A must-read for serious students of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.

This is a fascinating engineering analysis of the structural effects of the San Francisco earthquake and fire. The authors visited the ruins not long after the event, and before major clearing and reconstruction had taken place. What I found to be the most interesting was the extent of serious structural damage to large buildings like the Fairmont Hotel, the Rialto Building, and the Mills Building, which are still in use today. If you are a serious student of the San Francisco earthquake and fire, the book is a must-read. This particular version is a photocopy (the original is long out of print) with some reproduction issues. The copy that was reproduced had been well marked-up by a previous reader. However, that does not detract from the legibility of the print, which is quite decent. There are a surprising number of photos (over 50), which have been well-chosen to illustrate examples of the damage referred to in the text. The photos suffer somewhat from the copy process, but they are viewable. Unfortunately, the last three photos, a panorama of the city with the damaged buildings labelled, and two maps, were not properly reproduced. Nevertheless, I feel the book is worth four stars.
