Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989) has been called one of the great shapers of popular culture and the modern imagination. Among her more famous works are The Scapegoat, Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, and the short story "The Birds," all of which were subsequently made into films—the latter three directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

This gothic is a classic with good reason

JAMAICA INN has been on my "To Be Read" list for many years, so when I found an inexpensive paperback copy, it seemed like fate. Every bit as suspenseful as REBECCA but with a more engaging heroine, it kept me on the edge of my seat almost from the beginning.

Mary Yellan's mother dies, leaving her alone with a farm and no one to help her run it. (Apparently, in 19th century England, it was unthinkable that a 23-year-old woman should simply hire some help and keep the farm.) She sells up and goes to live in a distant county with an aunt she hasn't seen for ten years, but whom she remembers as pretty and vivacious. The aunt Patience she finds, however, is much changed. Now married to an abusive, drunken tyrant, Patience has relinquished her former self and become a cringing, wheedling shadow to her brutal husband. The couple reside at Jamaica Inn, an infamous establishment that respectable travelers have long abandoned.

The situation deteriorates further when inquisitive Mary discovers her uncle is involved in illegal dealings that include murder. Horrified, she stays at Jamaica Inn only for the sake of her aunt, whom she intends to rescue. She's befriended by the sympathetic vicar of a neighboring parish, and by her uncle's handsome brother, Jem, to whom she feels oddly drawn, despite his questionable livelihood as a horse thief.

In true Gothic style, the story hovers on the edges of believability. It doesn't pay to think too much on any one point. Mary displays the obligatory intelligence, pluck and curiosity of the gothic heroine, yet loses her courage and/or her smarts at just the points where her hesitation advances the plot. The villains of the story are pure evil without clear motivations. Jem is the most realistically drawn character.

But they don't write like Daphne DuMaurier anymore. Her richly descriptive style sets you squarely down in the midst of the Cornish moors, makes you see the stark granite rocks, feel the heavy air closing around you. Her pacing is nearly perfect, dragging only in one or two spots where I think she falters in her effort to prolong suspense. The story moves along so briskly that you're almost hypnotized into not noticing the plot's weaknesses. It certainly isn't hard to shuffle them to the back of your mind.

JAMAICA INN is well worth the read, especially if you're feeling a bit weary of "flavor-of-the-month" fiction. In particular, I found Ms. DuMaurier's portrayal of the local squire as a kind-hearted, blustering dullard interesting. I wonder if that was a reflection of current (1936) British attitudes toward the gentry. In a similar vein, the vicar's thoughts on religion must have been provocative at the time.

My friend suggested that I read this book. I wasn't counting on it being anything special but wanted to read it to please my friend. I read the book...........WOW! I was so transfixed, my mind was constantly buzzing with anxcity for Mary, fear of Joss and wonder for the next page. These are just a few of words that describe Jamaica Inn: thrilling, unpredictable, fantastic, drastic, fast, flowing, tense, obscene, moving, amazing, open, striking, descriptive, startling, action, exciting, horriffic, pursuing, dramatic, different, changing and enticing.

In Jamaca Inn you can live with the characters, you are part of the book, and you feel for the characters. The book changes mood so easily. A must read.

Not the best DuMaurier but enjoyable nonetheless

Even if it is not as good as Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, or The Scapegoat (but better than the House on the Strand), it is still a page turner, vivid and descriptive and, in the best DuMaurier tradition, very very dark. That said, my rating would actually be closer to 3 1/2 stars.
Mary Yellan is an appealingly scrappy heroine, if somewhat prone to foolhardy actions. I liked that she had guts and that she could be honest about her feelings about a man she had no business loving. Another plus for this book: I bought her falling in love with the roguish horse thief Jem Merlyn. I myself found him sexy (wish there had been more of him in the book). Their chemistry was a nice reflection of the less benign pairing of Mary's poor Aunt Patience and the brutish Joss Merlyn. Perhaps my favorite line because it spoke volumes in few words is "Now Mary understood why she hated her uncle." Or something to that effect.
DuMaurier goes a little overboard in the description of the moor and the tors, although I admit it is necessary to establish the setting. A big reason I do love DuMaurier books is the strong sense of place and time. I suppose that this particular setting was not as interesting as - say - the estate in Rebecca. I knew so because my eye would dart down the page and the next for quotation marks in the hopes that a conversation would break up the lengthy descriptions.
In short one could do a lot worse than this book in the general realm of fiction but as far as DuMaurier fiction is concerned, one could do somewhat better.

Lawrence Beesley (1877-1967), was an English teacher, journalist and author who was a survivor of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. One of the survivors of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912, Beesley wrote a successful book about his experience, The Loss of the S. S. Titanic: Its Story and its Lessons (June, 1912), published just nine weeks after the disaster. For her time, Titanic was unsurpassed in luxury and opulence. Although she was technologically advanced for the period, on the night of 14 April/15 April 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, with great loss of life.

About the Author
Lawrence Beesley was a science teacher, journalist, Titanic survivor, and author of the successful book, The Loss of the S.S. Titanic, based on his experience that harrowing night. A second class passenger, Beesley had been in his cabin reading when the collision occurred, and through a chance of fate happened to be on A-deck when men were allowed to board the lifeboats. After the sinking, Beesley returned to England and resumed his career in education. Lawrence Beesley died on February 14, 1967, at the age of 89.

This is a tale told by a survivor of the S.S. Titanic. It was published just after the Titanic's sinking in 1912. Insisde are the authors true account of the disaster with six real photos of the vessels journey. The story will give you goosebumps down your spine and allow you to expierience the tragedy yourself. This book cannot begin to compare to the other stories of the Titanic. It's power comes from a first hand account that provides more information than a fact book can tell you.

I got this book for kindle so could read wherever I go . Keeping in mind that it was written shortly after Titanic Sank by a survivor of the tragedy. It is a very good read and is hard to put down. It makes me feel very much like a witness to what was happening. I will be reading it to my son who is very curious as to how things were on Titanic especially as it sank from a survivors point of veiw.

Just finished reading this book. It was very interesting and I felt it was more accurate to what really happened during the last days and hours of the accident. It was free download, but would have been worth buying.

Very insightful introduction from the 1912 edition

E. de Selincourt's 1912 introduction is very insightful, and there's a useful glossary and critical notes in the back, which, unfortunately, make them cumbersome to access. The complete, original text is included, however, all in one book, making this a very worthwhile reference.

About the Author

Stephen Asbury is the author of five books for Routledge on safety and risk management, and an HSE consultant and instructor with over 30 years of experience. Awarded the IOSH President's Distinguished Service Award in 2010, Stephen is the HSE Technical Discipline Manager for PetroSkills, and Course Director for their safety and HSE management training programs. He is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner (CFIOSH), a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), and a Professional Member Emeritus of the American Society of Safety Engineers. Stephen's risk management experience was gained working in organizations, in consultancy, and in the London insurance market in >60 countries on six continents. He was the longest-serving member of the IOSH Council of Management from 1998-2013. In addition to his books, Stephen is the author of ~40 technical papers and articles. He was awarded an MBA with Distinction (Leicester, 1995), and presently completing his PhD (London, 2016). His first qualification was in law.

This is the second edition of a very successful book which first appeared in 2006. I said then that it was a most welcome addition to the library of any manager active in this field and ought to be the standard work in HSEQ auditing; this second edition only confirms me in this opinion.
A thriving and constantly improving HSEQ culture depends on those in control questioning its condition, measuring its successes and failures and defining routes towards development. Much in the way that a financial audit determines the monetary health of a management system, HSEQ audits test these elements of performance. Some audit systems are one-size-fits-all prescriptions, which, although successful in many applications, cannot be said to succeed in all, simply because management structures vary so much. Indeed, earlier audit systems tended to give a false sense of security precisely because there was a fundamental mismatch between the management system under scrutiny and the audit system chosen. Hence Stephen Asbury’s approach to letting the management structure determine the what and how of auditing, and that is its major strength.
‘Risk’ is defined herein as the scale of any type of impact on an organisation’s objectives, i.e. very widely. The purpose of this book is therefore to instruct the reader in how to focus on especial classes of risk, how best to interrogate the management system responsible for that aspect, and what to make of the outcome(s).
The book comprises 10 main chapters plus 5 appendices. The novice auditor and senior general manager or director would be well advised to simply start at the beginning and wade in, for there is much to be gained from Asbury’s understanding of the current business environment and how the structure and control functions of an organisation operate. If you’re familiar with modern management studies, then you might skip the first two chapters, but there are plenty of inset boxes with nuggets of good sense and advice that you won’t want to miss. The crux of the matter starts in the next section, where it is explained why, how and by whom and auditing culture comes about in an organisation. This leads into a discussion of the interactions between auditor and those individuals who control the aspects of management under scrutiny. This is important if the audit process is to elicit the best and most accurate data on which future strategy can be confidently based.
The “Audit Adventure” is the author’s term for the thought processes around the dynamics used by auditors. This steers auditors through the major steps of the audit. Since an audit is a project like any other, it comprises a series of inter-related activities with a timescale, budget and resource allocation, plus clearly understood objectives. The remainder of the main sections of the book detail the principles and practices of this audit adventure.
If you have been appointed as lead auditor, chapters 6 – 10 will lead you by the hand, telling you how to approach the tasks involved, how to get the best from your team, and to prepare and execute the best programme you can. All the important aspects of this vital process are dealt with expertly, and with good humour. Good preparation is, naturally, vital for a potentially complex project such as an audit. The audit team and especially the lead auditor must understand what is expected of them, the audit processes they will use and how the deliverables agreed will be uncovered. As Asbury says, “the key to a successful audit is a thoroughly prepared audit team”. Once the groundwork has been laid, the audit team will, hopefully, have unearthed a representative sample of significant risks for inclusion in the audit work plan. The actual conduct of the audit is, quite properly, the major section of this book and the author explains in some detail the variables inherent in these processes, how difficulties can be minimised and focus retained. It’s all most helpful, with case studies, tips and pithy asides to guide the reader towards a deeper understanding. Of greatest use to the auditee will be the formal report and perhaps a presentation giving the conclusions of the audit. Where immediate risks or major non-conformancies have been uncovered, the lead auditor needs to be prepared to help in arriving at workable solutions. This is all part and parcel of the audit process. All these aspects are covered in enough detail to let the prospective lead auditor understand what is required, and conversely what a director of an auditee company can and should expect.
The graphic design is superb with inset case studies to illustrate important points and tips garnered from the author’s personal experience, Special mention must be made of Paul Richardson’s cartoons. Auditing may not be the ‘sexiest’ topic for humour, but these really do work well and don’t detract from the seriousness of the subject.
There is so much to enjoy and admire in this book. The introductory chapters are as good a summary of the nature of business risk as one can have without straying into magnum opus territory for management studies undergraduates. That this is achieved without recourse to ‘management speak’ is quite remarkable. The writing style throughout is accessible and the layout leads the eye to the salient matters of each topic. There are, in addition to the main text, five main appendices plus lots of extras, not the least of which is the useful website supported by the publisher at: [...] There is also a good index, which makes life a lot easier.
Auditing ‘how-to’ guides tend not to be the most thrilling reads. One reads them because one wants to understand the process or to pass an exam. This one, however, actively draws the reader into an understanding of how important these activities are to the health of an organisation so that one appreciates that without such processes, success or failure would be pretty much left to chance. In today’s business environment, no senior manager should be content with that. This book will tell you how to find out what could go wrong and how to address such challenges. This second edition remains the ‘go to’ handbook for those who aspire to drive a prosperous and thriving business and I highly recommend it.

In 2007, I wrote a review on the first edition of this book. That was an excellent read, and now I’m able to tell you about this new edition. The ideas of the first book have been extended, and there are many more tips and ideas, and much better illustrations. I have worked in risk management for many years, but this book brought a whole new perspective to the role, importance and benefits of management system auditing. Asbury's approach is very well expressed, and is supported throughout by dozens and dozens of case studies and examples from his years’ of auditing experience. At the back of the book is a selection of feedback from Asbury’s auditor training courses – it seems he is as good live as he is in his writing. The main themes from the book emerge as 90 'A' factors in an Appendix – these alone are worth the price of the book. This book will be immeasurably useful to aspiring, novice and experienced auditors alike. And to managers perhaps about to be audited. As I said of the first edition, I cannot praise this new edition too highly - it deserves to remain the standard work in this area.

In addition to his teaching at DePauw, Dr. Hershberger is Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and a Tenzer University Professor in Instructional Technology. I come to this stage of the process with much more confidence and resolve because I have this great book to consult If I should get stuck somewhere.

There are many English translations of the work of the Alexandrian Greek poet C.P. Cavafy (1863−1933), and the coincidence of two recent translations, one much discussed and one more obscure, illustrates why.

Famous for his poems of erotic longing and regret, Cavafy writes about the Greek past as if it were a personal memory, as indeed it was for he made it so. We see this in his poems about Julian (Roman emperor, born in 361 BC in Constantinople, the half-brother of Constantine the Great). Called The Apostate, Julian, raised a Christian, converted and cracked down on the paganism of contemporary Christians in Antioch. As historian Glenn Bowersock has written in his indispensable From Gibbon to Auden: Essays on the Classical Tradition (Oxford, 240 pages, $45), Antioch "with its traditional style of life was the kind of city in which he longed to live"--for in his own day, homosexuality remained a scandal and a crime.

Even with Bowersock's help, reading Cavafy is a personal thing. Take the new translations by Daniel Mendelsohn in two volumes: C. P. Cavafy: Collected Poems (Knopf, 547 pages, $35) and C. P. Cavafy: The Unfinished Poems (Knopf 119 pages $30). Mendelsohn attempts to render the complex stylistic mix of the original, and, within the parameters set by English, may be felt to do so. "Julian and the Antiochenes" opens:

"Was it ever possible for them to give up / their beautiful way of life; the rich array / of their daily entertainments; their glorious / theatre where was born a union of Art / and the erotic predilections of the flesh!"

Compare this to the translation by Alan L. Boegehold in Cavafy: 166 Poems (Axios Press, 240 pages, $18):

"Was it possible ever for them to disown / their beautiful life, their mix / of daily entertainments / their luminous / theatre where Art joined / the erotic tendencies of flesh?" Boegehold's versions startle one with a tough lyric fierceness as well as wisdom; his Cavafy is indeed "something precious and real."

Through a mixture of Latinate and Germanic−root words, both translators attempt the rich diction of the original Greek. Mendelsohn's longer line allows the stanza to breath a little easier in keeping with the luxurious topic. Behind the difference, however, is interpretation. Reading Cavafy in these translations is profoundly personal and ultimately rewarding. David J. Peterson began creating languages in 2000, received his MA in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego, in 2005, and cofounded the Language Creation Society in 2007. He has created languages for HBO’s Game of Thrones, Syfy’s Defiance and Dominion, the CW’s Star-Crossed, and Thor: The Dark World. He is also the author of Living Language Dothraki.

When I was a kid, the original Star Wars trilogy had just completed its initial run in theaters, and Star Wars was everywhere. I had a toy sand skimmer (which I broke), a toy TIE fighter (which I also broke), and a read-along Return of the Jedi picture book with accompanying record which would play the sound of a ship’s blaster when you were supposed to turn the page. (If you’re too young to be familiar with record players as anything other than “vinyl,” type “Pac-Man record read along” into YouTube to familiarize yourself with the concept. That was my childhood.)

In short, aside from He-Man, Star Wars was pretty much the thing if you were a child of four in 1985. At that age, when I watched movies, I didn’t really pay careful attention to the dialogue, and wasn’t able to follow stories that well. Consequently when the Star Wars trilogy was rereleased in 1995, I rewatched it eagerly. Once I got to Return of the Jedi, I was struck by what I thought was a particularly bizarre scene. In the beginning of the movie, Princess Leia, disguised as a bounty hunter, infiltrates Jabba the Hutt’s palace in order to rescue Han Solo. She pretends to have captured Chewbacca, and engages Jabba to negotiate a price for handing him over. In doing so, Leia pretends to speak (or evidently does speak, via some sort of voice modification device) a language Jabba doesn’t. He employs the recently acquired C-3PO as an intermediary. As near as I can tell, this is how the exchange goes (transcription is my own; accent marks indicate where the main stress is):

LEIA: Yaté. Yaté. Yotó. (SUBTITLE: “I have come for the bounty on this Wookiee.”)

C-3PO relays this message and Jabba says he’ll offer 25,000 for Chewie.

LEIA: Yotó. Yotó. (SUBTITLE: “50,000, no less.”)

C-3PO relays this message and Jabba asks why he should pay so much.

LEIA: Eí yóto.

The above isn’t subtitled, but Leia pulls out a bomb and activates it.

C-3PO: Because he’s holding a thermal detonator!

Jabba is impressed by this and offers 35,000.

LEIA: Yató cha.

I want you to remember that I was in seventh or eighth grade at the time that I was rewatching this. I was not a “language” guy at that point by any stretch of the imagination. I never dreamed that a human could invent a language, and even if I had, I probably wouldn’t have been able to come up with a good reason for one to do so. Furthermore, up to that point, I’d never studied a second language, and the prospect filled me with dread (I had enough trouble understanding my Spanish-speaking relatives who always spoke too fast for me).

But even so, I knew something was wrong here. How on earth does Leia say the same thing twice and have it mean something different the second time? Even if we take C-3PO for an unreliable translator (he is quite loquacious, after all), that applies only to the last two phrases. How could one expect to have an unreliable subtitle? Subtitles are supposed to lie outside the world of the film. If you can’t rely on a subtitle provided by the film’s creators, how can you rely on anything?

In trying to resolve this conflict, it occurred to me that the only plausible explanation for this aberrant phenomenon is that the language itself was correct, but worked differently from all other human languages. In our languages (take English, for example), a word’s meaning can be affected by the context it’s in, but if you control for context, the word will always mean the same thing. Thus, if you’re telling a story about your dog, and you use the word “dog” several times throughout the story, it will still refer to a fur-covered animal that barks and covets nothing so highly as table scraps. This is fairly standard and uncontroversial.

What would happen if a language didn’t do that, though?

Take, for example, the word I have transcribed as yotó above. What if it changed its meaning over the duration of a discourse? Naturally, one would have to define a discourse, but I think it’s fair to consider this conversation featuring Leia, Jabba, and C-3PO a single discourse, so we can leave that concern aside for the moment. What if the word yotó has several definitions? Specifically, what if the first time it’s used in a conversation it means “this wookiee”; the second time it’s used it means “50,000”; and the third time it’s used it means “no less” (or the rough equivalent of those)? The same, then, applies for all other words in the language. That would resolve the ambiguity. How could one possibly use such a language? Well, they are all aliens (Star Wars, recall, takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away). Maybe they’re just better at this stuff than humans. Why not?

This was where my brain went while rewatching Return of the Jedi for the first time. At some future date I may have shared this with a friend, but if I did, the response was likely an eyeroll. This quirk was just an unimportant detail in an otherwise fantastic movie. Why bother about it?

And so that’s pretty much where my thought experiment died. I didn’t take it any further, and no one was really interested, so I didn’t think about it again until college.

But that, of course, was a different era—a pre-internet era. Who does a teenager have to share news with other than their family, friends, and teachers? Who do they come in contact with? In 1995, that’s pretty much only the people who live near you and with whom you interact on a daily basis. How would you ever get ahold of anyone else? How would I have known that someone in the Bay Area, let’s say—less than five hundred miles away—had the same idea I’d had and also found that exchange interesting? In 1995, there was no way.

Then the internet happened.

Yes, the internet had been around for a while in 1995, but it wasn’t a thing that just anyone could have access to. America Online changed all that. Pretty soon it became a thing to race home from school and go into a chatroom with a bunch of random people to talk about . . . nothing. And that was how we entertained ourselves—for hours. What a world, where you could chat with someone who lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, about how Soundgarden rules!

As it turns out, though, I wasn’t the only person to pick up on this. Another conlanger I’d later meet at the First Language Creation Conference, Matt Haupt, asked exactly the same question, and devoted a blog post to deconstructing that scene specifically. And we weren’t the only ones. The Ubese language has its own entry on the Wookieepedia (yes, that’s a thing) where contributors have written up an entire backstory for the language that is, first of all, not a full language, and, ultimately, poorly constructed and not worthy of serious consideration.

So let me bring back David Benioff and Dan Weiss’s question to me on the night of the Game of Thrones premiere. If the actors speaking Dothraki or High Valyrian or Castithan or whatever make a mistake, who would know but the creator? Who would care? The truth is probably one in a thousand people will notice, and of those who do, maybe a quarter will care. In the 1980s that amounts to nothing. In the new millennium, though, one quarter of 0.001 percent can constitute a significant minority on Twitter. Or on Tumblr. Or Facebook. Or Reddit. Or on whatever other social media service is currently taking the internet by storm. To take a recent (at the time of writing) example, there was Frozen fan fiction and fan art circulating the internet before the movie had even premiered—and when it did premiere, it took a matter of hours for everyone to learn that Kristoff’s boots weren’t properly fastened, and that this was a big deal as it was disrespectful to the Sami people and their culture.

One of the most significant things about our new interconnected world is that the internet can amplify a minority voice exponentially. Yes, few people, comparatively speaking, will care if an actor makes a mistake with their conlang lines. But thanks to the internet, those few people will find each other, and when they do, they’ll be capable of making a big noise. Every single aspect of every single production on the big and small screen is analyzed and reanalyzed the world over—and in real time. Every level of every production is being held to a higher standard, and audiences are growing savvier by the day. Language—created or otherwise—is no exception. In order to meet the heightened expectations of audiences everywhere, we have to raise the bar for languages created for any purpose. After all, if we don’t, we’ll hear about it.

Sudoku Too Easy For You? Try Conlangs.

Have you ever wanted to invent your own language? No, neither have I. But if you love to learn about language and languages, The Art of Language Invention might put a different spin on the way you look at the subject.

David Peterson explains in scholarly detail just what goes into inventing a language. He describes the people who invent languages for fun, and they are an enthusiastically geeky bunch. They strictly apply the rules of language, as we know them, to constructed languages (conlangs). They don't necessarily expect or want people to speak these new languages, the way Zamenhof wanted Esperanto to bring people together. For most of the conlangers, it's a cerebral exercise, like a game of chess or a SimCity community. There is even a small market for invented languages for TV and movie stories.

Peterson's introduction and first chapter takes you into this world, but after that, it's a college level linguistics course, explaining how grammar and orthography, etc. work and how to apply it all to invented languages. This was a little deeper than I wanted to go, but the case studies that he sprinkles throughout describing how he solved various linguistic problems in creating languages, were quite interesting.

He finishes up with a quick chapter on how to get involved in the conlang community and the job prospects for such skills (dim).

I got more then I bargained for with this book

I got more then I bargained for with this book. While I have learned how Mr. Peterson wrote the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones; I have also learned a lot more about how everyone can read and use the same word in many different contexts. In addition, that there are so many ways to use your vocal range to produce a variety of different pronunciations and sounds. Which if you are a singer or an actor, I am sure you already know how to do the vocal exercises.

Yes, I agree that this book does read like a text book but a very intriguing and informative book. I did not think I would like reading this book as much as I did. Also, the Case Studies that were featured in this book I found to be interesting and like added bonuses. Geared with this additional knowledge, I will now be watching movies, television shows, and books with more of a critical eye on the language used.

A Lighthouse and Neon Sign...

This book is amazing! I have been world building for sometime now with the intent of creating several languages that will develop within it. While I had what I thought were the fundamentals to get me started this book is the lighthouse indicating I was soon going to crash, but also is showing me the direction I should be headed (imagine a large neon arrow posted next to the lighthouse).

This is spectacular and I cannot wait to finish my first reading and begin my second (this time with notetaking)!

Equiripple, Least Square, Window techniques and Parks-McClellan Algorithm; to verify the improved accuracy in terms of transition width and reduced side lobes.

It has been the aim of the author to prepare a book for all who are interested in gas engines - students, draughtsmen, engineers, as well as the men who operate gas engines of any kind, and wish to become better acquainted with the theory and the why of many things.

The book should be of special interest to the technical student, and was, in fact, first prepared for the engineering classes at the Michigan Agricultural College, since no suitable text-book could be found.

The reading-matter throughout has been arranged carefully and with a definite object in view. The large number of figures illustrating the text have been made as simple as possible. It has also been the aim of the author to make the treatment dear and concise, and for this reason every paragraph should be studied - not merely read over.

It is hoped that this book will enable every earnest student to acquire a foundation upon which he may eventually build a broad and comprehensive knowledge of the subject.

Don't expect a complete book

There are several parts in this book, both text and equations that are not readable or make no sense because it looks like the book was ran through a OCR program to make it available on Kindle but the resulting text did not convert correctly. This book doesn't seem like it has ever been proof read, hardly worth the 99 cents. However there are very good references that are readable.
