and Gary Snyder, none of them have had the impact of Waley. Chinese poetry, for many, is and always will mean Arthur Waley. His influence has been enormous.
I would attribute his success to two things. In the first place, there is the very special quality of his English, a quality impossible to describe. In the second place, Waley was a master at evoking an atmosphere, a feeling tone, that strikes one as authentically Chinese. So good was he at this that one sometimes gets the feeling, as one does when reading the poems of that other remarkable and far greater genius, the poet Emily Dickinson, a woman whose mind also had a very Chinese cast, that they must have been Chinese souls who had somehow strayed and ended up reincarnating in Western bodies.
My remark about Emily Dickinson's 'Chinese-ness' may raise some eyebrows. Perhaps it takes a certain amount of exposure to Eastern culture, particularly to Buddhist thought, to see this quality in her, but I find it everywhere. I find it, for example, in lines such as these, slightly adjusted since they should be set out as poetry :
"I cross till I am weary / A Mountain - in my mind - / More Mountains - then a Sea - / More Seas - And then / A Desert find -" (J550).
It is into this strange dreamscape in which a solitary figure moves through a vast, enigmatic, obstacle-filled, wearying land that, a few lines later, "Asiatic Rains" arrive to work their effect.
Perhaps it might not be too fanciful to suggest that the rains from the East which bring relief, and even understanding, to Emily Dickinson's persona in poem J550 can be equated with Waley's poems, poems which drifted through the Chinese sky of his mind to bring something needful to the "Desert" of the modern Western sensibility. Perhaps this was the real reason for his great success - he brought something that was missing from the mechanized and arid Western spirit, something that we all inwardly yearn for that has been lost in the West but that the Eastern tradition can provide in abundance.
I don't know, but whatever the case, Waley's Chinese poems do have a truly magical effect on all readers. Once you have been exposed to them you can never forget them.
The particular beauty of Waley's style, a style which despite its age still strikes one as modern, can be seen in a poem such as Po Chu-I's 'Passing T'ien-men Street in Ch'ang-an and Seeing a Distant View of Chung-nan Mountain,' a poem which has always been one of my favorites. It reads:
"The snow has gone from Chung-nan; spring is almost come. / Lovely in the distance its blue colours, against the brown of the streets. / A thousand coaches, ten thousand horsemen pass down the Nine Roads; / Turns his head and looks at the mountains, - not one man!"
Here is the infinitely precious color and marvel of a Nature that is blazing with life and beauty and consciousness, sadly set over against a busy-ness that is also ours, an obsession and total involvement exclusively with people and their multifarious doings that blinds us - a mindset that leads us to overlook the universe, to pass it by like Po Chu-I's horsemen without even noticing it.
Waley's Chinese poems captivate us. They are a gentle rain which trickles down to bathe and refresh the roots of our mind. I envy those who are coming to them for the first time.

Great book on IoT and Semiconductor ecosystem

As a foreword :- Based on many years of experience in the trenches of Semiconductors, Apek created a readable book covering the ins and outs and made a strong connection between Moore’s law and macroeconomic policy. Author is able to point out very clearly that without proper economic policies the future validity of this law is at best ambiguous.

This book gave me the map I was looking for so I could look ahead and navigate the ergonomics of IoT market to find the new jobs and IoT initiatives before they are announced - there are so many great points and combined research that it led me to look in places I would never have thought of without a guide!

So much of our business is learned from hit-or-miss experience--it's nice to see a comprehensive look at all the factors to be considered when drafting an economics of Semiconductor market. Particularly when the standard sales process is so counterproductive. You can't use manipulative techniques that are effective for selling dog food or soft drinks to the general public.

Apek touches on the huge number of factors and the social networking aspects of our trade. As he puts it:

'Sustaining Moore's Law: Uncertainty Leading to a Certainty of IoT Revolution' provides an excellent overview of the rapidly changing strategic environment in the semiconductor industry, and some sense of where things are headed. This book has a perspective on IoT that I hadn't seen before. Very creative use of combining technology and economics. Full of flaws

The data in this book is filled with errors, from dates to biographies. It has too many flaws to be considered a good reference source. A few examples; Ailsby states that Richard Glücks, the infamous inspector of the concentration camps made some sort of spectacular escape, in true life, Glücks killed himself in British captivity. Ailsby also states that Herbert Kappler (the head of the Gestapo in Rome) escaped from his prison cell in the -80s and has not been seen after that. And again Ailsby has got it all wrong. Kappler escaped in -77 and died of cancer in -78 in Germany.
It seems that Ailsby's primary source on the Knight's Cross winners was Jost Schneider's "Their Honour Was Loyalty" that is clear from the way he copies Schneider's text.
So my advice is that keep away from this rotten apple.

It's rather surprising that some reviewers say it's too pedantic or picky to point out the flat-out errors, misinformation, omissions, unattributed borrowings, and lack of citations in this propagandistic, sophomoric twaddle. One can get a far superior summary even on wikipedia of the individuals included by the author, including their actual careers, what they were charged with by the special-interest groups, and what their involvement was, if any. And placing some of the most able Waffen SS military commanders in the same list as the homeland security SS is arguable to start with. If a reader is interested in the topic, learn the actual facts concerning who invented, drew up hit lists in advance, staffed, 'investigated', gathered reams of provably false 'eye witness' testimony, fake 'evidence' and forced or faked 'confessions' in their so-called post-war war crimes prosecutions. And most of the information the author provides is from the charges brought, and has long since been proved false.

The object of this book is to compile a set of instructions for engineers, which will enable them to make electrical calculations for transmission lines with the least possible amount of work.

The chart and working formulas have for the most part been developed independently by the author. Where the same or similar methods have been previously published, the fact is generally stated in the footnotes, but it has not been found possible to make these references absolutely complete.

The second part of the book is for reference and contains the derivation of the principal formulas used in connection with transmission lines. As many recent articles on transmission lines make use of formulas which are only roughly approximate, or are even incorrect, a reliable collection of formulas, with the method of obtaining them, should be found valuable.

It should not be presumed, because the second part of the book requires the use of the integral calculus, that the working formulas will require a knowledge of higher mathematics. The first five or six chapters are complete in themselves, and are planned for the use of those who have an ordinary acquaintance with alternating-current calculations.

A Wonderful Find

Transmission Line Formulas for Engineering Students. The title just drew me in! I'm glad I did. This book is a treasure trove of transmission line engineering equations and their derivations. Herbert Dwight is the author and the book was first published in 1913! I appreciate old engineering resources like this because they contain original thinking from a time when things were done by hand using a slide rule, log tables, and other references. The book predates the renowned Westinghouse Transmission Reference. It will make a great addition to your library!
