There is no subject upon which the American public should be better informed, and none, perhaps, in which it should feel greater pride, than in that of the foremost invention of the age, the Electric Telegraph; f6r aside from the fact that three of the best systems in use are American inventions, and that to our countrymen is due the credit of producing the first successful recording electric telegraph, it is more generally used in this country than in any other, and probably more than in all others combined, for the common convenience of mankind.

In Europe, with the exception of Great Britain, the use of the telegraph is almost wholly under the control of the governments, and its use restricted by the high rates of tolls to the wealthier classes, while in this country it is alike open to all, and telegraphic despatches are "household words" among the poorer as well as the wealthier citizens.

Good historical reference of very early telegraph.

This is a "must have" book if you have any interest in early land-line telegraph. George B. Prescott wrote this book in the early 1860's, so there aren't any photographs - there are several beautiful hand drawings included (as one would expect from a book from this period.) This book, plus American Telegraphy & Encyclopedia of the Telegraph (W.M.Maver) for me are the definitive references for this facet of American telegraph history, prior to the Spark Gap Era...

A well written history of the electric telegraph....

This is an extensively researched, well written, and comprehensive story of the electric telegraph. Given that there are a handful of people in the world who would enjoy a seemingly boring subject as this, I applaud Mr. Prescott's dedication to this work. My career as a telecommunications technician now makes more sense thanks to this work. In fact, this work illustrates the foundation upon which all of our modern communications is built upon. My only minor wish (and the reason for withholding the fifth star) is that there were more diagrams, tables, and illustrations to serve as examples to more laypeople. For those few of us who care about such matters, I salute you Mr. Prescott. Well done, sir.

About the Author

Riley E. Dunlap is Dresser Professor and Regents Professor of Sociology at Oklahoma State University, Past President of the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Environment & Society, and Past Chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on Environment & Technology. He is senior editor of the Handbook of Environmental Sociology and Sociological Theory and the Environment, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Robert J. Brulle is Professor of Sociology and Environmental Science at Drexel University, and Past Chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on Environment & Technology. He is author of Agency, Democracy, and Nature: The U.S. Environmental Movement from a Critical Theory Perspective and co-editor of Power, Justice and the Environment. He was a 2012 -2013 Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.

A Must Read for Climate Believers, Skeptics and the Who-Cares Crowd

This anthology of studies covers the important but poorly publicized transition of the traditional "Earth Day" legacy environmental movement into today's climate change movement, which is dominated by coalitions, not stand-alone Big Green organizations. The scholars represented appear to be a vanguard of sociological researchers paying attention to the public policy influence of the emerging climate change movement, but seem surprisingly blind to the old-line coalitions of foundations, such as the Environmental Grantmakers Association (1985), that are the actual forces behind the changes they study. As in most public policy arenas, the power of the purse rules over all environmental groups, which is perhaps too mundane for academicians.
The last section of this otherwise credible work unfolds a series of stale deprecations of climate "deniers" lifted almost verbatim from the over-earnest rants of Naomi Oreskes and the let's-imprison-deniers plans of the Union of Concerned Scientists. The automaton-like repetition of "The Consensus Narrative" of climate alarmists becomes amusing once the shock wears off of seeing tenured professors displaying personal rage against all who disagree with their august wisdoms, such as they are. The only insight the last section has to offer is how spleen is rewarded in the climate crowd, which is evidently just another publication to forestall the Publish Or Perish curse of academe. A fresh idea or two would have improved the dish, like Major Gray's chutney improves an unremarkable curry.
Read it for sure. If you're a climate believer or a skeptic, you need to know about the movement transformations so well described in the first half of this mixed bag of sociological perspectives, and if you don't give a hoot about the argument, the last half will make you glad or mad or smile at the little boys fighting over a dead cat. At least it's all well written.

An excellent scholarly resource

This comprehensive, mostly easy-to-read book offers a great resource for graduate students. I used it in an environmental sociology seminar and found that it helped students from different academic sub-disciplines to quickly get up to speed on trends in sociological research on climate change. Each chapter ends with comments and suggestions for future research directions, which served as an invaluable resource for the students.

The object of this volume is to give a practical outline of the Metallurgical Treatment of such Silver Ores as are adapted to Amalgamation-that is, of ores whose character allows them to undergo treatment with quicksilver, with which metal silver forms an amalgam.

The processes of amalgamation may be classified as the Wet Process and the Dry Process. Ores which require no preliminary chemical preparation are adapted for direct amalgamation by the wet process. Ores which have to be treated by the dry process have to be crushed dry, and are roasted before being submitted to amalgamation-treatment which involves some very delicate manipulation and skill.

Professor Clarence King (in one of his Reports to the United States Government, to which, as will be mentioned presently, I have to acknowledge my indebtedness) has given an excellent account of amalgamation by the wet process; and from this report I extract a description of the Washoe process, as practised on the Comstock lode.

The ONLY authoritative reference for early aircraft

By aircraft, I mean airplanes, blimps, dirigibles, and balloons (hot air and gas). If you ever wanted to build a replica of an early airplane, or wondered how they were constructed and powered, this book will prove indispensable in answering all your questions. Victor covers all aspects of aircraft construction, engines, propellers, structures, covering, etc.

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

A Vaccine Against Despair

Recently, Academic Questions asked me to pick one book that would make a better “common reading” for incoming college freshmen than the texts commonly assigned. Then, I chose William Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses, but if I were asked today, it would be Mark Edmundson’s Self and Soul. Why?

For one, it’s wildly subversive, ripping off the K-12 straitjacket incoming freshmen still wear. Later, Self and Soul can act as a tonic and antitoxin for numb university students suffering from the curricular mishmash of multiculturalism, anti-colonialism, social justice, sustainability, rampant materialism, and political correctness. Professor Edmundson has written a fierce book, at times an angry book, and most of all, a dangerous book. It threatens all the academic shibboleths. The vocabulary alone will shock most students. "It, like, talks all about having a soul? And being heroic? And Truth? Isn’t `Truth' a violation of the campus speech code?" Probably. All the more enticing for the budding scholar. Edmundson reminds me of Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood, and the protagonist's conception of Jesus:

“Later he saw Jesus move from tree to tree in the back of his mind, a wild ragged figure motioning him to turn around and come off into the dark where he might be walking on the water and not know it and then suddenly know it and drown.”

That’s what Edmundson is doing—beckoning, no, daring his readers to join Achilles, Plato, Christ, and other rebels who risk seeking more out of life, who seek the higher satisfactions of the Soul.

We all know Self—immediate satisfaction of our appetites. Today, our culture asks, what else is there? Well, the subtitle of Self and Soul is A Defense of Ideals. Nothing needs defending more than ideals. The temper of our postmodern times doesn’t like ideals. Ideals (Edmundson’s Big Three are heroism, Truth, and compassion) are accused of being irritating or phony. We tread water in a sea of irony. Anyone who aspires to an ideal can expect only derision (picture Jesus as a guest on The Daily Show). History gave us Achilles (the ideal of martial courage and honor), Plato and Socrates (the ideal of examining life to find Truth whatever the cost), and Jesus (the ideal of Selfless compassion). Today, ideals such as these make us uncomfortable. Why now?

Edmundson blames, in part, Shakespeare and Freud. What? An English professor who has a beef with the Bard? Edmundson notes how Shakespeare’s shining mirror of the world reflects more ignoble than noble, more knave than hero, more fool than sage. Shakespeare was not an idealist, and his "invention of the human" is rarely anyone you would want as a neighbor.

For his part, Freud saddled us with a conception of man as nebbish, someone who, at best, can hope only to reconcile with his neuroses and attain a tepid, flickering sense of well-being. This is Modern Man, “a creature of need, not of desire,” as Edmundson says. It’s no wonder students are glum and distracted by shiny things. Is this all there is? One thinks of Saul Bellow’s Henderson the Rain King whose protagonist’s inner voice of spiritual emptiness repeats, “I want, I want, I want.” Edmundson’s formulation: “Stuffed full of pointless information, we can consider ourselves wise. With a sack of minute, ephemeral truths on our backs, we can imagine that we possess the Truth. We feed ourselves incessantly and are still starved—which only makes us more insistent to consume.” For students, this is the way it is—nothing lasts, everything is relative, the game is fixed, no one can keep up. Let’s go get stoned. But still, "I want, I want, I want."

When I first heard Edmundson lecture on the Self and the Soul, I thought, "This is what my students need to hear." His prescription is to dump the postmodern “incredulity toward all metanarratives” and hang out with some pre-modern idealists. Edmundson, like Tennyson's Ulysses, seems to say,

"Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world."

Every page of this important book glitters with insight and wisdom for our unread youth because Self and Soul is really about them. To read it is to face the questions Anthony Kronman propounded in Education's End: Why Our Colleges and Universities Have Given Up on the Meaning of Life--one must ask not just what is the meaning of life but what is the meaning of my life?

Edmundson does not shy from pointing out the price for truly following an ideal—think of Achilles (and Hector), Socrates, and Jesus. Death, death, death, and death. But what’s the price if you don’t? Edmundson, too, will pay a price. Despite the Harvard University Press imprimatur, most of what he says is taboo or antithetical to the prevailing orthodoxies in higher education where history has become "histories," reality has become "realities," and Truth has become "truths." You can read the whole book without ever being subjected to "race, class, and gender."

Self and Soul belongs on every Freshman bookshelf (make that every bookshelf) as a vaccine against despair. What more stimulating life companions can one have once Edmundson has introduced them: Achilles, Plato, Socrates, Jesus, Buddha, Confucius (and William Blake, William Wordsworth, Percy Shelley, idealists of creativity). Edmundson argues that where Soul was, Self has come to be. He says, “current popular culture . . . is largely a culture that simulates Soul. What passes for current-day culture is often the fabrication of the Soul States.” As Self presses ever more closely about us, publication of Self and Soul marks a reawakening and starting point for a more enlightening academic journey and a more satisfying life.

A work of high ambition

Everything Mark Edmundson writes is worth reading and this latest book, a study of idealism and its critics from ancient times to the present, is in many ways his masterpiece. The two currents Edmundson discerns in world culture between the celebration of the soul and the elevation of the self turns out to be an excellent tool for understanding, and linking, thinkers as disparate as Jesus, Buddha, Shakespeare (this chapter is one of the most provocative essays on Shakespeare I've read), Freud and the Romantics. This is a synthetic work of the sort of breadth and ambition no one writes any more.

Are ideals good or bad

In our pragmatic age, where success is all and he who dies with most toys wins, do ideals matter? What are ideals? Do we still have any? Are ideals good or bad? These questions form the heart of Mark Edmundson’s challenging, remarkably even-handed and erudite study of the world in which we live and the worlds which came before it, as exemplified by differing sets of ideals. Achilles, the warrior, Jesus, the compassionate, Plato the contemplative as well as Shakespeare and Freud, the anti-idealists. I normally don’t read books without stories, but this is a story alright and one which I think everyone should read. The book is Self and Soul - a defense of ideals, published by the Harvard press. Read it and think again.

Amazing information if you are a Christie fan.

I was amazed at all the information in this book. Concentrating on the types of poisons used by Agatha Christie in her novels had to be pretty much a labor of love for British chemist Kathryn Harkup because you can tell immediately that she is also a fan of this great icon of crime fiction. The book is written from the British point of view with changes in book titles noted for the American market. I really had my doubts that this subject matter could be presented in such a way that it held my attention for the time it took to read the book, but by the end I found myself wishing there was just one more chapter. But then I would have wanted another and another.

The book is very stylishly presented with artwork which is wonderfully evocative of the 1930s art deco style that I somehow assign to the Christie novels even though they were not all written during, or for, that time period. Maybe the really good television series has something to do with that. Each chapter deals with one specific poison beginning with arsenic, then belladonna, cyanide, digitalis, eserine, hemlock, monkshood, nicotine, opium, phosphorus, ricin, strychnine, thallium, and veronal. Each chapter leads off with a brief synopsis of the major novel, or in one instance a short story, the author will be using as an example of the use of that specific poison, then moves on to the story (history) of the poison, how the poison works in the body to kill, whether there is an antidote, some real-life cases, and then how Christie used the poison. I had been afraid the chemistry associated with where the poison comes from and how it works within the body would have been either too technical or too boring for me to enjoy. Wow, was I ever wrong. I discovered all kinds of wonderful facts. This book is wonderfully readable by those of us who aren't trained in the science of chemicals. Plus Kathryn Harkup has a very wry sense of humor which caused me to get some strange looks when I was sitting in a doctor's waiting room laughing out loud while reading a book about poisons. Let's just say the chairs on each side of me became vacant when someone asked what book I was reading. This is the type of book Agatha Christie fans will keep right on the shelf with all their copies of the novels for reference during future re-readings of the novels. Because let's face it, if you love Agatha Christie novels you don't read them just once.

Another fascinating section of the book is Appendix 1: Christie's Causes of Death. This is a chart listing each novel and short story written by Agatha Christie and the method of the murder in that story. Sometimes, with multiple victims there are multiple murder methods. I found this absolutely fascinating and used the list to make sure I do own each story Christie wrote. Actually I own them multiple times over, but there is no need to go into my personal addiction here.

In discussing how Christie used the poisons the author has revealed some spoilers, but she always warns the reader to skip ahead to another section if they aren't familiar with the story and don't want to know who and how. I really appreciated how Harkup complimented Christie on her thoroughness and knowledge when it was warranted, but she didn't hesitate on several occasions to point out that Christie had gotten some things wrong. Interesting for me was how seldom Christie made mistakes in her information.

This book is most definitely aimed at the devoted Agatha Christie fan. I found it fascinating and if you didn't, well........I challenge you to a duel with the infamous Calabar bean!

Added Sept. 10, 2015: I received this book as an ARC through the Amazon Vine Voices program. Often ARC copies don't hold up very well over time and they will have portions omitted because it is not the shelf-ready book. I enjoyed this one so much I purchased the finished copy in hard cover to keep on my shelf for reference material when I'm reading mysteries.

For Christie buffs and murder afficionados - but not as involving as hoped for such a golden idea

Agatha Christie wrote a lot of mysteries where the method was poison. Poison wasn't all that easy to get, and the effects of poison aren't usually the instant death we see on TV. Kathryn Harkup has put together a compendium of poisons known to Christie, with a description of the use, effects, place in the pharmacopia, ease of obtaining, and so on. With notes relating each poison to the Christie book(s) where it was used.

Some interesting points: there are more chemists and scientists and druggists than you might expect in Christie's books, reflecting the ways poison could be obtained then and throwing more people under suspicion. Christie made some large and small mistakes about poisons, some of which seem deliberate.

You won't learn how to poison people from this book (whew) - the Internet is your best source there. Just don't search from your home computer, or hide your IP address when you do and clear your search history. There isn't as much Christie as one might hope. The writing is serviceable. The alphabetic organization prevents more general discussion, I think.

This seemed like a golden idea to me - Christie is popular and important, and people love the idea of poison. If you're a Christie buff you'll want to read this. If you are interested in forensics generally or even in poisons specifically, there are better sources. But the book just didn't sparkle or surprise as much as I hoped.

An entertaining read on the poisons of Agatha Christie books.

A great read for those who are Agatha Christie fans, or just science and general knowledge fans. Each chapter is dedicated to a poison and follows the A is for Arsenic, B is for Belladonna, etc. Very thorough with references to Ms. Christie's books, it breaks down the history and science of the various poisons and really tells you how a lot of the poisons work, many are very gruesome killers. Not for the faint of heart.
