I found this book very informative especially for me as i am a novice regarding this history. First of all this was written by an englishman who painted a very balanced write-up. he presents the facts that the waffen ss morphed into a formidable military unit vs a bunch of murderers that most of us grew up on to believe by hollywood(you can guess the rest). second, this was written in 2003 & it is interesting to read another book written in 2011 called Surrender invites death. Surrender somewhat rips off chris bishop`s book but slants it the facts to reflect the WINNER`s PR All in all, i enjoyed this book for representing a unbiased view. This may not be popular but that`s the point. history books are written by winners but we should not ignore the losers`point of view or side of the story. Chris bishop corrects this. --By NiQ

Not impressed

Just got this, a 2003 edition by the way--it's a superficial glance at some Waffen units and some of their Western Front engagements, along with book jacket hype confusing the entire organization with Waffen combat units. My copy has muddy, poor-resolution b&w photos along with long outdated, stale information and repeats of standard errors. Better studies out there.

This book is a good book as far as accounts of the SS go. The book is written so that non combatants can understand the realities behind war for the very young soldiers of the Hitler Jugend while engaging the american army in Europe.

The sometimes sad city by the sound.

I loved this but it was completely different from what I expected. At first I thought it'd be an ode to Seattle landscape and history in terms of the Puget Sound, the mysterious feet on the shore, and Pearl Jam. Then I thought maybe it would be random portions of famous Seattle writers or poets, anthology style.

But no, and for the better. Instead this is a collection of reflections on Seattle's literature, of which scenery and Pearl Jam play a secondary position to tremendously talented writers. Writers who are moody, upbeat, borderline psychotic, and/or very good liars. This is sort of an "end of the series" episode with all the highlights of what makes Seattle's writers significant.

Bars and bookstores, Pioneer Square and on the street, writing takes so many forms as to defy genre as does this book. Parts make you laugh (Jonathan Evison's bad poetry bar) and other parts sting a little, as when a beloved bookstore is converted into something more profitable.

Paul Constant and Mary Ann Gwinn are featured as the last lifeboat survivors in a world where books and especially book reviewing are deemed unnecessary and not worth the print space.

My favorite city is complicated. It has great beauty and talent yet still suffers from the economy of fashion: what's in now may be lost tomorrow. Books are not the necessity of once, before. Yet the fact Powell's remains and that Seattle is a fighter gives hope.

Interesting and well worth a read

I lived in Metro Seattle for two years in the late 90's so I missed out on the evolving literary scenes that unfolded there during the 80's, the earlier parts of the 90's, and after the millennium, as recounted in many of the essays included in this anthology. Reading about them through the essays in this anthology, however, gives me a chance to time travel and get a sense of who inspired and / or mentored the writers who contributed to this anthology; where writers, poets, and book lovers tended to hang out; who stood out as memorable performers in poetry slams or book readings; and Seattle's growing presence as a city of literature.

In addition to the sometimes interestingly quirky historical retrospectives, the essays recounting outreach projects that helped juvenile offenders and military veterans experience the cathartic powers of personal storytelling were quite satisfying reads as well.

Seattle City of Literature: Reflections from a Community of writers is a tribute to the city from the writers that have found their own happy world with the city's literature avenues (book stores) and writers. You learn about some writers and beginnings of other writers in the city. There are now writers inspired by writers of the city. So its all a very jargoned world .. David Wagoner Era..
In some of the interviews with the question.. 'Best neighborhood for a mystery novel/ science fiction'.. you would have to know the place in question or the book to appreciate the answer..
If you know sherman Alexie, Theodore Roethke.. then you wont feel totally left out.

The book provides a wealth of information about Lucretia Borgia. Too bad one has to wade through the author's antipathy for his subject, though by the end of the book he seems to have a grudging respect for her. The author allowed his subjects to reveal themselves, his continual commentary was unneeded and a distraction.

Winterslow is a village of Wiltshire, between Salisbury and Andover, where my father, during a considerable portion of his life, spent several months of each year, latterly, at an ancient inn on the Great Western Road, called Winterslow Hut. One of his chief attractions hither were the noble woods of Tytherleigh or Tudorleigh, round Norman Court, the seat of Mr. Baring Wall, M. P., whose proffered kindness to my father, on a critical occasion, was thoroughly appreciated by the very sensitiveness which declined its acceptance, and will always be gratefully remembered by myself. Another feature was Clarendon Wood - whence the noble family of Clarendon derived their title - famous besides for the Constitutions signed in the palace which once rose proudly amongst its stately trees, but of which scarce a vestige remains. In another direction, within easy distance, gloams Stonehenge, visited by my father, less perhaps for its historical associations than for its appeal to the imagination, the upright stones seeming in the dim twilight, or in the drizzling mist, almost continuous in the locality, so many spectre-Druids, moaning over the past, and over their brethren prostrate about them. At no great distance, in another direction, are the fine pictures of Lord Radnor, and somewhat further, those of Wilton House. But the chief happiness was the thorough quiet of the place, the sole interruption of which was the passage, to and fro, of the London mails.

Duncan Wu is Reader in English Literature at the University of Glasgow. He is the editor of "Romanticism: An Anthology, Women Romantic Poets: An Anthology, Romanticism: A Critical reader, A Companion to Romanticism," and "Wordsworth's Five-Book Prelude," all published by Blackwell. He also edits the "Charles Lamb Bulletin," and is currently preparing a 9-volume edition of Hazlitt's selected works for publication in 1998.

Tom Paulin is G.M. Young Lecturer in English Literature at Hertford College, Oxford University. His major study of William Hazlitt, "The Day-Star of Liberty: William Hazlitt's Radical Style," was published in 1998 by Faber and Faber, publishers of his several volumes of poetry, including "Selected Poems 1972-1990," and of the critical collections "Minotaur: Poetry and the Nation State" (1992) and "Writing to the Moment: Selected Critical Essays 1980-1996."

Too good to miss

The quality of the writing in this book is exceptional, lucid and engaging and challenging. You have to be on your toes to follow the arguments. It is also interesting to see what Hazlitt writes about. It's quite a lesson in cultural history. Many of the passages seem as if they were written about contemporary life rather than the 19th century. Reading this book will prompt you to find more of Hazlitt's essays, which are available free on the web.

Harold, creator of worlds....

Yes, I am a 45 year old man writing a review for a children's book, and, no, I do not think that I ought to be ashamed of myself. A short while ago I stumbled upon a copy of this book by accident and I could't believe the flood of warm and pleasant memories that it brought back. This was perhaps my favorite childhood book, along with the sequels. Maybe this was because from my earliest memories I always wanted to be an artist, and that is what Harold was, an artist with a magic purple crayon. He was more than an artist, he was a creator of worlds. That was important, he wasn't presented as a trivial person doing "art", he was the creative force behind whole new worlds. Or "co-creator", for he often seemed as surprised as the reader at what flowed out of that crayon. While I didn't become an artist, I did work for most of my life as a draftsman and designer. I've seen many, many things in the real world start life as a drawing on my board or computer screen. I think that I kept faith with Harold....

What Is Reality?

This splendid little book starts with the protagonist, Harold, "...thinking it over for some time" and deciding to go for a walk in the moonlight.

This may seem unremarkable, but it is not.

There is no moon. There is nothing to walk on. There is nowhere to go.

For the only things that are real are Harold and the purple crayon. Otherwise, the universe in which he finds himself is apparently empty; nothing else is present. But what does nothing look like? It looks like nothing - a blank sheet of paper. But that kind of nothing is just exactly what is needed when what one is holding in one's hand is a purple crayon. And so the adventure gets underway.

The first thing Harold does on setting out is draw a horizontal line.

This may seem unimportant, but it is not.

For what he has drawn is the horizon, and this means that now he is standing on the ground. He can walk on it too...

Next he draws the moon (necessary if the walk is indeed to be in the moonlight). Harold draws it above the horizon - this means that it is in the sky. Now there is a reference point for height, and a world of three dimensions has come into being.

Off he goes, drawing a path, a forest (with only one tree so he won't get lost in it) and a dragon to guard the apples that are growing in the tree. Here the creator encounters unintended consequences, as the dragon that he has wrought is so fearsome as to frighten even him. Harold backs away, his hand shaking, inadvertently drawing a wavy line as he goes.

The wavy line traces out waves, and before he knows it, Harold is underwater in an ocean. He rescues himself by drawing a boat and makes his way to an unknown distant shore.

The rest of the story is about Harold's trying to find his way back home. On the way there are more adventures as Harold searches far and wide. He creates an entire city with many windows but none of them is his.

But then, he remembers how he used to see the moon through the window of his room. And all that is needed for homecoming is to draw a box around the moon - now he is inside looking out.

As Harold draws his bed around him and goes to sleep, I found myself pondering what's real and what is not, and reflecting on those moments when we wonder where we really are and how we ever got to be here.

The opening of an impressionable child's eyes

I read this book when I borrowed it from the library in my elementary school. I am now 18, and still reminisce on my beloved journeys around the world in a hot air balloon with Harold. This is the book that I borrowed for the first time, and then got it later again and again. It is one of the first books that ever opened my mind up to the total loss of imagination to all possibilities. Every time I read it I would think of many more adventures Harold could have had with his mystical purple crayon. Even to this day, I can think of no better book to give a child's imagination a glimpse of what possibilities there are. It is easy reading for the youngest of believers, but gives thought of what could be to even the oldest readers. I personally was not a child who favored reading, but this book was one of the few that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was one that I would read in the library while the class was still in it, and then would bring home for further enjoyment. I cannot recommend this book higher for any child whose imagination can run wild.

A bit "Dry!" but lots of good information

This is from old information at the turn of the century (at one point, the promise of the "new gasoline engines" is discussed). Nonetheless, I found it very helpful and I can't imagine that the way soils hold moisture and the principles used to build up moisture and fertility will have changed. I will be using some of these ideas in my new adventure, moving away from the rat race to a rural place to farm.

A lot of claims are made in this book that look very interesting. While the author provides a lot of supporting data, I can't help but wonder what modern scientists and farmers would make of his claims.

While I hope to never try to make my living from land such as he describes, I also have no intention of removing this book from my Kindle.

Melting...A Classic

This wonderful book used to be one of the few positive lesbian books out there. I know when I found it, years ago, I was comforted by the portrayal of two women making their way in a world that does not want them to be together. They lack even the words to describe their feelings for each other. When one describes her physical reaction to the other's lovemaking as "melting" I thought that was a perfect description for the book. It made all my cynicism melt away for a while.
It's a period piece and a well-written romantic tale that no true romantic will want to miss.

A Timeless Story About Contemporary Issues and Human Feelings

This is a timeless story about contemporary issues and human feelings that is set in an old historical New England community. "Patience and Sarah" is a historical novel of two woman who have discovered love. It is narrated by Grammy Award-winning artist Janis Ian and Emmy Award-winning actress Jean Smart.

The narratives by Ms. Smart and Ms. Ian are certainly excellent. Their experience in vocals at the highest professional level is filled with accolades and awards. The expertise in their voices is showcased in the nuances that appear in caring moments, and in the fleeting thoughts that one must ignore. This historical novel by Isabel Miller is important in our literature history because it tells a tale that is beyond the bounds of time, age, gender, needs, or preferences. Thank you Janis Ian and Jean Smart for keeping this story alive, and for performing it for us so well. I highly recommend this audio book to anyone who loves fine historical novels, or to anyone who loves excellent works on contemporary issues.

PATIENCE AND SARAH was an unexpected suprise to me. As an avid reader, it is books like this that continue to fuel the flames of my reading passion. I found this novel absolutely delightful as a romance story, and unquestionably important as a women's history text. This is an important book for all who consider themselves concerned citizens. The story centers around a lesbian love story but translates its message of sexual awakening, search for identity, and tolerance into a profound reminder of the difficulties surrounding all marginalized groups. I place this novel alongside Simone de Beauvoir's THE SECOND SEX as esential reading that inspires me and has changed the face of women's history forever. the face of society for all women.

Perfect for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fans

4.5 Stars A perfect gift for any dedicated Sci-fi/fantasy fan! This quiz book includes books, movies, television shows, and games in different difficulty levels. Almost every cult classic has at least one question. The question types mix true or false, multiple choice, and open-ended questions. What can I say, it's fun. Geeky, but fun. This book would be great for trivia night. I suggest the print copy so you can flip back and forth easily from the quizzes to the answers.

Just in time for the holidays comes this great stocking-stuffer for that know-it-all geek in your life (if you can't think who that would be, it's probably you).

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Quiz Book is just that. A book full of trivia in the form of quiz's. There are no frills to this book; no essays on topics covered. There are a few scattered black and white drawings of sci-fi/fantasy figures, though nothing obvious (no trademark infringements here!). The drawings are fine - not outstanding but not cheesy amateur work, either. The purpose of this book is not to entertain or enlighten, but to test your knowledge on all things sci-fi/fantasy.

But I think it might almost work better to call it the The Geek's Quiz Book, because the book covers literature, film, television, radio, comics, and video games. I guess the modern fantasy/Sci-Fi fan needs to be much more well-rounded than those of us from a different age.

I went through all the questions in the book and found that I did, not surprisingly, quite well with the questions pertaining to authors and books. I did moderately well with film, television, and radio questions, and really really poorly with anything having to do with anime or video games.

The quizzes are broken down to three different segments, Easy, Medium, and Hard. Each quiz appears to be about ten questions in length and they are in a variety of formats: multiple choice, true or false, short answer, and match-up. For the most part, I thought author Joseph McCullough did a fine job of placing the questions in the right categories (easy, medium, hard), though I did highlight two questions ("In what city would you find Arkham Asylum?" and "What famous puppeteer animated and provided the voice for Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back?"). Both of these are listed in the "hard" category, which I question. Given that these are written for sci-fi fans, these seem pretty easy. But two questions out of 104 quizzes seems like a pretty good record.

I can imagine that it's difficult to put together a quiz book like this, to get the right amount of variety to really test the modern fan. Although I wasn't interested in anything to do with a few subjects, I understand their place in the book. I did, though, think for a while that there were too many questions regarding The Lord of the Rings books and films (particularly, I think, in the Easy and Medium sections). I'm certainly not opposed to these, I just thought we could do with fewer of these in order to have a better variety.

This isn't the sort of book you would typically buy for yourself, but it would make a great gift for anyone who thinks that they know a lot of sci-fi trivia.

Looking for a good book? The Science Fiction and Fantasy Quiz Book is a nice assortment of trivia to test your knowledge of modern science fiction and fantasy and would make a terrific gift.

Exactly as the title states, and that's a good thing

Books, movies, TV shows, video games, comic books, and others I have no idea about are all included here. There’s such a wide variety of genres—I knew a lot more science fiction than fantasy, for example—that there’s no possible way anyone should be near perfect (and if you are, go take a walk or see a football game). I don’t watch Game of Thrones, so I didn’t even attempt the “match character to actor” game; same with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Lost. There are three levels: easy, medium, hard. On the first two quizzes I got 9/10, then a perfect 10 on the third. By the sixth things were getting harder, and by the tenth my average had fallen to 7/10. At 20 quizzes I was at 62%, still in the easy section, kinda my last hurrah.
The thing that most struck me was how good I felt when I got one right that I wasn’t anticipating getting right, like when I got a perfect score for Star Trek species. At times it was positively addicting; “Just one more and then I’ll go sleep, promise. . .” though considering some of my scores, I shoulda left it till morning.
So my final score was 434 out of 1040. I find myself simultaneously annoyed and relieved that it wasn’t higher.
