Here they are, my fifty Men and Women Authors, arranged alphabetically, from Ade (George) to Zangwill (Israel). If, reader, you find some of your favourites omitted, please remember that there was a former book called Authors and I. This new volume, most of which was written in America, is named, naturally, More Authors and I. For I was allowed to acquire the habit of writing these studies, week by week, for The Christian Science Monitor, and as, Mr. Frederick Dixon, then Editor of that excellent journal, liked them, and after Authors and I was published said encouragingly, Carry on, I continued to write about the authors to whom I reacted, for some reason or another, at the moment, even such far-away figures as George Eliot and Herbert Spencer. And I am doing it still. For authors (and their vicissitudes) are many and persistent, and new ways of regarding them open unceasingly, like new dawns.

About the Author
Otto Heller was born in 1863 in the province of Saxony, Germany. After initial aspirations to be an actor, Heller attended the University of Prague, followed by the universities of Munich, Vienna, and Berlin. He came to the United States in 1883 as a tutor and secured the post of instructor in Greek at LaSalle College in Philadelphia in 1887. After receiving his doctor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1890, he taught briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a professor of German language and literature at Washington University in 1892. In 1914, Heller was made professor of modern European literature in addition to his original professorship, and in 1923 he became the first dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, a post he held until he became dean emeritus in 1937. Heller was married to Jean S. Blair Heller. He was an active and well respected critic of literature as well as being a writer himself. His publications include “Henrik Ibsen, Play and Problems,” “Studies in Modern Literature,” “Prophets of Dissent,” and many others. Otto Heller died July 29, 1941.

Fantastic Introduction to Great Thinkers

This is a first class introduction to the thought of Maeterlinck, Strindberg, Nietzsche and Tolstoy. They were indeed prophets of dissent. I would recommend this book.

Nothing in it as advertised. Completely different work inside. No quality control, no oversight; not all from the publisher like that. I have another title that was correct. Not this one though.
