Tales of diabolical contracts and other things.
By Michele L. Worley
This book is in print as I write this, as part of the Fantasy Masterworks edition of _Time and the Gods_; it is a collection of 18 short stories.
"A Tale of London" - in a reversal of the usual pattern, a sultan has asked his seer to relate to him a vision of the fabulous city of London.
"Thirteen at Table" - The ghosts of twelve women wronged by old Sir Richard Arlen have had dinner with him every night for the last thirty years.
"The City on Mallington Moor" - A rumor is spreading of a strange city of white marble appearing out of the mist.
"Why the Milkman Shudders When He Perceives the Dawn" - this is a tale told in the Hall of the Ancient Company of Milkmen when all the craft are assembled.
"The Bad Old Woman in Black" - What to do in the face of an omen of evil?
"The Bird of the Difficult Eye" - a tale of the only thief employed by West End jewellers since the distressing tale of Thangobrind (see _The Book of Wonder_).
"The Long Porter's Tale" - Gerald Jones, suffering from melancholy, went to a magician in London and was diagnosed with flux of time, and was recommended to take a day at the Edge of the World as treatment.
"The Loot of Loma" - The raiders didn't know that a priest's written curse had been slipped into their loot.
"The Secret of the Sea" - What do ships worship, and what temple do they go to?
"How Ali Came to the Black Country" - Many people may say that technology and pollution are modern devils, but how many people are serious enough to take the traditional steps to imprison devils?
"The Bureau D'Echanges De Maux" - Mysterious shop offering strange goods.
"A Story of Land and Sea" - continuation of "The Loot of Bombasharna" from _The Book of Wonder_.
"A Narrow Escape" - A magician in a dank cavern below Belgrave Square and his preparations to destroy London.
"The Watch-Tower" - When a tower is built to guard forever against the Saracens, forever may be longer than you think.
"How Plash-Goo Came to the Land of None's Desire"
"The Three Sailors' Gambit" - Sometimes even the Devil can't win at the game of selling souls. A chess story.
"The Exiles' Club" - How are the mighty fallen; and even the fallen have to go somewhere.
"The Three Infernal Jokes" - Not so much selling a soul, as trading away an option.

Highly recommended
By Michelle Caisse
This is exactly what I was looking for. This book gives instructions for making a wide variety of beautiful doors. It covers several types of doors, and gives a number of examples of each type. It illustrates each door with a photograph and a scale drawing. Step-by-step instructions are not always given, but there is enough detail that a non-expert can understand how to build the door. The instructions and illustrations are clear. There are some nice color photographs, too. It also covers door hardware and how to hang a door.

Great book, but here's a big heads up
By D. Bowman
If you want to get inspired, and learn the secrets of doormaking, this is a wonderful book. But here's either a warning or a tip, depending on how you care to look at things. This book is exactly the same, I mean exactly the same as John Birchard's "Doormaking Patterns & Ideas", which you can currently buy used for less than $1. How did I find this out? By unknowingly buying both books and discoverying, to my disappointment, that they are the same book, by the same publisher, with all the same text and pictures, but a different cover and title. Save yourself some money and buy the cheap one. Don't buy both!

Good book on Doors
By SoulCatcher
Finding a book about design and construction of doors is hard. Hunting around I found few books...and even fewer of those were even in print.

This book provides the basics of door design and construction. It's not a reference guide but it does provide a great deal of data on the different types of doors and how to build them. It's NOT a step-by-step guide or a book for dummies but it does provide a wealth of information.

Review
“Lively. . . . Tragedy's (and comedy's) alternation of speech and song provide the . . . fundamental rhythmic dynamic, and a good translator will use different registers to capture this alternation. Here, Taplin is very successful, and many passages in the odes convey both the intensity of the lyric mode and the contrast with the spoken rhythm that precedes and follows.” (Bryn Mawr Classical Review)

“Taplin’s eminently readable version of this harrowing tragedy justifies his reputation as one of our foremost experts in dramatic criticism, whose pioneering efforts in illuminating ancient stagecraft remain indispensable today.” (Froma Zeitlin, Princeton University)

“Euripides’s influential and provocative Medea continues to be read, performed, adapted, and reinterpreted in multiple contexts across the globe. Taplin’s accessible and performable, yet vivid and poetic translation makes the play available to a modern audience while doing justice to both its complexities and its horrific power.” (Helene P. Foley, Barnard College, Columbia University)

“Taplin translates Medea into clear and contemporary English while reflecting well the different registers and tones that create the subtle texture of Greek tragedy. His version is eminently speakable, but also highly faithful to the original Greek, making it ideal for instructors and readers who want to study closely the specific metaphors and terms that carry the classic themes of this influential drama.” (Donald J. Mastronarde, University of California, Berkeley)

“Taplin’s volume offers the raw bones of a brilliant production.” (Francesca Middleton Times Literary Supplement)

It does the job
By B. Lotfinia
Kwintner's edition, being part of the Bryn Mawr series, will get you through the Greek if you're approaching the text early in your career. Don't expect extensive information about the Medea myth or Attic tragedy or copious literary or cultural notes, since Kwintner focuses on morphology, vocabulary (she does seem fond, however, of pointing out the odd instance of chiasmus). Be aware that there are errors in the text: on at least two occasions there was a superfluous omega with iota-subscript instead of a space between two words. There were also parts in the commentary that my professor disputed, but make of that what you will. In terms of the book's physical construction, the spiral-binding is beyond irritating: I found it impossible to open and close with ease. The paper is also cheap, even by comparison to other entries in the BMC series: in terms of durability, it's somewhere between a newspaper and a photo-copy.

Considering the low price and target audience, these are forgivable faults, but skip this volume and proceed directly to Mastronarde's Cambridge edition if you don't need the linguistic hand-holding.

Find another edition if you can
By S.
Euripides' Medea is essential reading for any Greek student but Kwintner's edition doesn't really do it justice. There are a lot of bizarre typos in the Greek text -- and a beginning Greek student will have a hard enough time with a perfect text, let alone one that's been messed up by the editor. I bought this for a course and shortly afterward switched to the edition by Denys L. Page. Apparently the Cambridge edition is also very worthwhile.

Fine performance enriches Medea for listener
By A Customer
This fine production shows how hard Medea is to stage even in audio. The power is dissipated when Medea screeches her anger. Her quiet is stronger than her loud. Listening to this performance deepens our feeling for this great play.

Harrying: Skills of Offense in Shakespeare's Henriad, by Harry Berger Jr.

Harrying considers Richard III and the four plays of Shakespeare's Henriad--Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, and Henry V. Berger combines close reading with cultural analysis to show how the language characters speak always says more than the speakers mean to say.

Shakespeare's speakers try to say one thing. Their language says other things that often question the speakers' motives or intentions. Harrying explores the effect of this linguistic mischief on the representation of all the Henriad's major figures.

It centers attention on the portrayal of Falstaff and on the bad faith that darkens the language and performance of Harry, the Prince of Wales who becomes King Henry V.

Review

"Harrying will no doubt surprise and delight readers with the unrivaled close readings Berger is famous for, but what makes this book so resonant is that it works this critical practice across a series of interlocking plays, turning Shakespeare's histories into a powerful 'tetralogical echo chamber.' The effects are dazzling."--Nina Levine, University of South Carolina

"At the center of Berger's approach to the histories is his insistence on the continuities across plays that close attention to linguistic echoes reveals. Page by page, line by line, word by word, his detailed examination of the texts leads him, and us, to new insights and new understanding."--Peter Erickson, Northwestern University

"This non-linear structure derives from and supports Berger's express conviction that Shakespeare's plays do not, as commonly asserted, find their true meaning on stage. Rather, he suggests here, they are 'underdetermined' by their theatrical purpose"--Emma Smith, Times Literary Supplement

For Henriad Enthusiasts...
By Mark E. Alcamo
Professor Berger may be the most qualified Shakespeare scholar in the world on the Henriad plays (the second tetralogy) so this book should be read by anyone seriously interested in closely studying these plays. His long term interest in these plays clearly shines through in these thoughtful essays reflecting on them.

A revolutionary and much-acclaimed study of the work and motives of the Alice In Wonderland author

This is the most significant biographical work on the author of Alice In Wonderland to be published in recent years, and this new edition marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Karoline Leach’s study contends that Carroll was far from being emotionally—and sexually—obsessed with female children and his "muse" Alice Liddell. She tells the strange story of how the false image of Carroll came into being and how he adored—and was adored by—women of all ages and enjoyed adult relationships that woud have scandalized the Victorian age in which he lived. The author gained access to unpublished evidence from the family archive, as well as letters and diaries, that led her to uncover Carroll’s secret passion for another member of "Alice’s" family. In The Shadow of The Dreamchild is a radical re-evaluation of the life and work of one of England’s most mysterious literary figures, and the revised edition expands on Leach’s important research.

This new cover looks wonderful in comparison
By Phantomwise
I want to make something absolutely clear because I found I was mistaken. I thought this was a third revised edition, but it's a reprint of the second revised edition. There isn't new material (which was why I rated "predictable" but only because Amazon forced me to pick something...).

Regardless, I had always thought the covers for the past two editions were lacking, especially the last one. This new cover looks wonderful in comparison. It appears simple, though the font choices, the color, and the silhouette (which I believe is original though based off Tenniel) look great. I even like the feel of it better than the older paperback. My only complaint is I wish it were available in hardcover. I look forward to displaying it on my shelf.

As for the content: Karoline Leach's biography was the first in Carroll research to discard myths with no evidence and only consider primary documents as facts. She also traces exactly how those myths came about. She was also first to reveal that Carroll was very much a normal man (who was not shy, who wrote mature love poetry, and who knew his friendships with grown ladies were scandalous). She even addresses the mysterious "acrobatic dress" pictures he had taken of young women, which don't survive, but he mentioned in his diaries and letters.

The main and most important part of the book is the description of the Carroll Myth (how his biogaphy has been invented and manipulated). This part alone is worth the purchase. It will open your eyes and more importantly, give you framework to assess whether other Carroll information is accurate.

The most common complaint I hear is of the Mrs. Liddell part because to some people, it does not seem believable. If this is why you haven't read it yet, I highly suggest trying it out anyway for the Carroll Myth information. The parts on Mrs. Liddell are presented as a theory with evidence, not as a fact.

Journeys & Destinations: Proceedings of the 22nd Tolkien Society Seminar (Peter Roe Book 16)From The Tolkien Society

Journeys & Destinations is the collected papers from the twenty-second Tolkien Society Seminar held at the Sir John Soane’s Museum, London in June 2009. The Society’s seminars are an invaluable source of interesting, intelligent and sometimes unusual Tolkien scholarship, with the papers being followed by fruitful discussions.

This 54-page booklet edited by Ian Collier, with a cover photo provided by Julie Sinclair, brings together the papers given by the likes of our Archivist Dr Pat Reynolds, Sue Bridgwater, Anne Marie Gazzolo, Dr Antonio Sanna, and Mick Ennis and the children of the Ironville & Codnor School group.

The concept of ‘journey’ is taken in different ways by each paper and should provide readers with some interesting insights:

Anne Marie Gazzolo – 'I have something to do before the end': The Journey of Samwise the Stouthearted.

Dr Patricia Reynolds – Rings and other Things - Possession and the Possessed.

Mick Ennis & Ironville & Codnor Myth & Magic Tolkien Reading & Language Fellowship – Dragons, Dreams, Myth & Magic.

Sue Bridgwater – Stay or go; some reflections upon stasis and travelling in Tolkien's mythos.

Dr Antonio Sanna – Travelling over/into the Feminine Body and Mind: An Analysis of the Metaphorical Journey of the Fellowship in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

The Tolkien Society’s seminar proceedings – and other booklets such as the Sindarin Lexicon – are published under the auspices of the Peter Roe Memorial Fund, the Fund commemorates Peter Roe who died in 1979 aged 16 after being hit by a speeding lorry outside his home. He was on his way to buy envelopes to enclose his enthusiastic letter to the Society. Peter was clearly an incredibly talented young man, producing stories, artwork and maps; Peter’s Dwarfish Fragments were published in Mallorn 15 in September 1980. Proceeds from the sale of Peter Roe books go back into the Fund to ensure that it is self-perpetuating. The Society will continue to produce Peter Roe Books to honour his memory.

Jane Eyre (Inti Classics Annotated): by Charlotte Bronte, by Charlotte Brontë

Jane Eyre (originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë

The novel Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character. The novel is set somewhere in the north of England, during the reign of George III (1760–1820), and goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead Hall, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations and oppression; her time as governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family, during which her earnest but cold clergyman cousin, St. John Rivers, proposes to her; and the finale with her reunion with, and marriage to, her beloved Rochester. During these sections the novel provides perspectives on a number of important social issues and ideas, many of which are critical of the status quo. Literary critic Jerome Beaty opines that the close first person perspective leaves the reader "too uncritically accepting of her worldview", and often leads reading and conversation about the novel towards supporting Jane, regardless of how irregular her ideas or perspectives.

The only edition to buy
By Joseph Guyer
This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions
By Jordi Vilalta Lopez
Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...
By KayBee
You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

Still Looking for Karl Lagerfeld (LOL)

This is more than a coffee table book, it is a book of mini adventure as you try to find the elusive Kaiser amongst the sea of celebrities. As your eyes roam across the pages, you can be easily sidetracked by the other famous faces in this book. Once you start your search, it may be hard to put this book down. The writing is also worth the read. You will not be bored with this one!

Finding Karl is fun!
By Erika W.
I recently received a copy of Where's Karl?: A Fashion-Forward Parody by Stacey Caldwell and Ajiri A. Aki from Blogging for Books to review. All opinions are my own.

I grew up with Where's Waldo? books and always loved hunting for Waldo in the dizzying pictures. So when I saw Where's Karl? and that it is centered around Karl Lagerfeld and includes many other famous fashion and pop-culture faces, I knew I had to check it out.

The book's introduction is written by a fictional blogger (how appropriate?!) named Florence de la Sabine (aka Fleur). Fleur is pretty much obsessed with Karl and is going to travel around the world looking for him from Milan to Paris and so on.

Each place Fleur travels to is two pages of illustrations by Michelle Baron. There are so many recognizable faces within each illustration. Toward the back of the book, there is a checklist of people other than Karl to look for too.

This book was a big hit with everyone in my family, including my husband and son. We all enjoyed the friendly competition of finding Karl first. My mom picked it up while she was over for Thanksgiving and spent her entire breakfast looking for Karl.

If you're a fan of fashion or celebrities, this is a fun book to have. It would also make a great gift for a fashion loving friend!

A Yankee Ace in the RAF: The World War I Letters of Captain Bogart Rogers (Modern War Studies)From University Press of Kansas

The engines are started, twenty shiny propellers glistening in the sun, forty exhausts rumbling and belching blue smoke. . . . Everything ready, the pilot waves his hand, the blocks are pulled and the flights taxi out one at a time. Away goes the commander, motor roaring, streamers flying, and the rest follow in their proper formation order. A couple of turns around the aerodrome and they're away to the line-up, up, and they soon disappear in the haze.

Just beyond that beckoning "haze," Captain Bogart Rogers and his fellow pilots flew into enemy territory to fight the world's first air war. Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers's letters to his fiancee, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen's Flying Circus.

The son of controversial Los Angeles attorney Earl Rogers ("the greatest jury lawyer of his time," claimed Clarence Darrow) and brother to pioneering Hearst journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns, Bogart made his mark in the Great War. Of the three hundred-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became "aces" by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six "kills" in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, Cambrai, Ypres-Lys, and six other major engagements.

Rogers also had a definite flair for writing, one that launched his postwar career as a journalist and screenwriter in Hollywood. The letters in this volume are a striking testament to that skill. Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humor, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodromes, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride "Izzy" (who celebrates her 99th birthday in 1996).

Review
"Incontestably, Bogart Rogers had a way with words; his lively style is ideal for relating the adventures of a young man caught up in the world's first air war. Where many other airmen struggled to convey the wonders of early flight, Rogers provides a deft and vivid portrait of life in the cockpit."—Lee Kennett, author of The First Air War, 1914–1918

"Rogers was a sensitive and sensible observer who wrote well even at this early stage of his literary career. His letters chronicle his maturation in the terrible crucible of the air war."—David F. Trask, author of The AEF and Coalition Warmaking, 1917–1918

From the Author
In the summer of 1917 Bogart Rogers, a 20 year old sophomore at Stanford University and son of a prominent Los Angeles attorney joined the Royal Flying Corps, and trained in Canada, Texas, and England. Assigned to RAF No.32 Squadron, he arrived in France at the end of April, 1918. From the middle of May to the Armistice on November 11 Rogers fought in ten major battles on the Western Front and ended the war a Flight Leader and decorated Captain with six enemy planes to his credit. From the time he left for Canada in August 1917 until he returned home in May 1919 he wrote 244 letters to a Stanford girl, Isabelle Young, whom he married in 1920. The letters represent not only a chronicle of World War I, but also an 18 month courtship by mail. They are written with clarity and humor and the skill of a writer who, after the war, wrote for the Los Angeles Examiner, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, Popular Aviation and many other magazines . He was also a screen writer and movie producer for Paramount Pictures.

Although the book is published as Military History and covers the life of a young fighter pilot through training and aerial combat in "the terrible crucible of the air war" it also contains an element of romance and has appealed to at least a few women. One reader, Barbara Ivey wrote, "I so enjoyed becoming a part of the lives of these two sweethearts".

The original letters have been edited and the content reduced by a third, leaving out much of the trivia found in collections of letters such as comments on the weather and personal banter etc.. The book contains some, but not many footnotes. Each chapter is prefaced with a paragraph or two putting the events of the chapter in historical context.

An intimate look at the Air War
By Jesse Negron
Bogart Rogers gives us a uniquely personal perspective of the first air war. Unlike many other war diary books, this book is a collection of letters that Rogers wrote to his soon-to-be wife. The letters, in and of themselves, are very interesting. Obviously, Rogers had no idea they would be published one day, so they have a strikingly intimate and honest tone when compared to other war diaries of the time. Because the story unfolds organically, via this series of letters, there is a lot of reading between the lines. Especially when it comes to what he chooses not to tell his fiance'. His description of one of his close friends not returning after a sortie is written so succinctly and "business-like" that his pain and loss somehow seem more intense and palpable. In some ways, this book is a love story. Although every letter goes into detail about his air combat experiences, his greatest conflict is that he wants to be reunited with the love of his life. Above all, Rogers comes across as a real human being who could have lived now as well as then. The power of his letters comes from the fact that he describes the dangerous training, the chaotic dogfighting, the horrors of war to a woman who has little knowledge of what he is going through. This brings a freshness and vitality to his account of fighting in the air during the Great War.
