This is the story of the men who built and ran their own homemade cars in pioneer SCCA and Cal Club races on town streets, airports and then the first purpose-built American racetracks. Buy this new edition!

There are really no other books that come close. If you are interested in homebuilt racers, this is what you want. If you are into the glory days of the trans-am, there is a separate book for that. If you want to know all about the Scarab, I saw a copy going for almost $100 solely on that topic... but I would recommend this book first. Allan Girdler knows so much about racings motorcycles and cars, you're in for a treat! The new edition of this book is a great bargain and of good quality.

Complete coverage of the time when "the little guys: with ideas and home engineering could challenge and sometimes beat the factory teams in sports var racing. Covers the Jim Hall GM connection very well and devotes a fair share of space to Old Yellow.

A good overview of the sports car specials of the era

A very good overview of the sports racing machines of the era, drawing on contemporary reports to flesh out the specs and performance of many of them. A balanced approach to the vehicles' relative merits. Ken Miles's early cars, as well as others of the late 1940's and '50's, are of particular interest. More sophisticated builds, such as the Scarabs, Chaparrals and McLarens, as well as the early V8 experimentation with Chevy, Ford and BOP aluminium engines, are also dealt with.
