About the Author
Damien Broderick is a writer whose works include the novel The Judas Mandala and critical studies Ferocious Minds and X, Y, Z, T: Dimensions of Science Fiction. He is a five-time recipient of the Australian SF Ditmar Award and a runner-up for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. He lives in San Antonio, Texas. Paul Di Filippo is a two-time Nebula Award finalist and a Philip K. Dick finalist. He is the author of Creature from the Black Lagoon, Ribofunk, The Steampunk Trilogy, and Top Ten: Beyond the Farthest Precinct and the editor of Freaks in a Box: The Myths of Media. He lives in Providence, Rhode Island. David Pringle is a writer and editor. He is the author of several guides, including Modern Fantasy: The Hundred Best Novels, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels, and The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction. VERY USEFUL

I've been sampling BEST 101 & am very pleased at the summaries indeed. It's an insightful way to consider the sprawl of great work over 25 years, a huge job!
I've read the majority and agree they should be in. (There's even one of mine, an unexpected bonus. They treated my galactic series well and caught the flavor of it.) Glad to see Anderson's GENESIS, his last great work -- writ for me in a month! -- when Zelazny died and I had a slot to fill in the collection, FAR FUTURES. Anderson was a titan.
Could've used an index, but still, immensely valuable. Thanks for this very useful book--must read some of these I missed!

A Great Overview of the past 25 years in SF

For the casual sf fan looking for a new read, or for someone like me who needs to stay abreast of the ever-sprawling world of sf, Broderick & Di Filippo have done us all a service. Concise, engaging and insightful, Science Fiction the 101 Best Novels: 1985-2010 provides an important survey of the work being done with the sf novel over the last quarter century. From seminal works like Atwood's The Handmaiden's Tale & Mieville's Perdito Street Station, onto less-discussed gems like Nagata's Vast & Jensen's My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time, Broderick & Di Filippo provide the reader with a generous offering of quality science fiction.

Will every reader agree with the selections laid out in this book? Did everyone agree with Rolling Stone's list of the 100 great rock n roll guitarists? Hell no. But that's the point. Books like 101 stir the debate and get people talking about favorite books unloved and not included, and this enthusiasm spills over and generates more conversation and ultimately more reading. Broderick & Di Filippo hipped me to at least 15 books that slipped under my radar, and their combined enthusiasm for books I have neglected like Shepard's Life During Wartime and Niffeneggar's The Time Traveler's Wife have made me reconsider both novels. And on the macro level, 101 offers the reader a solid overview of the themes, artistic movements and philosophical ideas that have guided sf from cyberpunk to singularity.

Science fiction has always been a dialogue between the past and the present. With Science Fiction the 101 Best Novels: 1985-2010, Broderick & Di Filippo keep the dialogue moving forward.

101 Bottles of SF on the Wall

This book has an unusually descriptive title. It contains 101 brief (2-5 page) reviews of the "best" 101 science fiction novels published in 1985 through 2010. It is a companion volume to David Pringle's Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels: 1949-1984. Both books guide readers through the relatively large universe of book-length science fiction. Authors Damien Broderick and Paul Di Filippo limit themselves to one entry per book author, using this entry to discuss multiple works by that author as appropriate.

The entries include reviews of five of my favorites. They provide a general sense of the way these books are reviewed and evaluated.

Ender's Game (1985) by Orson Scott Card. This novel about human cadets training to fight in an interstellar war launched Card's career. Its success is attributed to the inclusion of a dozen hot-button topics: "...an existential threat to the human race; the nature of alien intelligence and person-hood; genocide; means versus ends; the `great man' theory of history; the limits of government and the proper role of the citizen; the limits and nature of the educational system; the military ethos; the nature of sociopaths and power; family dynamics; sibling rivalry; and schoolboy rivalry."

Use of Weapons (1990) by Iain M. Banks. The review outlines the book's history of protagonist Cheradenine Zakalwe, a perpetual soldier for various armies and causes. It also overviews Banks' other novels set in the "Culture" universe and the primary themes emphasized in its post-scarcity society. There is an insightful discussion of the book's twin helix narrative structure. And there is an *unforgiveable* spoiler for one of the other Culture books.

A Fire Upon the Deep (1992) by Vernor Vinge. This story spans star systems across an entire sector of the galaxy and includes humans, an engagingly-strange collection of aliens, and strange, incomprehensible Powers with... strange, incomprehensible powers. The universe is partitioned into Zones which are concentric regions around the galaxy's center. The laws of physics differ in these Zones, with thought and spaceflight barely possible in the Unthinking Depths and artificial intelligence, faster-than light travel, and other wonders abundant in the Beyond. Bad things can happen when denizens of different Zones interact. The review discusses Vinge's the relationship between this work, its prequel A Deepness in the Sky, and the Singularity concept introduced in Marooned in Realtime.

Perdido Street Station (2000) by China Miéville. This book introduced readers to the author's Bas-Lag series and to its central city, the sprawling, overcrowded, mucusy metropolis of New Crobuzon. The book is named for its largest train station, only one of an incredible set of locations that includes an enclave of cactus-people and an embassy of Hell. The story is about a scientist who accidentally looses deadly slake-moths on the City. But the story is just an excuse to explore the people, places, and improbabilities of New Crobuzon. There is also some discussion of Miéville`s subsequent Bas-Lag books, The Scar and Iron Council.

The Time Traveler's Wife (2003) by Audrey Niffenegger. This book isn't really about time travel in the traditional sense, nor may it "really" be considered science fiction. But it is close to both. Clair and Henry are friends, lovers, spouses, parents who have a life together, but many parts of it are out of sequence. Henry is an involuntary time traveler who jumps to different points in the past and future without will or warning. He knows Clair as a little girl, a teenager, a woman. And she waits for him, never knowing how old he will be when he appears. We see the implications across the span of their lives, if span is the right word. The review gives us a bit more of the author's perspective on her unique book.

The reviews of books I am familiar with describe their characters and plots accurately and are reasonably free of spoilers--with a few exceptions. Reviews of books I have not read have convinced me to pick up some overlooked gems, including Cyteen, The Diamond Age, and The Handmaid's Tale. I recommend this book as a reference and reading guide to recent, higher-quality science fiction.

Excerpt from Elementary Sloyd and Whittling: With Drawings and Working Directions

Sloyd is tool work so arranged and employed as to stimulate and promote vigorous, intelligent self-activity for a purpose which the worker recognizes as good. By "Elementary Sloyd" is meant bench work in wood, in two dimensions adapted to children from eight to twelve years of age. In 1889 I published a series of working drawings for Preliminary Sloyd with a teachers "Sloyd Manual of Working Directions." The changes and improvements made since that time are the results gained from the experience of many teachers, and are embodied in the course here outlined.

It is thought by some that children under twelve years of age have not the requisite strength and maturity to handle ordinary wood-working tools, but, owing to the recognized necessity of providing for the vigorous muscular activity of younger children, this course is suggested.

I have endeavored to select larger objects than those commonly given children at this age, so that they may obtain more physical exercise, and, although a good finish should be insisted upon, less accuracy is required. The objects are chosen with special reference to the interests of a. child at this age, and are different from those which have been suggested for the three upper grammar grades. This course may include toys and games which appeal to young children.

Many of the objects in this course have been evolved after a careful study of a large variety of children's original work in wood.

A great start - hoping for OCR updates

This book was obviously scanned in and run through OCR software. There are many scanning mistakes. But here is where I am hopping that Amazon can improve this book and send out updates.

The drawings are untouched from the original and therefore, full of detail. I hope they don't touch them

I am excited that Amazon would have such a classic woodworking book available in electronic form. But I look forward to when you don't have to decode the OCR mistakes

I was disappointed

The information in this book was quite interesting -- when the OCR software could get the text right. the illustrations were not all there nor were they in the correct order. I was disappointed in the Kindle version of this book.

great summary of Kacheloefen, if only all the text were there

In all fairness, I have not tried to work this issue out with Amazon yet, but I ordered the kindle version of this book and for some reason, the last word and a half of each line is cut off. I tried to adjust view settings, margins, font sizes on my reader, but nothing worked. From the information that is legible, however, the book is a valuable summary of the history, function and materiality of kacheloefen, a subject on which information is otherwise difficult to find. Accompanying diagrams are a bit underwhelming, but they convey the information successfully nonetheless.

I recommend buying an actual copy as opposed to the kindle version, which I would have done, but I have a presentation due on the material next week, and the lead time is several weeks for a paper version.

While reading this Western novel, I frequently told myself this writer is Louis L'Amour writing for a more modern, more mature audience. Not the mature audience of Elmore Leonard, true, but still a mature audience.

Insofar as typos and grammatical issues are concerned, this is well-edited and well-written.

For awhile there, I was wandering the arid country of San Diego, near my former home in El Cajon. This is an easy, fun read.

The only moderately negative point I have, as can be seen by the below excerpt, is the failure to start each chapter on a new page. Yes, I know, for many this is a very minor point, but, the fact that I bring it up should demonstrate just how solid this story actually is. Incidentally, our hero is actually solving two crimes simultaneously.

The excerpt:

This was the time! Maybe this was the time when she had overcome the voice and put it away so it would never bother her again. Arthur had at last been avenged, and her own terror and anger and pain had been avenged, wiped out and paid for with lawman blood. Yes. She sat on the bed, knowing that now her life would change, she could settle down and do whatever she wanted. Maybe go to San Francisco and work for a while, then pick out the most eligible bachelor in town and marry him. She could do it. She could tease him and make him want her so much that he would do anything to see her naked. He would have to marry her and he would. Now all she had to do was figure out the right man. Not Chance Thorne. He had no money. He had lied to her. She wasn’t sure just what she would do to Chance Thorne to even up the score. She did not tolerate men who lied to her. Just what would be his punishment would come to her. Now, she smiled as she tried to decide if she should slip into his room down the hall and wait for him to come back. It would be a fine joke on him, a surprise, a naked surprise. She would decide soon. Chapter Nine The play had been a melodrama, with a villain to hiss at, a pretty girl to cheer for, a hero to hope for and even the semblance of a story line. He laughed and cheered and hissed

It should be noted also that even though this character is a series of books, this book is a stand alone novel. Further, this must become either an audio book, or a radio play at audible, for it is a powerful, entertaining, first class western.

When I started this book, I thought it was a western. However, it was a very interesting story. The story is about a young couple who marry and somehow fall into the hands of the law. They have a terrible life warping experience. If you like mysteries, you will like this book.

This book prints the most important primary sources about the Roman army and its activities--inscriptions, papyri, excerpts from Vegetius--with helpful commentary and context. Fascinating in its concrete detail, this is the perfect antidote to the overly schematized generalizations about the army that one finds in more popular accounts.

An excellent way to supplement the standard book on the Roman army by Wilkes, Campbell's reference book makes available at reasonable costs some primary information about the army. The Umbrella book for Environmental Physics

This is a fairly new book, and I'm sure there will be complaints about this or that. For instance Smith just touches on the physics equations that govern the processes she explains. But I don't look at this book as a end-source, but essentially as a large "table of contents" for the field of environmental physics.

Smith covers each area, energy, pollution, climatology, and others with an introduction, and then she links each area to fundamental constraints. When I find an area that interests me further, then I head to Jackson, or Pathria, or whatever to get the greater detail.

But what is most important about this book is that Smith maintains her role as a scientist. She doesn't editorialize environmental issues, she simply presents the facts. And she has a depth of knowledge that astounds me. For instance she knew to cover restrictive fluid dynamics in ocean transport ... this is a critical area for cargo ships, yet generally not known to anyone but marine architects.

Smith brings the key component of environmental physics to the table in the opening pages. She astutely points out that physics is the most 'reductionist' of the sciences, where physicists reduce systems to the simplest components for analysis. Unfortunately, this approach can only be half useful for environmental systems, where the whole needs to always be kept in view. This book brings the whole into view.

When the physicists need the details they can then move into the huge structure of conventional physics literature.

For anyone who considers themselves an environmentalist, or an earth physicist, this book is important to read. I found my copy in the library, but I'm probably going to buy a copy to put in my personal reference library because I hope to work in this area when I'm done with my research work.

I am teaching a high school level course called "Introduction to Environmental Physics" and this is the best text available for this class - while it is not detailed enough for a college course, it covers enough subjects well for an introductory course!

Useless even as a historical curiosity

It's pretty obvious that a book from 1915 will not be an up to date text on aerodynamics, but this book fails even in being a useful view of the art and science of the time.

This was written by a mechanical engineer who had several other guides for boys published. He apparently knew absolutely nothing about aerodynamics and didn't seem to care to learn.

It seem that his main thesis is that all others working in the field missed the fact that orbital mechanics are a major factor in holding an airplane up. He states that at a speed of 100 mph 'motion which is nearly sufficient to maintain it in horizontal flight, independently of any plane surface'. Well in reality, the speed required would be more like 18,000 mph.

He dismisses the fact that concave bottom surfaces of the wing produce lift with 'Certain kinds of beetles, and particularly the common house
fly, disprove that theory, as their wings are perfectly flat'.

It would seem that someone tasked with providing an introduction to aerodynamics and aviation for children would have done better to try to summarize the current thinking on the matter, rather than advance his own crackpot hypotheses.

To realize that a publisher, even then, would sell this to technically minded children, is a frightening thought.

This book, in Middle English, is an excellent introduction to both the real and imagined life of King Richard the Lion Hearted. He is, interestingly enough, a direct ancestor of my wife, along with all of the Plantagenet Dynasty of kings. The prose is well written, and there are copious notes and a glossary. If you are into Middle English texts and literature, this book should be in your library.
