A gorgeously illustrated history of the literary, film, and arts counterculture--now in paperback!
Simultaneously a literary movement, ultra-hip subculture, and burgeoning cottage industry, steampunk is the most influential new genre to emerge from the late twentieth century. Spinning tales populated with clockwork leviathans, cannon shots to the moon, and coal-fired robots, it charts alternative histories in which the British Empire never fell and the atom remained unsplit.
Spectacularly illustrated and international in scope, this comprehensive history explores steampunk's many intricate expressions in fiction, cinema, television, comics, and video games, and traces its evolution into a truly global aesthetic that has made its mark on art, architecture, fashion, and music.
From the classic science-fiction of Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and Mary Shelley, through the dystopian futurescapes of Cyberpunk, to the otherworldly imaginings of Hayao Miyazaki, Alan Moore, and China Miéville, author Brian J. Robb sets the key works of steampunk squarely under the lens of his brass monocle and ventures into a world where airships still rule the skies.

Review
“Together with Voyager Press, Robb has crafted a book that does credit to its subject matter: a punked up history, a hybrid of seriousness and playfulness in the format of an olde worlde postmodern book” - ScienceFictionWorld.com “Anyone wondering where that stuff came from – and, really, anyone with less than a Ph.D in Steampunk – will profit from reading this new coffee-table tome by Brian J. Robb, recently published by Voyageur Press” - AustinChronicle.com
“Aesthetically, this book is absolutely gorgeous. It’s impressive - roughly 9-1/2″ x 11″ and heavy, with a beautiful cover, nice heavy coated pages that are full color and look tea-stained and otherwise “aged,” loaded with beautiful photos on every page….Whether you’re a goggles-and-gear-wearing devotee of steampunk or are simply curious, this beautiful book belongs in your library.” - SciFiMafia.com
“There’s been a number of new steampunk-related fiction books released lately that I’m going to be reading over the holidays, but I do love a good non-fiction Steampunk book and one was recently delivered into my hands from the folks at Voyageur Press. And it is beautiful!” - Wired.com
“This is the coffee table book for when you want an illustrated encyclopedia covering the history of steampunk, namechecking important inventors and artists, and pointing out books and movies that may be of interest to steampunk fans.” - Gamma Squad

Good introduction to Steampunk.
By J. Mcdonald
This is certainly a rather well presented, sumptuous volume easily suited to the coffee table; I do, however have a few minor issues with it.
Firstly; if you already own a copy of "The Steampunk Bible" several of the images in that book re-appear here; that's fairly unavoidable give the iconic status some book-jacket covers have taken on, though some of the costume photos and film-stills could have been more varied and better identified; I also think that publication still gives the more rounded account and overview of the genre to date.
This volume does, however, make a very good companion to the "Bible" and is in an impressively larger format.
Robb's book provides an excellent in-depth, authoritative exploration of the literary element of the genre, its origins and antecedents, key works, authors, themes, etc., he also goes into detail with subjects such as graphic novels, the Japanese scene, music - all the diverse elements that come under the Steampunk heading - the only unsatisfactory topic for me is in the definition of what constitutes Steampunk influence in film, TV and video games, which at times can be a little tenuous; this arises from the basic problem that there has yet to be a truly defining Steampunk drama, a successful, iconic movie or series aficionados can unanimously agree on.
That's hardly the fault of the author though and other Steampunk books deal with this territory with much the same inconclusive outcomes. A useful quotation from Abney Park's lead singer is illuminating; "We've had Steampunk movies for as long as we've had movies...It`s just been recently given a name."
In summation then, this is a well-illustrated book with a good informative text, the strongest points being those dealing with the literary and graphic novel side of the genre; if you don`t already own any book on the subject it's a good starting point, its nice to look through, though it lacks the compendium feel of the "Bible" which encouraged "dipping into" more readily.
It`s a very good addition to the growing number of volumes on Steampunk.

Beautiful Book
By Kay Hudson
I bought this book in hopes that it would have more material on Steampunk literature than The Steampunk Bible (another beautifully illustrated book) does, and that proved to be the case. The author goes all the way back to Poe for influences, and includes what for me was a guided tour of many books I'd read long ago (from Burroughs to Moorcock to Blaylock), as well as several favorite movies (especially the Time Machine) and TV shows (The Wild Wild West). Most of the book is, in fact, about "Fantastical Fiction and Fanciful Film," exactly what I was looking for.
My only complaint, and it just isn't enough to lose a star over, is the lack of an index, a flaw which may not concern many readers. All in all a gorgeous, and very informative, book, which has added a number of books to read and movies to watch to my lists.

A guide to the wonderfully "off" world
By Blaine Jack
It's cool! It's fun! It's a guide to the slightly off world of steampunk, where the reality we know is just a bit "different." This is a great guide to a world, a subculture, perhaps the last bastion of some of the most talented, imaginative, and creative people on the planet. A great read!
