In the 1930s African Americans faced three distinct historical crises that impacted the lives of African Americans directly—the Great Depression, the existential-identity crisis, and the Italo-Ethiopian War, with its threat of a race war. A sizeable body of black poetry was produced in this decade, which captured the new modes of autonomy through which black Americans resisted these social calamities. Much of it, however, including the most influential protest poems, was dismissed as “romantic” by major, leftist critics and anthologists. Anthems, Sonnets, and Chants: Recovering the African American Poetry of the 1930s, by Jon Woodson, uses social philology to unveil social discourse, self fashioning, and debates in poems gathered from anthologies, magazines, newspapers, and individual collections. The first chapter examines three long poems, finding overarching jeremiadic discourse that inaugurated a militant, politically aware agent. Chapter two examines self-fashioning in the numerous sonnets that responded to the new media of radio, newsreels, movies, and photo-magazines. The third chapter shows how new subjectivities were generated by poetry addressed to the threat of race war in which the white race was exterminated. The black intellectuals who dominated the interpretative discourses of the 1930s fostered exteriority, while black culture as a whole plunged into interiority. Anthems, Sonnets, and Chants delineates the struggle between these inner and outer worlds, a study made difficult by a contemporary intellectual culture which recoils from a belief in a consistent, integrated self.

Review
“Jon Woodson’s Anthems, Sonnets, and Chants is a thoroughly engaging work. He makes a convincing case for not only reading a wide range of neglected poetry from the period, but for reading it through the rich interpretive lens he provides. This is a major work of scholarship which genuinely breaks new ground in the field.” —James A. Miller, professor of English and American studies, The George Washington University

From the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Arts Movement
By Whit Frazier
There's a gap in the critical discussion of black literature between the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement. "Anthems, Sonnets and Chants", a study of the black poets of the 1930's, is a vital contribution toward the understanding of this little understood period of literary history. Jon Woodson uses social philology -- a method developed by Rachel Du Plessis in her excellent "Genders, Races, and Religious Cultures in Modern American Poetry" -- to explore how the social conditions of post-depression America, a difficult sense of developing identity, and the Ethiopian-Italian war influenced black poetry in the 1930's.
The scope of the book is impressive: because the publishing world of the 30's wasn't as open to black poets as the publishing world of the 20's, and consequently less books of poetry were published by black poets, Woodson has gone exhaustively through the poetry of the decade published in magazines like "The Crisis," "Opportunity" and others. In the course of this literary excavation, he discusses cinema and its relationship to the social realism of Richard Wright -- how Wright's poem "Transcontinental" (included, along with many other poems in the appendix) plays off Louis Aragon's incendiary Marxist poem "Red Front"; he discusses the Kabbalist influences in Melvin Tolson's poetry; he discusses the wordplay and sleights of hand poets such as Langston Hughes used to poke fun at black leaders like WEB Du Bois; he discusses the importance of the black sonnet, and how the black sonnet is used symbolically as the body, as a means of subversion and as a means of re-defining cultural histories, and finally he discusses how the Ethiopian-Italian war captured the imagination of black people in America, and how black poets responded to this. Most importantly, despite the familiar writers listed above, Woodson introduces us to a whole gallery of gifted black poets few have ever heard of.
The method, scope, ambition and success of "Anthems, Sonnets and Chants" make it an important addition to the study of American literature, Modernism and Black cultural history.
