This book: Alexander's Ready Reference for Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, was written by my Great Grandfather, Solomon Augustus Alexander, in 1888 when he was 57 years old. It was taken from a collection of his notes and experiences, "for the benefit of those striving to improve their condition in life". He only had 7 years of formal schooling. He joined the Navy when 16 years old serving 3 years; -- a truly remarkable man. Railroad was his life. He invented many useful items among which were: Spring Adjuster, Rest for Locomotive Cross-Heads, Balanced Slide Valves, Hydraulic Lifting Jack, a Car Coupling and a Rotary Steam Engine.
