To bring to the great lay mind some slight idea of the intricacy and the involved detail of railroad operation is the purpose of this book. Of the intricacies and involved details of railroad finance and railroad politics; of the quarrels between the railroads, the organizations of their employees, the governmental commissions, or the shippers, it says little or nothing. These difficult and pertinent questions have been and still are being competently discussed by other writers.
The author wishes to acknowledge the courtesy of the editor and publishers of Harper's Monthly, Harper's Weekly, The Saturday Evening Post, and Outing in permitting the introduction into this work of portions or entire articles which he has written for them in the past. He would also feel remiss of he did not publish his sincere acknowledgements to "The American Railway," a compilation from Scribner's Magazine, published in 1887, Mr. Logan G. F. Carter's "When Railroads Were New," and Mr. Frank H. Spearman's "The Strategy of Great Railroads." Out of sizable reference library of railroad works, these volumes were the most helpful to him in the preparation of certain chapters of this book.

The modern railroad

Modern here means about 1910. I found it a thoroughly interesting description of how a railroad was run at that time. Unfortunately, it did not include the illustrations of the original although it did have all the captions. It was interesting nevertheless.

A Interesting Historical Document

The "Modern" in the title refers to the time the book was written: 1911. It does have a reasonable coverage of history up to that time. The writing style is very flowery, which I associate with early 1900s' writing.
The emphasis is on people, not hardware. It covers everyone from gandy dancers and clerks to upper management. Very little coverage of equipment.
The book was probably scanned and digitized. If so, it was done very well. I found none of the usual "d" rather than "c l" or "m" for "r n," etc. Unfortunately, although the picture captions are included, the pictures themselves are not.
All in all, an unusual and interesting book.

Railroads as early industrial organizations (circa 1910)

The technology and the romance are not the foci here - it is the organization of the early 20th century corporations that ran the railroads. As I work in a very safety-conscious infrastructure, it was a illuminating to see the roots of how modern corporations are organized and run, at least on a operational and marketing level.
It does sometimes read as an Horatio Alger booster book - a way to encourage and guide the aspirant railroad businessman. It is remarkably free of modern cynicism but gets the message across that business is to make money by serving and that safety is in everyone's interest.
It is an enjoyable read - I've read it twice!
