About the Author
Born Pearl Zane Gray in Zanesville, OH, Zane Grey is noted for his careful research and accurate portrayal of the American West. Though Grey trained as a dentist, he turned to writing as a career in 1904, when his first book was published. Grey went on to write more than 50 novels, most of them tales of adventure with a Western setting, including The Last of the Plainsmen (1908), Riders of the Purple Sage (1912), The Thundering Herd (1925), Code of the West (1934), and West of the Pecos (1937). His nonfiction works include Tales of Fishing (1925). Many of Grey s novels continue to be extremely popular, and several have been adapted into motion pictures.

Not A Western
By Charles Wheeler
On the dust cover of the first printing of this book in 1922 it had these words in bold letters, NOT A WESTERN, as if to warn the potential buyer what they would be getting was not the usual Zane Grey fare, and most likely contributed to the low sales of the book. Harpers had no faith in this book, nor did ZG's wife, Dolly, who had urged him not to write it. But this was a book he HAD to write. He felt enormous sympathy for the returning soldier from WW1 and how they were treated medically and emotionally, especially those who returned from the battle field after the first rush of excitement and jubilation the first one's received. Those later returnees were offered no parades, no notice at all, becoming almost victims of the war. Added to this was Zane Grey's hatred of the way society was changing, particularly the morals and the general conduct he saw being displayed by the young women of the day--"The Roaring Twenties" we call it today. This is his protest against that age or time as seen through the eyes of a returning veteran, who does not have long to live. And yes, a lot of what he was protesting against, is still with us today. We never seem to learn as a society; history repeats itself. This book may seem dated, the use of language and its descriptive qualities have changed somewhat, but all in all this book does a good job in depicting what was happening in the country following WW1. The Day of the Beast will never be one of ZG's big sellers, and for years the ending left me wondering if he actually wrote the book this way; but I have come to know more about him as a person through my study of him as a writer and can now see what he was trying to say with this book. If you read this book for what it was intended, then you will not be disappointed. It is NOT A WESTERN, but a very readable and enjoyable book exposing what the author believed was grievous to society then, and by the way even today.

soldier returns to u.s., finds major changes
By A Customer
Zane Grey's personal disgust with the "modern woman" drinking and smoking after the war is reflected in the disillusionment of a returned war veteran. After fighting to protect the U.S. homes and females, he finds values radically changed. Gives a good look at the sudden culture changes.

A different kind of Zane Grey
By loves books
Nothing is new under the sun. This could be true now, To think this was written about 1920 is amazing it just goes to show how people haven't changed. The story is about a young man who returns from WW1 after being in battle for 3 years many battle scars and emotional wounds. Coming home was a dream that turned into a nightmare. It was written in ZG great style but it is not a western, but I really enjoyed it.

Narrow Guage Railroads in Amercia by Howard Fleming
By Peter F. Lesses
This was probably the earliest book put together on the subject of narrow guage railways in America and Canada. It was copywritten in 1876 when the country was in economic depression during the Grant administration. This might account for the construction of so many narrow guage lines in order to save expenses. The book is well written and surprisingly complete given its early date. There is an extensive list of all the known lines in America and Canada.
On P. 24 is a complex mathematical diagram explaning the degrees of curvature in railroad tracks. Included is a valuable chart of the all the Narrow Guage Railways in Operation by state that show the Projected Milage, the Years of Construction and number of Miles Completed. The Denver & Rio Grande was the longest line of its kind in the country with 210 miles in operation.
Three feet was the standard for narrow guage in this country.
Other chapters are on locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars and Reports of Roads. At the end is a chapter on Canadian lines. The only criticism I have is that the book is digitally reprinted, which isn't so desirable for one trying to put together a good library.

Must have book on Narrow Gauge Railroads written 1890 !
By Craig Dokken
This is a great book written in 1890 on Narrow Gauge Railroads in America and Europe. It has all kinds of stats on railroads and their loco and car rosters. Has old ads from the companies dealing with the many railroads. Has measurements of different cars and loco's and figures.
I like all the information and I am glad I added this book to my library on Narrow Gauge railroads.

About the Author
Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) did more than any other American to impress upon late nineteenth- and twentieth century thought the idea that science and religion are enemies locked in combat on an almost military scale. In 1849, he entered Geneva College and later enrolled in Yale. After graduating, White joined the University of Michigan as a lecturer in history. He returned to New York and won election to the state senate. Finally, White went on to become the first president and cofounder of Cornell University. He also is the author of books, including Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason and a 1906 autobiography.

Be Thrifty and Buy This Book.
By Pacific NW Reader
I came across this book (an original copy) in a used bookstore years ago. It is one of the best purchases I ever made. The sound advice, and the wonderful stories illustrating the value of thrift are so helpful, and I return to them again and again. The consumerist, material world that we live in makes it difficult to keep living a thrifty lifestyle. It seems that we are constantly swimming upstream in our efforts to live below our means in a society that does not value frugality, thrift, saving, or denying ourselves in any way. This book is a wise antidote to all the salespeople, the marketers, the advertising literally everywhere trying to entice you to spend your money rather than save it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in saving money, getting out of debt, and becoming a finer person.

Originally Published in 1875, But Reads Like Today
By James East
Though by Samuel Smiles published this book in 1875, much to my surprise it read very contemporary. Reading this book reminds me of Mark Twain in that 'History does not repeat, but it sure rhymes.' The struggles that folks had in England in the 1840s to 1870s sure ring true of human struggles of today. Other surprising takeaways is the author quotes like Benjamin Franklin and David Hume as acquaintances.

Of course the thrust of the book is to abstain from debt like the plague, but it is more than that - it is a treatise on a way of life to avoid potentially struggles. Many folded ears on the pages of quotes, but a few as follows will give you a taste: "The secret of all success is to know how to deny yourself", "Disorderly persons are rarely rich; and orderly persons are rarely poor", "Give a man money without working for it, and he will soon claim it as a right." One can not have a book on thrift without tossing in a Cicero quote, "In the family, as in the State, the best source of wealth is Economy."

I own an original 1875 copy, but would recommend this book for the larger type. It is also available on Kindle which I also own and is very good.

The Duchesses: The Story of Britain's Ultimate Steam Locomotives, by Andrew Roden

The Duchesses tells the story of the ‘Princess Coronation’ class of locomotives -the streamlined embodiments of raw, bulked-up muscle and formidable power that any enthusiast will tell you were the finest steam engines in Britain.

Conceived of by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to rival the LNER’s illustrious ‘A4 Pacifics’, these trains heralded in the last golden age of steam. Designed by the great William Stanier, theirs is a story of grand beginnings, a slow trajectory of decline and a recent, celebrated rebirth. Today, there are two ‘Duchesses’ still in existence: Duchess of Hamilton and Duchess of Sutherland are now restored to their original streamlined appearance.

As The Duchesses’ beautiful cover illustration suggests, these Coronation locomotives were beautiful to behold; truly majestic feats of engineering. Andrew Roden’s book tells the story of their time in British Railways service; the class’ decommissioning in the 1960s; the extraordinary saga of two trains’ unlikely preservation by Billy Butlin at his holiday camps; and their eventual return to steam on the main line.

The Duchesses completes a trilogy of railway books from Aurum, joining Mallard - the story of the world’s fastest steam locomotive - and Flying Scotsman –that of the world’s most famous.

Mostly about the preservation era
By Peter Durward Harris
Although this book covers the background and history, I was initially surprised at how early in the book we reached the end of the Duchesses in commercial service. On reflection, perhaps this is less surprising when we consider that the end of their BR days came in 1964, when the author was still a child.

The book's main focus is therefore on the two preserved locomotives that have at various times been restored to active service for use hauling tourist and royal trains. Yes, the Duchess of Sutherland ,has been used to haul a royal train.

There is also a third preserved Duchess that is housed in a Birmingham museum. It is not forgotten, but there is a limit to what even a fanatical author can say about a museum exhibit.

Although not quite what I expected, this is a very informative book that is worth reading if you are interested in British steam locomotives.

On English Poetry: Being an Irregular Approach to the Psychology of This Art, From Evidence Mainly Subjective (Classic Reprint), by Robert

Excerpt from On English Poetry: Being an Irregular Approach to the Psychology of This Art, From Evidence Mainly Subjective

The greater part of this book will appear controversial, but any critic who expects me to argue on what I have written, is begged kindly to excuse me; my garrison is withdrawn without a shot fired and his artillery may blow the fortress to pieces at leisure. These notebook reflections are only offered as being based on the rules which regulate my own work at the moment, for many of which I claim no universal application and have promised no lasting regard. They have been suggested from time to time mostly by particular problems in the writing of my last two volumes of poetry. Hesitating to formulate at present a comprehensive water-tight philosophy of poetry, I have dispensed with a continuous argument, and so the sections either stand independently or are intended to get their force by suggestive neighbourliness rather than by logical catenation. The names of the glass houses in which my name as an authority on poetry lodges at present, are to be found on a back page.

It is a heartbreaking task to reconcile literary and scientific interests in the same book.

Delightful
By meadowreader
A very British book, with all the quirky charm that can entail. Graves was of course an important man of letters in his time, author of "I, Claudius" among much else. He was also a very good poet, and this book contains his thoughts, advice, prejudices, and ruminations about poetry and, especially, the writing of poetry. Here's a sample:

"I have often heard it said that a poet in intervals between inspirations should keep his hand in by writing verse-exercises, but that he should on on such occasions immediately destroy what he has written. That seems all wrong, it is an insult to the spontaneity of true poetry to go through a ritual farce of this sort and the poet will only be blunting his tools. He ought not to feel distressed at the passage of time as if it represented so many masterpieces unwritten. If he keeps mentally alive and has patience, the real stuff may arrive any moment; when it doesn't, it isn't his fault, but the harder he tries to force it, the longer it will be delayed."

Or this "Epitaph of an Unfortunate Artist," aimed at the would-be poet:

He found a formula for drawing comic rabbits:
This formula for drawing comic rabbits paid.
So in the end he could not change the tragic habits
This formula for drawing comic rabbits made.

Or:

When in Doubt
Cut it Out.

Recommended, especially for anyone trying their hand at writing poetry. Full of tips, cautions, and plain good advice, all transmitted unpretentiously, with grace and humor.

A Woman Writing, by Mary Lou Sanelli

Literary Nonfiction. Memoir. Women's Studies. In these wonderfully wise writings, Mary Lou Sanelli once again relies on her literary voice and candid sense of humor to explore all the realities true to anyone who has thought of making writing a part of her or his life. In a conversational style that entirely reflects her nature, she relates the comedy and the heartbreak of the writing life: how little it has to do with literary circles and clout and how much it has to do with limitless uncertainty, publishing anxiety, finding a way to make the process of writing, of life, one's joy, rather than relying on any outcome and the importance of viewing each let- down along the way as a triumph. Most compelling is how these writings, chronologically collected, grow and twine on the page right in front of the reader, allowing us to relish each piece like a long conversation with a trusted friend.

Long before activists raised concerns about the dangers of commercials airing during Saturday morning cartoons, America's young people emerged as a group that businesses should target with goods for sale. As print culture grew rapidly in the nineteenth century, enterprising publishers raced to meet the widespread demand for magazines aimed at middle- and upper-class children, especially those whose families had leisure time and cultural aspirations to gentility. Advertisers realized that these children represented a growing market for more than magazines, and the editors chose stories to help model good consumer behavior for this important new demographic.

In this deeply researched and engaging book, Paul B. Ringel combines an analysis of the stories in nineteenth-century American children's magazines with the backstories of their authors, editors, and publishers to explain how this hugely successful industry trained generations of American children to become genteel consumers. Ringel demonstrates how these publications, which were read in hundreds of thousands of homes, played to two conflicting impulses within American families: to shield children from commercial influences by offering earnest and moral entertainment and to help children learn how to prosper in an increasingly market-driven society.

Review
"This book is thoroughly researched, demonstrates an excellent understanding of magazine literature and culture, and provides biographical background and social history as contexts for the literature under examination."―Carol J. Singley, author of Adopting America: Childhood, Kinship, and Narrative Identity in Literature

"Ringel's nuanced interpretations are alive to the contradictions inherent to the precarious cultural balancing acts of juvenile publishing, and this book presents these findings in a clear and engaging style. This is the sort of solid scholarship that truly adds to our knowledge, and I predict that this book will last as a standard resource for many years."―Karen J. Sanchez-Eppler, author of Dependent States: The Child's Part in Nineteenth-Century American Culture

The Voyage of the Beagle: The Illustrated Edition of Charles Darwin's Travel Memoir and Field Journal, by Charles Darwin

Enjoy the best-selling memoir of Charles Darwin's journey of discovery aboard the HMS Beagle--now fully illustrated for the first time.

The Voyage of the Beagle is Darwin's fascinating account of his groundbreaking sea voyage that led to his writing On the Origin of Species.

When the HMS Beagle sailed out of Devonport on December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin was only twenty-two and setting off on the voyage of a lifetime. His journal reveals him to be a naturalist making patient observations concerning geology and natural history as well as people, places, and events. He witnessed and visited volcanoes in the Galapagos, saw the Gossamer spider of Patagonia, sailed through the Australasian coral reefs, and recorded the brilliance of the firefly--these recollections are found in these extraordinary writings. The insights made on the five-year voyage set in motion the intellectual currents that led to the most controversial book of the Victorian age: On the Origin of Species. An introduction on the background to Darwin's work, as well as notes, maps, appendices, and an essay on scientific geology and the Bible by Robert FitzRoy, Darwin's friend and captain of the Beagle, provide context for this incredible story.

This volume is the first fully illustrated edition of Darwin's journal and includes excerpts of On the Origin of Species so the reader can connect the author's journey with his discovery that made him famous.

Um, illustrate it with tons of historic prints from the original edition of Voyage, as well as historic photography from the mid-19th century, as well as modern photography. This book is beautifully illustrated.

Frankenstein, by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Mary Shelly’s Gothic romance, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus”, is often considered to be one of the earliest examples of the science fiction novel. Shelly had travelled throughout Europe and, when visiting in Germany, she became fascinated with the local story of an alchemist who had lived two centuries before in Frankenstein Castle. Her curiosity led her to dream about a scientist who experimented in creating life, which eventually led her to write the novel that would establish her fame. The first edition was published anonymously in 1818 in London, though Shelley's name appears on the second edition, which was published in France in 1823. Despite some initial unfavorable critical reviews, it became an immediate popular success.

Amazon.com Review
Frankenstein, loved by many decades of readers and praised by such eminent literary critics as Harold Bloom, seems hardly to need a recommendation. If you haven't read it recently, though, you may not remember the sweeping force of the prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multilayered doppelgänger themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. As fantasy writer Jane Yolen writes of this (the reviewer's favorite) edition, "The strong black and whites of the main text [illustrations] are dark and brooding, with unremitting shadows and stark contrasts. But the central conversation with the monster--who owes nothing to the overused movie image … but is rather the novel's charnel-house composite--is where [Barry] Moser's illustrations show their greatest power ... The viewer can all but smell the powerful stench of the monster's breath as its words spill out across the page. Strong book-making for one of the world's strongest and most remarkable books." Includes an illuminating afterword by Joyce Carol Oates.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Full-color drawings, photographs, and reproductions with extended captions have been added to the unedited text of Shelley's novel, thus placing the work in the context of the era in which it was written. The artwork faithfully represents the text and makes this edition appealing to reluctant readers. Unfortunately, many of the captions provide tangential information that, although interesting, interrupts the flow of the story. However, readers will quickly learn that it is not necessary to read every caption and appreciate this volume for its many quality illustrations.

From Booklist
Gr. 8^-12. Part of the Whole Story series, this is the full text of Mary Shelley's classic gothic story, which was first published in 1818 and has been a wild success ever since. Philippe Munch's illustrations have none of the power of Barry Moser's unforgettable woodcuts that evoke the loneliness of the grotesque outsider (in the Pennyroyal edition published by the University of California Press in 1984). The design here is crowded, and the type is small. However, the many period prints and maps in color and in black and white, with long, detailed captions, do provide the historical setting for the story, its geography, customs, and ideas. Teens enthralled by pop versions of the myth as well as science fiction fans will be interested in going back to the full version of what has been called the first science fiction novel and learning about the circumstances under which it was written by a woman, just 18 years old, 170 years ago. Choose the 1818 version
By Jim Dollar
Most editions of Mary Shelley's landmark book available today follow the heavily revised 1831 version. The impulse behind this trend is an honorable one (to present what is seemingly an author's "final revision"),but the 1818 version is preferable for many reasons. Looking back on her creation in later life, Shelley felt obliged to alter the book's focus in significant ways, adding what critic Marilyn Butler accurately describes as "long passages in which her main narrator, [Victor] Frankenstein, expresses religious remorse for making a creature..." The author sought to make the 1831 edition less controversial and thereby more palatable to the tastes of the reading public. The 1818 version is closer to Mary Shelley's original intentions, though it too, unfortunately, was filtered through the sensibilities of her husband, the poet Percy Shelley, who took many of his wife's rather straightforward passages and rendered them into his own more ornate and Ciceronian style. Still, the 1818 version remains more vital, more original, and less constrained by what the author believed would be acceptable to readers in 1830s England.

A moving, disturbing, depressing, but also touching tale
By Ian Fowler
Much like Bram Stoker's "Dracula", Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is a story we all think we know, but really don't. Very few films have consciously attempted to follow the novel too closely (which shouldn't detract from the excellent James Whale/Boris Karloff film, or its masterpiece-sequel, "The Bride of Frankenstein). Thus, everything popular culture "knows" about "Frankenstein" does not originate from literature, but from films. This is a shame, in a way, because the novel itself is, if not the progenitor, an early vessel of so many archetypes found science fiction and horror.

The basic plot remained intact when transferred to other media. Swiss medical student Victor Frankenstein discovers the secret of life (which he never reveals, lest someone repeat the mistake). He then puts together a body, essentially a man, from various corpses. He then becomes horrified by the creature he has built, and abandons. The creature, suffering a great deal of neglect and abuse, still manages to get a thorough education, and learns of his lineage. After murdering Victor's younger brother, and framing the family maid, the creature tells his (admittedly) sad tale to his "father", and then demands a mate. Victor, in a panic, agrees, then thinks better of it at the last moment, destroying the new bride. In retaliation, the creature murders all of Victor's loved ones (including his wife), and leads Victor on a merry chase across the world.

Most probably know that Mary Shelley wrote this book in response to a challenge issued by Lord Byron, during a vacation at Lake Geneva. (Along with this story came John Polidori's "The Vampyre", the first English vampire novel.) Most probably also know that Shelley went on to write other works of imaginative gothic fiction. Still, her modern reputation rests with this book.

As stated, numerous archetypes (themes, plot lines, characters) are present here. The basic fear of what evil technology may bring along with the good is a central theme, as is the warning against playing God. So is the implicit admonition to be responsible in all things, be it during innovation or being a parent. The creature is, for all intents and purposes, an android-everyone from Gort to C-3PO owe their existence to the Frankenstein monster. And the monster that slays all but one protagonist is a staple of horror, be it traditional monster movies, like "Alien", or more realistic slasher movies like "Halloween".

But, as I noted at the beginning of this review, certain of these elements have been lost in most interpretations. The creature is actually intelligent, and well-spoken, quite different from the inarticulate grunts or slow, half-sentences of the movies. Further, while the films have made lightening a staple of the creatures creation, Shelley never really explains the process. Finally, one of the staples of the films is the explanation for the creatures "evil" nature. Often, the problem lies with the brain used, which almost invariably is a criminal brain, or is damaged before implantation. In the book, the creature is really a child that's horribly neglected, but with the strength and intelligence to strike back: id without superego, and without restraints.

Thus, "Frankenstein" will be a new experience for readers who know the source exclusively from the films. Unlike "Dracula", there aren't any moments where a reader might look up and suddenly realize how quiet it is in the house, or how dark it's gotten outside. In that regard, "Frankenstein" has not aged particularly well. Throughout, however, it is a moving, disturbing, depressing, but also a touching and beautiful tale. Those qualities have withstood the test of time. While it is not always a rollicking adventure, it is a rewarding read.

Kindle edition is the 1831 edition, not 1818
By MsE0
I got the free Kindle edition from the link on the page for the Norton Critical Edition of the 1818 text. Mary Shelley made many significant edits to the book for the 1831 edition. I assumed it was the same edition because the link was from the same page. I didn't realize it was different until I went to write my assigned essay and went online to search for page numbers for the passages I wanted to quote. Many of the quotes I wanted to use don't even appear in the original version. This is a very important distinction, and I wish it had been labeled correctly so I would not have had to waste so much time looking for online versions of the correct text in order to replace the quotes I could not use from the later version. This edition is fine if you just want to read the book, but if you're reading it for school, you have more than likely been assigned the 1818 version, which is very different. The Kindle edition is also lacking in any kind of Kindle formatting, making it a hassle to find locations in the book.

Body My House: May Swenson's Work and LifeFrom Utah State University Press

The first collection of critical essays on May Swenson and her literary universe, Body My House initiates an academic conversation about an unquestionably major poet of the middle and late twentienth century. Between the 1950s and the 1980s, May Swenson produced eleven volumes of poetry, received many major awards, was elected chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, and was acclaimed by writers in virtually every school of American poetry.

Essays here address the breadth of Swenson's literary corpus and offer varied scholarly approaches to it. They reference Swenson manuscripts---poems, letters, diaries, and other prose---some of which have not been widely available before. Chapters focus on Swenson's work as a nature writer; the literary and social contexts of her writing; her national and international acclaim; her work as a translator; associations with other poets and writers (Bishop, Moore, and others); her creative process; and her profound explorations of gender and sexuality. The first full volume of scholarship on May Swenson, Body My House suggest an ambitious agenda for further work.

Review

"A marvelous collection about a major national poet with a large and devoted audience. . . . Just looking at the table of contents makes one's heart leap."
—Steven Gould Axelrod, coeditor of The New Anthology of American Poetry: Modernisms 1900-1950

"The collection provides a much-needed view of both Swenson's unique voice and achievement and her place within the tradition of poetry. Scholarly without being obscure, it is accessible to the lay reader. As such, it should appeal to multiple audiences: librarians, professors, students of poetry, and long established Swenson fans, of whom there are many outside the academy."
—Gardner McFall, editor of Made with Words by May Swenson

Nice Opening Onto May Swenson, Her Life and Work
By Doug - Haydn Fan
For reasons that defy both logic and instinct the poetry of May Swenson continues to fly under the mainstream publishing radar. This compilation of essays on Swenson, published by Utah State University Press, is the first major book we have on the poet, and is obviously only a jumping-off point. A variety of points of view are given and anyone interested in Swenson's poetry will find fascinating windows on her many-sided genius. Of particular note is Swenson's correspondence with Bishop, eeirly similar to and echoing Bishop's previous correspondence with Marianne Moore. Swenson is shown to be one of the most acute readers of Bishop - sometimes almost too acute in her understanding of the many poetic dodges and balancing acts her older friend maintained in achieving an aesthetic response to Swenson's essentially Dionysic questioning.
Reading through each essay reveals Swenson's profound intellect, one that used an ongoing and unceasing internal discourse to create her own poetic vision, a vision imbued with complexly positive felicites, delighting the senses, even as darker thoughts jangle the mind.
Any first work on so fine a poet as Swenson is welcome; this work, with its variety of essays is especially true to its goal - a rereading and initial introduction to one of America's great poets. As the authors correctly put it, "Her work is ripe for further discovery."
