In eighteenth-century France, censors, authors, and booksellers collaborated in making literature by navigating the intricate culture of royal privilege. Even as the king's censors outlawed works by Voltaire, Rousseau, and other celebrated Enlightenment writers, the head censor himself incubated Diderot’s great Encyclopedie by hiding the banned project’s papers in his Paris townhouse. Relationships at court trumped principle in the Old Regime.

Shaken by the Sepoy uprising in 1857, the British Raj undertook a vast surveillance of every aspect of Indian life, including its literary output. Years later the outrage stirred by the British partition of Bengal led the Raj to put this knowledge to use. Seeking to suppress Indian publications that it deemed seditious, the British held hearings in which literary criticism led to prison sentences. Their efforts to meld imperial power and liberal principle fed a growing Indian opposition.

In Communist East Germany, censorship was a component of the party program to engineer society. Behind the unmarked office doors of Ninety Clara-Zetkin Street in East Berlin, censors developed annual plans for literature in negotiation with high party officials and prominent writers. A system so pervasive that it lodged inside the authors’ heads as self-censorship, it left visible scars in the nation’s literature.

By rooting censorship in the particulars of history, Darnton's revealing study enables us to think more clearly about efforts to control expression past and present.

Robert Darnton is the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and the director of the University Library at Harvard University. Great case studies of the bureaucracy of censorship and it's inpact on literature

The standard story of how censorship works is that censors are stupid and simple minded and are easily fooled by authors who out maneuver them by concealing their criticism.

In this wonderful book, Robert Darnton looks at the inner workings of the bureaucracy of censorship by three case studies: France during the Age of enlightenment, India under British rule and the German Democratic Republic. Surprisingly, Darnton finds that a large part of the censor's work are remarkably similar to what editors in publishing houses do. Censors, even in pre-revolutionary France, used to have a high level of knowledge of the subject and sometimes great literary taste of the books they were vetting. The censors were quite often hard working. Obviously they were true believers of the regimes they were serving. They wouldn't carry on their job without believing that they improved both literature and society by stamping out subversive ideas. Darnton sheds light on the constant battles the censors had to fight with the executive power on one front and authors and publishers on the other. The censorship system reached its most advanced stage in the German Democratic Republic, where each level in the state owned culture and publishing industry exercised its own policy while carefully subjecting to limitations imposed by their superiors.

The bottom line is that state run censorship systems are more lot more complicated than some unsophisticated clerks spilling red ink on manuscripts or banning them altogether. The book's strength is Darnton's enormous expertise in 18th century French literary history, and his first hand experience from the fall of GDR and the opening of GDR's archives. I didn't get a totally new view of literary censorship (then I would give it 5 stars) but it was well researched full of amusing small stories from the archives shedding light on the censors clandestine work.

I really wanted to like this book, and I should say up front that it tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the geology of Walden Pond and environs, plus, plus, plus. It is very hard to review, there are many good things in it, all kinds of research conducted over many years. It gets five stars for detail. But it is a real slog to get through. Eventually I gave up, and started skipping and dipping. The prose is very dense and self-indulgent, and an editor should have come in and made the author shorten and simplify the text. It would have been much much better much shorter and written for the general reader -- maybe the author could be persuaded to do a big picture book with text (I'd buy it!). There is a kind of geo-monomania (monomanias are not unheard of in Thoreau studies) going on, which will make the book great for research and libraries, but not for a light read.

The author, for some mysterious unfathomable reason (pond joke), stops his detailed assessment in 1854, when Thoreau still had lots of scientific life in him. There is hardly any natural history or ecology here (except geo-limnology). The best thing in it (for this reader) was the extensive history of the arrival of the ice-age hypothesis in America.

Totally Fresh Comprehension of Walden

Gifted geologists Robert Thorson offers a brilliant analysis of "the place of the book" and the "book of then place." In prose worthy of his subject, he deepens our understanding of Thoreau's evolution from transcendentalist to a passionate scientific observer who was attuned to the changing debates of his era. But a paradox: Thoreau was ahead of most in understanding and accepting Darwin but postponed his embrace of glacial theory until he had finally finished Walden. Easily one of the ten best and most important books written about Walden and Thoreau.

Nice read and lots of background info for Walden, but some parts are a little slow, Still a great book that explains a lot about the geographic and geological influence on Thoreau.

Robert E. Howard vs. H. P. Lovecraft: A Battle of Wits and Writing

While known primarily for his scholarly essays on Robert E. Howard, Mr. Leno's latest work combines his knowledge of Howard with that of H. P. Lovecraft. This magnificent piece reflects the tireless care that goes into all of Leno's research - in particular the Old Gent's correspondence and epistolary rivalry with Two-Gun Bob.

What readers will find refreshing is how Leno manages to write a book that appeals not only to academics who wish to poor over the literary bones of these epic writers of pulp era fiction, but also to those who simply enjoy the narratives of Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft. There is a much-needed humanity in Leno's writing, which demonstrates the very real foibles experienced by each of these authors, and allows readers insight into their works that is sorely lacking in the less capable hands of some critics of genre material.

The overall presentation makes this very reader-friendly as the book is easily translatable to Kindle and phones. I downloaded this to my Android and the pages are easy to see and the flow of text makes for a breeze to read.

I highly recommend Mr. Leno's fine work as an example of how REH and HPL scholarship should be presented - literarily, yet from a personable perspective. Bravo.

Insightful Essays on Robert E. Howard

As good as the title essay is, exploring one Howard's best stories (“Pigeons From Hell”), the other two essays are even better. One examines possible influences on Howard's humorous westerns. The other discusses possible influences on “The Frost-Giant's Daughter.”
This book's major weakness comes in the title essay. It's well-written. I believe it is spot on about “Pigeons From Hell” being Howard's response to Lovecraft's preference for New England as a setting for weird fiction. It's also right about “Pigeons” containing aspects of the debates Howard and Lovecraft engaged in, in their letters to each other. The weakness is that I believe that Leno misunderstands Lovecraft and his attitudes. For instance, Leno seems to think that Lovecraft would be insulted to recognize a thinly disguised version of himself in a story incorporating Southern folklore and advocating the South as an even better setting for horror than New England. Yet, Lovecraft and other writers he knew put each other in their stories on a number of occasions. Their reactions come across as good natured ribbing. For instance, Robert Bloch -the future author of Psycho, put Lovecraft in a story, and Lovecraft responded by having a thinly disguised version of Bloch meet his demise in another story. As for Howard's advocacy of Southern horror, didn't Lovecraft himself urge Howard to utilize Southern folklore and locales? In using New England as a setting and extolling it as the best setting for horror, Lovecraft was essentially following the advice to “write what you know.” He basically encouraged Howard to do the same. I don't think Lovecraft would be insulted that Howard favored his region just as Lovecraft covered his own as a setting for horror. Yes, Howard and Lovecraft engaged in contentious debates, but the indications are that Lovecraft treasured those letters from Howard. Maybe “Pigeons” would have inspired Lovecraft to write his own story in response.
That weakness though, still is not enough for me to consider giving this book less than five stars. That weakness is actually stimulating, providing food for thought and discussion. I highly recommend these essays to all Robert E. Howard fans.

Brian Leno? 5-Stars!

Brian Leno? Well, the big debate began in 2006, back when Leo Grin’s The Cimmerian was raising litcrit bars with every issue—a debate that lasted three years, only ending because Leo ceased publishing the print journal.

I held a front row seat. Don Herron promoted me out of the Esoteric Order of Dagon roster—the longstanding amateur press association devoted to H. P. Lovecraft—believing I’d prosper in the TC venue, where ideas trumped personalities, where the leaders participated, an arena quite unlike the EOD.

Indeed, TC was an arena, with hotly debated disagreements in most issues, but always to promote deeper understanding.

In the February 2006 issue Grin introduced (in the appropriately named “New Blood” editorial) Brian Leno’s “stellar essay that points out how the genesis of one of Howard’s greatest stories can be directly attributed to the symbiotic literary association he shared with the horrormeister from Providence.”

I read “Lovecraft’s Southern Vacation” in one gulp, and saw Conan-red.

Most Lovecratians will, the first time they read it. HPL acting and reacting like a normal person, in his mature years! Unheard of!

My EOD-influenced reaction was that Leno’s wrong. A Lovecraft fan named Graeme Phillips even responded with a lengthy rebuttal in the aptly-named “Lion’s Den” letter column.

For reasons unrelated, I began corresponding with Phillips. Leno’s name came up, and I remember complaining about his “deliberately controversial” approach.

Then I noted that Leno in a Den letter politely refuted the charge that being Howardian meant being biased. Where he patiently explained that he could always appreciate HPL, both “the man and his writing.”

Most Leno remarks were made to answer the rebuttal by Phillips; and I began to help Phillips organize his next stand. I dug deep, only to realize that Leno was not entirely wrong.

Some of his facts were disconcerting, but facts nonetheless. To bolster my own prejudices, I decided he had made “selective use” of these. I dug deeper.

Finally, though I still didn’t fully agree with everything Leno wrote, the time came for me to warn Phillips that he and I were no longer on the same page, either. I alerted him first: “I admit that I changed stripes … it does appear to me that Howard put in a few in-jokes, at least into ‘Pigeons.’ I didn’t want to accept that at first….”

For August 2008’s Den, I submitted (tactfully couched within several windy paragraphs) this opinion: “I think Brian’s theory has real merit.” And I thanked Brian for identifying a “brilliantly open-ended possibility—a puzzle, for now at least, that we can all enjoy.”

To be fair, Phillips never had much of a problem with the “Pigeon” interpretation, but he did object to a delivery that included (it seemed to us) contentious, irrelevant and unnecessary claims made about HPL. The “Pigeon” assertions, Phillips allowed, might be true, but they’d mean very little since we can’t be certain.

What I still couldn’t admit is that something did come between these two highly regarded authors, Howard and Lovecraft, the result of debating contrasting worldviews in their correspondence. That their differences had grown, until each began to harbor—knowingly or not—degrees of resentment directed towards the other.

I dug even deeper.

The proverbial “last word” in the Leno-Phillips debate turned up at the last minute, in December 2008’s Den, in the last print-issue of TC. Turns out it had fallen to me—I would have the last word—admitting finally (with some justification) that in the end I was forced to side with Leno.

Brian Leno? Well, his “Lovecraft’s Southern Vacation” essay is remarkably incisive. A new way of interpreting and appreciating Howard’s classic horror story “Pigeons from Hell.” And, for provoking a glimpse of HPL in the unvarnished state, more authentic than so many portraits contrived in the sedate world of Lovecraft studies.

That debate-in-print is ended. Leno’s essay is proven best-in-class effective; but with all the digging, I found even more Leno-favoring evidence to weigh in on one day, when I add to the discussion in Lovecraft: The Great Tales.

Vocabulary surprise

I don't know if I just didn't read this in the description when I bought the book, but when I opened it up this evening I found-to my surprise-that there is a list in the back of the book with the verbs used in the text. My French skills are sufficient for most things, but I have to admit that the presence of that reference material is comforting.

Other than that, the book arrived in great shape, just as expected.

I love this book!

I've read it twice for two different classes and loved it both times. It's written in a basic enough level of french for most intermediate students to understand, and it reads very quickly as you don't want to put it down! I love Meursault!

About the Author

RAINER MARIA RILKE (1875–1926) is considered one of the German language’s greatest twentieth-century poets. Editions of Rilke’s Letters on God and Letters to a Young Woman, The Book of Hours: Prayers to a Lowly God, Duino Elegies, and New Poems are published by Northwestern University Press.

JAMES D. REID is an associate professor of philosophy at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. He has written on the philosophical legacies of Kant, Fichte, Dilthey, and Heidegger, among others. He coedited Thoreau’s Importance for Philosophy (2012).

Fabulous

This review is for Part One of the book (chapters 1-3). Dr. Reid has written a wonderful book on poetry, philosophy, and the philosophy of poetry. For anyone interested in any of those three subjects, this book should be on your bookshelf. To me, chapter two alone is worth owning this book! Dr. Reid's argument that objective truth begins when we care about things, is brilliant; after all, we only seek the truth about certain things because we care about those things (and we don't seek the truth of things we don't care about).

I believe that it is important to note that Dr. Reid's writing style is academic. I mention this because I recently read a review of another book (by a different author on a different subject) where one of the "criticisms" was that the book was written is a pedantic style which was not readily digestible for the "average" reader. Unless your IQ is remarkably high (and not that you think you are smarter than average; everyone thinks that), this is not a "page-turner" that you will be getting through in a matter of a few hours. This is a scholarly book on a scholarly topic and requires work by the reader. If this is a criticism then we as human beings are doomed. There are times where the book gets weighty; there are times where Dr. Reid makes reference to things readers will probably not be familiar with; there are times when you will have to set the book down and think about what was just said. It's a philosophy book; it is supposed to do those things. Any criticism that the book is difficult to read is more a criticism of the reader than the author. [I'm off my soapbox.]

I have not commented on Part Two because I do not speak or read German so I cannot in good conscience say anything about the quality of the translation. The poetry itself is moving and beautiful, but I cannot say whether that is the work of the poet or the translator. I will say that if you are a fan of poetry then Part Two is well worth owning the book as well.

A wonderful book on a topic that is often overlooked. I highly recommend it!

Terrific, Informative Read

I recently finished reading Reid's book, Being Here is Glorious. It is written beautifully, poetically.
His essays offer many terrific insights, and include a wonderful accounting of the longstanding philosophical bias against poetry, paying special attention to Plato's writings.
Reid has also made me see how some of my own philosophical writing is "poetical."
Having never read Rilke, I was completely taken in by his poetry, and I can't help but believe that Reid's translation contributed greatly to this experience.
While Reid’s book is poetical, I don’t mean to sell his scholarship short. His work is philosophically rigorous, offering an extensive set of references and engagements with the secondary literature on Rilke, Plato, and others, in the endnotes.
The book would be a welcome addition to courses in Aesthetics, but it should also appeal to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry, and the meaning of being human.
This is a really fabulous book.

Some of these tables and diagrams will also be found of such a general nature that they can be used when the designing requirements are different from any of those mentioned. No tables are presented based on the flat slab recommendations of the Joint Committee as these recommendations are so conservative that they are not used to any extent.

The authors have for some time been preparing and using in their practice various tables and diagrams in order to finally obtain complete data in the most, convenient form and of the greatest value to the majority of designing engineers. The collection given in this book is the result.

No attempt has been made to develop theory or to duplicate information not directly relating to concrete design which can conveniently be found in other handbooks possessed by all designers.

It is interesting to use comtemporary strength values for reinforcing steel and concrete and compare the results of using these tables and graphs to contemporary ASD methdology. Many of the buldings designed in this era are still serviceable. This is a useful resource for engineers involved in forensic engineering and refurbishing vintage structures; it can give one a reasonable estimate of structural capacity and save time and follow-on effort. I have used this in investigations of old buildings being turned into contemporary offices, loft apartments and condos.

The author's object in foisting still another bridge book upon his long-suffering brother engineers is twofold, viz.:

First. A desire to leave behind him for the benefit of the next generation of bridge specialists, in shape readily available for use, a solution of all the major economic problems in bridgework and an extensive treatment of most of the minor ones. He has endeavored to cover every possible economic question of importance; and, if any such be omitted, it is because he did not recognize their existence. To what extent he has succeeded in this endeavor can be determined only by the reception which the book meets from the engineering profession.

Second. To show to specialists in all branches of the engineering profession the type of book on economics which, in his opinion, each specialty needs and how broad and thorough, if possible, should be the treatment of the subject.

The author feels that he is the logical person to write a book upon the economics of bridgework, because he has been investigating the matter for thirty-seven years, and has dealt at length, upon more than twenty different occasions, in books, pamphlets, and memoirs, with various economic topics on the subject of bridge designing, as can be seen by referring to the list of the said writings given in the Appendix.

An explanation but not an apology is needed for the fact that certain portions of "Bridge Engineering" have been copied in a few of the chapters. As that work from start to finish is impregnated with the fundamental idea of economy,, and as this book is intended to cover the entire field of bridge economics, it was necessary to include herein the gist of all that appears on the matter in that work, as well as the substance of all the author's economic writings that are subsequent to its publication. Wherever anything previously written on the subject could advantageously be modified or enlarged, this has been done; but where it could not be improved upon or augmented, the only thing to do was to copy it verbatim. Hence, should any reader see any portion of "Economics of Bridgework," which appears familiar to him, if he has read this preface he will understand the reason therefor and will, the author trusts, excuse the occurrence.
