A sweeping historical study of both American humor and American poetry

Poetry can be funny, and because it is funny that does not disqualify it from being good poetry. American Comic Poetry by Professor Jeff Morgan does us the service of showing us just that. This is a book that will educate its readers about both poetry and comedy. The author spends a good deal of time defining comedy and setting the context for what elements of humor must be present for a comic poem to work.
The book ultimately focuses on three contemporary poets Billy Collins, Thomas Lux and Tony Hoagland, contemporary poets. But the journey to place them in their historical context is well worth reading. The journey from the earliest comic writers in America up until our own time is told with humor and detail. Professor Morgan begins by noting that although the Puritans may not have been a barrel of laughs, there was another tradition present right from the beginning of America, and that is the story of the Native American trickster. He spends time with the giants such as Franklin and Twain but along the way we touch most of the great strains of American poetry. He lingers with Dorothy Parker and Ogden Nash and his analyses especially of Parker are incisive and thoughtful. But along the way we visit the more “serious” American poets such as Dickenson and Poe. This is history of not only the evolution of poetry in America but the evolution of our national taste.

About the Author
Adrian Blevins was born in Abdingdon, VA in 1964, and holds graduate degrees from Hollins University and Warren Wilson College's MFA Program for Writers. A 2002 recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writers' Foundation award for poetry and the author of The Man Who Went Out for Cigarettes, a Bright Hill Press award-winning chapbook, Blevins lives in Roanoke, VA with her husband and three children, and teaches at Roanoke College. She will begin teaching at Colby College in Maine in the fall of 2004.

McElmurray is assistant professor of creative writing at Lynchburg College.

The Once Unmentionable

This is an amazing collection of 32 up close and personal essays exploring the changes in our evolving society, especially in the Appalachia these authors grew up in.

The voice of each author reveals a facet of what it means to be the person they are: a person from Appalachia. Race, class, gender, and stereotypes are explored with honesty. The writing is candid and spectacular.

Strong sense of place in essays

The writing quality varies from gorgeous to good. The subject matter covers a wide variety of "forbidden" topics. The essays explore everything from fundamentalist religion to homosexuality to secrets kept within families. My favorites were those by Silas House and Jayne Ann Phillips.

As an Appalachian escapee ever love bound to the mountains, I reconciled more of myself in those pages than years of contemplation and counseling. Little is known about the historian Florus. His history purports variously to have been written under the emperor Trajan (98-117), and 200 years from the reign of Augustus (27 BC - AD 14). There is considerable diagreement as to his full name, which is given on various manuscripts as Julius Florus, Lucius Anneus Florus, Annaeus Florus, or simply Lucius Annaeus (which led some to attribute his work to the philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca). He may be the same man as the poet and rhetorician Publius Annius Florus, who was born in Africa and was a contemporary of the emperor Hadrian (117-138). He compiled, chiefly from Livy, a brief sketch of the history of Rome from the foundation of the city to the closing of the temple of Janus by Augustus (25 BC). The work, which is called Epitome de T. Livio Bellorum omnium annorum DCC Libri duo, is written in a bombastic and rhetorical style – a panegyric of the greatness of Rome, the life of which is divided into the periods of infancy, youth and manhood. It is often wrong in geographical and chronological details. In spite of its faults, the book was much used as a handy epitome of Roman history, in the Middle Ages, and survived as a textbook into the nineteenth century. In the manuscripts, the writer is variously named as Julius Florus, Lucius Anneus Florus, or simply Annaeus Florus. From certain similarities of style, he has been identified as Publius Annius Florus, poet, rhetorician and friend of Hadrian, author of a dialogue on the question of whether Virgil was an orator or poet, of which the introduction has been preserved.

Nice summary

This is a short history (gave me a chance to look up what epitome meant) of Roman history up to the time of Trajan. It was a very interesting read, but, as you would expect, it's not very long and hardly detailed.

I picked this up while free.

A few years later, when a friend asked her to participate in a bold new venture in a men's medium security prison, Ann had to weigh her curiosity and desire to be of service against her anxiety and fear.
     But she signed on, and for eighteen months went to a remote building at Collins Bay, meeting a group of heavily tattooed book club members without the presence of guards or security cameras. There was no wine and cheese, no plush furnishings. But a book club on the inside proved to be a place to share ideas and regain a sense of humanity.
For the men, the books were rare prized possessions, and the meetings were an oasis of safety and a respite from isolation in an otherwise hostile environment. Having been judged themselves, they were quick to make judgments about the books they read. As they discussed the obstacles the characters faced, they revealed glimpses of their own struggles that were devastating and comic. From The Grapes of Wrath to The Cellist of Sarajevo, Outliers to Infidel, the book discussions became a springboard for frank conversations about loss, anger, redemption, and loneliness.
     The Prison Book Club follows six of the book club members, who kept journals at Walmsley's request and participated in candid one-on-one conversations. Graham the biker, Frank the gunman, Ben and Dread the drug dealers, and the robber duo Gaston and Peter come to life as the author reconciles her knowledge of their crimes with the individuals themselves, and follows their lives as they leave prison. And woven throughout is the determined and compassionate Carol Finlay, working tirelessly to expand her program across Canada and into the United States. 
     The books changed the men and the men changed Walmsley, allowing her to move beyond her position as a victim. Given the choice, she'd forsake the company of privileged friends and their comfortable book club to make the two-hour drive to Collins Bay.

ANN WALMSLEY is a magazine journalist whose work has appeared in The Globe and Mail and Maclean's. She is the recipient of four National Magazine Awards, a Canadian Business Journalism Award and two International Regional Magazine Awards. She founded her first book club at age nine. An Eye-Opening Book About Books In Prisons

This beautifully written, intimate memoir tells the true story of how the author overcame her fear, after suffering from a violent mugging, by helping a friend operate book clubs in two prisons for men in Ontario, Canada. I was particularly intrigued by the natural interweaving of the lives of the prisoners with the themes from the books. Each chapter focuses on one piece of literature and the prisoners' lively discussion of it. The astute observations and insights offered by these men raises the inevitable question of whether literature can offer rehabilitation in addition to education and entertainment. This is a must read for anyone who cares about literature and the justice system.

Having been encouraged to prosecute the subject by offers of assistance from some of the most eminent living mechanical engineers, he is now enabled to present the following further series of memoirs to the public.

Without exaggerating the importance of this class of biography, it may at least be averred that it has not yet received its due share of attention.

Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

Full of typos

There is nothing wrong with the original, however this version, published by Simon & Brown, is full of typos and mispellings. For instance, the word "the" will be written twice in a row, or the word "nit" instead of "not." It makes me wonder if the translation is bad also, since I don't have another version to compare it to.

Great book but don't buy this edition!

Siddhartha is a great book. This edition, however, is perhaps the worst edition of any book that I have ever--ever--seen published. The number of typos, grammatical mistakes, syntax errors, and other errors is astounding. The publishing house, Simon & Brown, should be embarrassed and ashamed.

I like this book, but wish it had more design choices. The instructions for making patterns are great, but not really beginner material. The projects tend to be repetitive, but I think the kids I work with will like some of them.

I purchased this book with the idea to possible to use to teach a children's sewing class. It's a wonderful book for a beginner. It teaches them about fabrics, needles, finishing, etc. I like that it has 17 different projects, so the same book can be used many times without having to continue to purchase different patterns. A great savings. Well worth the cost of the book. I'll be having it on my list of supplies for the class. And teaching multiple projects from this book.

This book is, however, written primarily for the architect. Most builders, we fancy, are already pretty well posted on the subject of the hardware which they are called upon to use in the construction and finish of a house; but our experience has led us to believe that architects, as a rule, seldom go any deeper into the subject than is necessary to decide whether knobs shall be of one material or another, or whether some particular pattern of sash-fast will be satisfactory to the owner. It is needless to say that a more extended acquaintance with the subject would do no one any harm, and might even be conducive to much good, if only in the way of providing more fittingly for the needs of the client. This work is not intended, however, to be over-critical in its nature, nor necessarily so exhaustive as to embrace all the inventions and arrangements comprised in the general term of builders' hardware, though an attempt has been made to discriminate between what is merely novel and what is really suitable, and so far as possible the best of everything is noticed under the various heads, and an effort made to represent as nearly as possible the conditions and limitations of the builders' hardware market, as well as to show what is valuable for the uses of the architect.

Owing to the large number of airplane engines which have already appeared, the descriptions are necessarily condensed and contain only the important and distinguishing characteristics that are known of each one. Some references are of nothing more than historic interest; however, at the time of going to press, no engine is known to the author to which reference has not been made.

The widely distributed sources of such information are usually inaccessible to the average engineer owing to their international derivation, being in many cases unknown; and when known, extremely cumbersome for reference purposes. The majority of airplane engines have been described in various aeronautical works and periodicals, but often as a basis for a discussion on design. This has been purposely avoided in this work since the subject will be very thoroughly treated in subsequent volumes.

Much repetition of experiment on identical types or details occurs through lack of knowledge in regard to the efforts of other workers on similar lines, and results in a waste of inventive skill which might otherwise be turned to more constructive ends. This work will be justified if it in any way should direct engine development along useful lines, and assist in avoiding methods that have long since proved unsound.

The author cannot, of course, be held responsible in all cases for the reliability of the sources of the information used, and it is inevitable that some types, particularly those experimented with more or less privately, have been left unmentioned.

A very interesting book!

This is a very good reprint of a book from 1921. It is well illustrated and contains information on many aircraft engines I have never read about anywhere else. I'm happy this title has been reprinted, as an original edition would be expensive. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in vintage aviation.

Very good history, but has some technical issues

This book was published around 1891. It is a pretty good treatment on the folks who helped bring us the telegraph.

I did find some inaccuracies though. For instance, the author wrote that the speed of light is 288,000 miles per second. This is, of course, false - it is 288,000 kilometers per second.

Unfortunately, I only downloaded this book believing it to be a Western with a bit of Historical Facts thrown in. I was utterly fooled. This book is a very detailed history of the Telegraph, it's inventors, it's uses, and anyone who had a hand in its development. I would only recommend this book to anyone who truly wishes to know about the Telegraph' s place in History. Otherwise, it is rather dry book of facts.

Visiting a flower garden in a magic ancient kingdom

"Please, make me the gardener of your flower garden", a lover asks his beloved. He calls himself a servant and his beloved the queen. He dreams to serve her idle days. He wants to keep fresh the grassy path where she walks in the morning; he wants her feet to be greeted with praise at every step by the flowers.
And what he wants for his reward? He asks to be allowed to hold her little fists like tender lotus-buds and slip flower chains over her wrists; to tinge the soles of her feet with the red juice of flower petals and kiss away the speck of dust that may chance to linger there.
This is the way Rabindranath Tagore, the greatest Indian poet of all times, introduce us to this enchanted collection of poems, poems that touch the most profound strings of our hearts. His poems tell us about love and life - and they are rich with the description of nature and beauty. Anybody that loves or has loved cannot remain indifferent to his poems. Some readers "have smiles, sweet and simple, and some a sly twinkle in their eyes. Some have tears that well up in the daylight, and others tears that are hidden in the gloom." But we all have need for him, the poet, who is "ever as young or as old as the youngest and the oldest of the village".
His poems tell us of impossible love - like the love of the free bird and the cage bird: "Their love is intense with longing, but they never can fly wing to wing. Through the bars of the cage they look, and vain is their wish to know each other. They flutter their wings in yearning, and sing, 'Come closer, my love!' The free bird cries, 'It cannot be, I fear the closed doors of the cage.' The cage bird whispers, 'Alas, my wings are powerless and dead.' "
His poems tell us of secret love: "The young traveler came along the road in the rosy mist of the morning. He stopped before my door and asked me with an eager cry, 'Where is she?' For very shame I could not say, 'She is I, young traveler, she is I.' "
His poems tell us of lovers' emotion: "When my love comes and sits by my side, when my body trembles and my eyelids droop, the night darkens, the wind blows out the lamp, and the clouds draw veils over the stars. It is the jewel at my own breast that shines and gives light. I do not know how to hide it."
His poems tell us of the need for love confidence: "Do not keep to yourself the secret of your heart, my friend! Say it to me, only to me, in secret. You who smile so gently, softly whisper, my heart will hear it, not my ears."
His poems tell us of a love story: "Hands cling to hands and eyes linger on eyes: thus begins the record of our hearts. It is the moonlit night of March; the sweet smell of henna is in the air; my flute lies on the earth neglected and your garland of flowers is unfinished. This love between you and me is simple as a song."
His poems tell us of lovers departing: "An unbelieving smile flits on your eyes when I come to you to take my leave. I have done it so often that you think I will soon return. To tell you the truth I have the same doubt in my mind. For the spring days come again time after time; the full moon takes leave and comes on another visit, the flowers come again and blush upon their branches year after year, and it is likely that I take my leave only to come to you again. But keep the illusion awhile; do not send it away with ungentle haste. When I say I leave you for all time, accept it as true, and let a mist of tears for one moment deepen the dark rim of your eyes. Then smile as archly as you like when I come again."

Pure romance for lovers.....

Oh, how I love this book. I stumbled upon a first edition in my university's library, dusty from years of sitting unread (so sad). I read the first several pages, began to swoon, and had to sit down right there to read more. This is a book to read to your lover before making love. A book to woo her heart with!!! Highly recommended for the romantically hearted.

Poems to be read in Calm

I liked to the book but can not read it for passing the free time. Each of the poem needs attention. It is worth reading in early morning when one is alone without a disturbance by anybody. I have reserved this book for reading in such occasions. Last I read it, in a garden on week end walk. I am resume it again on next such opportunity.
