For example, a study performed by ABB reveals that increasing the power transfer capability of an existing transmission line from 1300 MW to 2000 MW using series compensation is 90% less expensive than building a new transmission line. However, a factor hindering the extensive use of series capacitive compensation is the potential risk of subsynchronous resonance (SSR). The SSR is a condition where the wind farm exchanges energy with the electric network, to which it is connected, at one or more natural frequencies of the electric or mechanical part of the combined system, comprising the wind farm and the network, and the frequency of the exchanged energy is below the fundamental frequency of the system. This oscillatory phenomenon may cause severe damage in the wind farm, if not prevented. Therefore, this book studies the SSR phenomenon in a capacitive series compensated wind farm. A DFIG-based wind farm, which is connected to a series compensated transmission line, is considered as a case study. The book consists of two main parts: Small-signal modeling of DFIG for SSR analysis: This part presents a step-by-step tutorial on modal analysis of a DFIG-based series compensated wind farm using Matlab/Simulink. The model of the system includes wind turbine aerodynamics, a 6th order induction generator, a 2nd order two-mass shaft system, a 4th order series compensated transmission line, a 4th order rotor-side converter (RSC) controller and a 4th order grid-side converter (GSC) controller, and a 1st order DC-link model. The relevant modes are identified using participation factor analysis. The Mechanician is essentially a book of processes, including all operations by which the principal portions of engines are forged, planed, lined, turned, and otherwise treated. The author endeavours to perform two things - to explain to uninitiated students how engines are really made, together with the fundamental principles involved in making them, and also to produce a book which shall be useful to practical mechanics for reference in the difficult details of their business.

Of the six chapters constituting the work, the first is devoted to forging; in which the fundamental principles to be observed in making forged articles of every class are stated, giving the proper relative positions for the constituent fibres of each article, the modes of selecting proper quantities of material, the steam-hammer operations, the shaping-moulds, and the manipulations resorted to for shaping the component masses to the intended forms.

Engineers' tools and their construction are next treated, because they must be used during all subsequent operations described in the remaining chapters; the author thinking that the student should first acquire a knowledge of the apparatus which he is supposed to be using in the course of the processes given in Chapters 4, 5, and 6. In the fourth chapter, planing and lining are treated, because these are the elements of machine-making in general. The processes described in this chapter, are those on which all accuracy of fitting and finishing depend. The next chapter, which treats of shaping and slotting, the author endeavours to render comprehensive by giving the hand-shaping processes in addition to the machine-shaping.

In many cases, hand-shaping is indispensable, such as, sudden breakage, operations abroad, and on board ship, also for constructors having a limited number of machines. Turning and screw-cutting occupy the last chapter. In this, the operations for lining, centring, turning, and screw-forming are detailed, and their principles elucidated.

The Mechanician is the result of the author's experience in engine-making during twenty years; and he has concluded that, however retentive the memory of a machinist might be, it would be convenient for him to have a book of primary principles and processes to which he could refer with confidence. It is hoped that the descriptions given of the author's lining-tables, pillar-tables, gap straight-edges, slottil, valin, monto, and other instruments, may cause them to be more generally used by engineers, the author having proved them highly efficient during many years.

The Tables of dimensions relating to sizes of iron for forging, cylindrical gauges, screw-taps, and hobs, are also exactly in accordance with his practice; also his method of shaping tap-screws, hob-screws, dies, bolt-screws, and selecting screwing-wheels.

And once again, the illustrations are missing.

Why the Amazon store keeps offering these crippled editions is beyond me. The illustrations that were obviously so important to the original edition are completely missing. Especially in a book on making and using tools the result is fatal. You can still glran some good stuff from the text, but your comprehension will be severely limited.

Glory Dust is an intriguing war story about two brothers fighting on opposite sides, being thrown in circumstances that brings them close again, searching for lost gold, and their goal to bring justice to their sister. I enjoyed it, especially some of the funny parts in the story.

Excellent Book

This was another very good book by this Author, I was very glad that I had bought this book, I have bought a number of other of this Authors books, and they have all been very good, you can't go wrong with the Kindle price.

Let us apply this key to the subject of art, and to the art of architecture in particular, and let us see if by so doing we may not learn more of art than we knew before, and more of theosophy, too.

The theosophic idea is that everything is an expression of the Self, - or whatever other name one may choose to give to that immanent unknown reality which forever hides behind all phenomenal life, - but because on the physical plane our only avenue of knowledge is sense perception, a more exact expression of the theosophic idea would be: Everything is the expression of the Self in terms of sense. Art, accordingly, is the expression of the Self in terms of sense. Now, though the Self is one, sense is not one, but manifold, and so there are arts, each addressed to some particular faculty or group of faculties, and each expressing some particular quality or group of qualities of the Self. The white light of Truth is thus broken up into a rainbow-tinted spectrum of Beauty, in which the various arts are colors, each distinct, yet merging one into another, - poetry into music; painting into decoration; decoration becoming sculpture; sculpture, architecture, and so on.

In such a spectrum of the arts each one occupies a definite place, and all together form a series of which music and architecture are the two extremes.

A wealth of awesome LOST content for new viewers and old!

I have the pleasure of being one of the 50 plus contributors to this compendium. But, that hasn’t caused too much bias in my feelings towards what the editors have accomplished. This is a very thorough collection of articles, blog posts and analysis from the era when LOST aired and changed the television landscape forever. It has been organized in a way that is compelling to read from cover to cover. But, this is a book that is only enhanced by its e-book features. There are handy interactive links in each chapter to read summaries of each post allowing you to choose which one you want to read. There are links back to those summary pages within each post. And in the recap section you can easily jump to the next episode without scrolling through miles of awesome content. Each article has a link back to the original internet source material (if it still exists) and an indicator to the wealth of comments attributed to each post.

There were many opinions on if LOST stuck the landing in the end. Whichever side of the fence you landed on, you will no doubt come out of this book with a more informed opinion of the show and what questions were or weren’t technically answered. There is an entire chapter featured on that polarizing series finale and tons of information for lovers and haters to chew on!

I’ve certainly found new binge watchers of LOST coming to my blog and thankful that there is a wealth of content so that they can at least feel somewhat like they were part of the 6 year world captivating LOST discussion. This truly is the "Ultimate Compendium" for any LOST fan!

Longtime residents of the "Island" and new recruits will find that this very large eBook is a great source of information and insight while navigating your way through LOST.

I really appreciate all that the contributing authors provided. And I especially find that the editors did a wonderful job of articulating and organizing not only every single episode of LOST, but also themes and other important and useful articles pertaining to this deep story.

This eBook has quickly become my number one source for LOST as I rewatch this awesome TV series again and again.

This is a great book and features my distillery which is the "Old Crow" distillery. There are a few inaccuracies in the text but overall great photos and interesting material. If you would like to come back to shoot more let me know.

The Anatomy of the Ship Series Is Dead! Long Live the Anatomy of the Ship Series!

"Anatomy of the Ship" has long been one of my favorite book series, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to learn that the first new "Anatomy" in ten years was in the works. This book was originally intended for publication in 2008, but something must have fallen by the wayside. I was awfully disappointed in the "Bismarck" and "Constitution" anatomies, and was hoping that this book might breathe some new life into the series.

How is it? I'd say "pretty good" on the whole. It's not as extraordinarily detailed as some of the better "Anatomies," but it's a step above many of the weaker ones. The inside of the front and back covers are put to good use, presenting fold-out interior and exterior profiles of the hull, and two very nice paintings by Geoff Hunt. The biggest formatting change is the consolidation of the Introduction and Photographs chapters, reducing the amount of cross-referencing required compared with the other anatomies. "The Tudor Warship Mary Rose" contains a great deal more photographs and period artworks of the ship than earlier anatomies, including a large number of photographs of artifacts recovered from the wreck. The quality of the drawings ranges from exceptional to decent. The section on hull construction is probably the most detailed, right down to exploded views of gunport construction, cross-sections of a summercastle knighthead, and structural plans of each deck. Throughout the book are other examples of close-up details, including the lacing of bonnets to the mainsails, the rigging of the masthead of the ship's boat, and three-view drawings of nine types of rigging blocks. The final chapter even includes a set of plans depicting the remains of the ship as currently seen on display in Portsmouth, England.

As exciting as it may be to finally have a brand new "Anatomy," some of the plans are rather bleak looking and lack drawing keys. The plans of the standing and running rigging are probably this book's low point, consisting entirely of three unlabeled 1/192 scale profile views of the ship. The drawings of the ship's guns are very nicely done, but again, not a single one is labeled. I know that any seasoned maritime enthusiast should be able to identify parts of a ship's guns and rigging without any hand-holding, but I can't figure out why so many plans in this book are either completely unlabeled, or rather sparsely so.

Although some of the omissions are rather frustrating, I'm happy to see one more book in this series. Doug McElvogue is the former Senior Research Fellow & Archaeologist of the Mary Rose Trust, so I'd imagine that these plans constitute an exceptionally accurate rendition of how the ship appeared in 1545. In fairness, I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars. As an "Anatomy," this is somewhat of a middle tier title. However, there's enough interesting supporting material here to bump up my rating from three to four stars.

A Welcome Re-start to the Series

I do love the Anatomy of the Ship series. This is the first I've gotten in Kindle format, and I'm reasonably happy with the display of the drawings. That being said, I do wish that there were more drawings and greater detail in this volume. I understand the difficulty in preparing material for the remains of a hull with little in the way of other documentation, but there was considerable material among the artifacts recovered that would have been of interest to the modeler. I did appreciate the detail provided, such as the drawing of the longbow. Overall, very nice while not among the very best that Conway has produced.
