He was the master...
By Joe Perrone Jr
Ever since being exposed to Edgar Allan Poe in the ninth grade, I've enjoyed being scared out of my wits. This collection is one that I can (and do) read over and over, whenever the mood strikes me. He surely doesn't need my advocacy, but Edgar Allan Poe could use a little respect from present day readers...

Go for the complete works
By Zack Davisson
Edgar Allan Poe is one of America's greatest writers. He is an absolute master of the short story and the poem. A collection of Poe's writings is a welcome addition to any bookshelf. I would not, however, chose this particular collection.
Because all of his works fit handsomely in a single volume, there is no real need to purchase a "selected works" version like this one. There are other "value priced" editions that have everything and you will be better off with one of them. Look for the term "complete works."
Poe's writings do not disappoint, but this presentation of his writings does.

The Art of Horse-Shoeing (Classic Reprint), by William Hunting

Excerpt from The Art of Horse-Shoeing

This little book is written for three classes of readers: for horse-owners who may interest themselves in the subject, for farriers who are open to conviction, and for veterinary students who have to be examined.

The method pursued has been, to first describe the form and action of the foot, next the preparation of the foot for shoeing. Then the form of a shoe is treated of and the details to be observed in making it. The selection of shoes for varieties of feet or for special kinds of work follows, and afterwards the fitting and nailing-on are considered. Other chapters are devoted to roughing, shoeing defective feet, accidents, the use of leathers and pads.

Throughout an endeavour has been made to be as simple and clear as possible in expression, to lay down correct general principles and to point out the technical details, which are essential to good shoeing. On all these points authorities are not agreed, and I trust those who differ from me will pardon any too dogmatic expressions of opinion in these pages.

The illustrations will be of assistance in making clear the text. Some of these are copied from books, some are drawn from models or preparations, and some are diagrammatic. The books I am indebted to are: "Anatomy of the Domestic Animals," by Gamgee and Law; "On the Horse's Foot," by Bracy Clark; Bouley's "Atlas of the Foot," and Goyau's "Marechalerie."

Above all, I am indebted to the late Professor Joseph Gamgee, who first gave me an interest in horse-shoeing and to whose teachings and writings I trace whatever ideas I now possess.

By Randy Aument
Book moved along well. Not very technical, but a good over view of what the author views as good farrier practices and poor farrier practices.

Wireless Telegraphy (Classic Reprint), by C. L. Fortescue

Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy

In this book the author has had in his mind's eye the reader who, possessing a general scientific knowledge, is anxious to know something, not only of the accomplishments of wireless, but also of the means by which they are attained. The subject is necessarily a highly technical one, and the first four chapters are devoted solely to explanations of the electrical phenomena involved. Which explanations it may be added are really little more than statements of facts illustrated where possible by mechanical analogy. The fifth and sixth chapters deal with the application of these principles to wireless apparatus, and from the seventh chapter onwards the book is devoted to a general survey of the uses to which wireless is nowadays put. No forecast of the future has been attempted as at the time of writing the developement is so rapid that it is beyond anyone to foresee the goal to which it is leading.

A short bibliography has been added including most of the better known books on the subject.

Ignoble Displacement: Dispossessed Capital in Neo-Dickensian London, by Stephanie Polsky

We live in a time of great social, political and economic crisis that many date to the collapse of the global banking system in 2008. Many are finding it difficult to contextualise the hardships that have taken place in the years following on from those events. It is difficult to find the answers in our present media landscape, or in a political and intellectual climate that continues to laud capitalism as the winning economic system coming out of both World War II and the end of the Cold War, which has become over the last century synonymous with democracy itself. The irony is that in our times the majority of the world’s people feel disenfranchised by both capitalism and democracy. How did we come to this historical juncture? What can we learn not just from history, but from our cultural artefacts that might tell us how we first came to conduct ourselves within a system of global finance capitalism? This volume proposes that we reinterpret the writings of Charles Dickens to find the antecedents of our present situation with regards to capital, empire and subjectivity.

A powerful analysis of (neo)liberal governance and its systems of dispossession
By Peter Mörtenböck
This book deserves a wide audience. It is tackling such an urgent issue and is written in such an enthralling way that most readers will find it hard to stop reading after the first couple of pages. Bringing together disparate events from a wide range of spatial, cultural and historical contexts, this book embarks on a compelling analysis of the workings of (neo)liberal governance and its systems of dispossession and disentitlement. While most of the chapters revolve around a detailed and close analysis of nineteenth-century domestic economies and the industrializing urban environments these were embedded in, the author offers numerous explicit comparisons between the capitalist exploitation of poverty and labor power in the Dickensian period and our neoliberal age of austerity culture. On a fascinating journey illustrating the politics of dispossession in our times, we are taken from Boris Johnson’s contempt for the 2011 London riots and the narratives of effort and achievement conveyed by the Olympics the following year to a revealing account of Cameron’s Lord Mayor’s Banquet speech in fall 2013 and the Bush Administration’s manipulative “war on terror.” One particularly striking aspect of the book, for me, is the way it highlights the impact of neoliberal ethics (if this is indeed a term that can be applied in this context) on continued double standards pertaining to different classes of citizens. Rich in ideas and well-versed analysis around social, ethnic and geographical divides instituted by the operations of capital and contemporary capitalism, this book offers a wealth of information for readers interested in how a newly arising enterprise culture is rooted in complex historical and class-related trajectories.

A Superb Book by a Superb Aerospace Historian
By Roger D. Launius
This thorough and well-written book gives a detailed but highly readable account of the enormously complex process whereby the Marshall Space Flight Center under the direction of Wernher von Braun developed the launch vehicles used in the Apollo program to send humans to the Moon. Based on exhaustive research and equipped with extensive bibliographic references, this book comes as close to being a definitive history of the Saturn rocket program as is ever likely to appear. Moreover, it is not simply a technical history but covers the decision-making process that lay behind the technological development, making it not just a history of hardware development but also an analysis of technical management and organization. As one reviewer said in "Air University Review" while reviewing the original edition of this book: "This volume is just one of many excellent histories produced by government and contract historians for the NASA History Office....The book is enhanced by many excellent appendixes and charts, and it has a thorough essay on sources and documentation....Author Roger Bilstein...gracefully wends his way through a maze of technical documentation to reveal the important themes of his story; rarely has such a nuts-and-bolts tale been so gracefully told." I can only add my "amen" to that assessment.

The Complete Story Of The Saturn Family
By Robert I. Hedges
This book is the most complete history of the Saturn launch vehicle family available. Author Roger Bilstein wrote this as an official history for NASA in the late 1970s, and it was originally published in 1980. This edition is paperbound and is published by the University Press of Florida. I was tempted to give the book five stars, but ultimately two things lowered it to four. First, the illustrations are quite poor. All are black and white and most are public domain images that are of low quality. Many are taken from much larger sources and compressed so that the legends and details are virtually or completely impossible to discern. There are many better illustrations available, and there is no reason that a modern reprint of this book should have such inferior illustrations, especially when such complex (and difficult to visualize) machinery is being discussed. The second and more minor reason for the loss of a star is due to the extremely annoying use of metric units (newtons, etc.) throughout the book, which was a misdirected Carter administration whim in vogue when this was written. The problem is not with the units themselves, but rather that all the original units the program worked with were English, and after conversion the numbers are extremely cumbersome to digest and work with: as an example I opened the text randomly to page 119 (which deals with F-1 thrust chamber and furnace brazing,) and found this example, which is typical, but not the worst: "the F-1 was designed to burn its propellants at approximately 79000 newtons per square centimeter (1150 pounds per square inch) at the injector face...." Given that virtually all other sources (and all original sources) cite English units, this is a needless complication that should have been revised.

Having noted the negatives, this book has a lot of positives: it has extremely detailed history on all the Saturn program iterations, including the often neglected Saturn 1 and 1B models. It also discusses proposed but unflown Saturn derivatives, and of course the mighty Saturn V. The book presents a background on previous programs and key personnel and developmental and design choices and rationale; the discussion of the pros and cons of cryogenic propellants in various applications is especially well written. Following this the different models of Saturn vehicle are detailed to include all stages, engines, systems, and Instrument Units (which were fairly similar throughout the program.)

There is enormous effort expended to detail the histories of the various stages and the individual histories of the individual rocket engines built. Several missions are examined in great detail, most notably AS-506, which was, of course, Apollo 11. After the discussion of the technical details of the Saturns, Bilstein presents an excellent examination of the logistics of Apollo and the management techniques used to oversee the design, construction, checkout, and launch of the vehicles. The book concludes with a treasure trove of appendices full of technical and other data, which serious space historians will find of enormous assistance.

This is overall a great book, and I recommend it highly to anyone serious about space history. It is not casual reading for most people, but is extremely well detailed, and were it not for the illustration issues (and metric units, to a lesser extent) this book would easily have been awarded five stars.

Textbook account of the buiding & operation of the Saturn...
By Thomas Moody
Being the avid manned spaceflight reader that I am, this book was a gold-mine. The history of not only the Saturn V is covered here, but also the earlier (less powerful) Saturn I and IB as well as the early proposals for other Saturn launch vehicles. Then, if that's not enough, you get stage-by-stage and engine-by-engine technical explanations along with each components' history. Marvelous! I've only been able to find this book at libraries, (unless you want to spend hundred[s] of dollars for collectable editions online) but, if you're an Apollo program or Saturn V afficienado, it's worth looking for. Highly recommended!

Essential dictionary for reading or translating Homer

This dictionary was invaluable while I was translating The Iliad. It is amazingly comprehensive, full of wonderful illustrations that accompany the definitions and includes clear instructions on how to read Homeric verse.

Indispensible Tool for Reading Homer
By Platonistikon
Autenrieth's Homeric Dictionary is an indispensible tool for reading Homer in the original. Because it focuses only on Homeric vocabulary, it is easier to use than standard lexica that include thousands of other words and later, non-Homeric meanings for Homeric words. Illustrations and detailed explanations are supplied for words describing armor and weapons and the like, which is helpful and not offered by most other lexica. Autenrieth is also more convenient than the glossaries found in beginner's texts because it allows the reader to look up words in a separate volume rather than turning to the back of the same book.
The introduction to the text claims that students should be able to read Homer with this dictionary almost twice as fast as they would with a standard lexicon. This may sound somewhat overblown, but in my experience it is true. Anyone reading a considerable amount of Homer would do well to pick up this volume and save themselves some time.
The only unfortunate thing is that this isn't available in hardcover. Why publishers increasingly fail to recognize the value of offering hardbound editions of reference works that are likely to be used often, I just don't understand. Even still, the Homeric Dictionary is worth owning if you plan to spend any serious time with Homer in Greek.

This is good but Cunliffe is the last word.
By Seoigheach
Having used both Autenrieth and Cunliffe, it is easy for me to say that Cunliffe is better. Both books are excellent as far as they go and can be used to interpret the Homeric lexicon. The minor advantages of Autenrieth--and they really are minor--are (1) it is slightly more compact, if space is a premium; (2) it has occasional, schematized illustrations; and (3) by not listing some of the inflected forms it forces you to work harder to reconstruct the dictionary entries. The advantages of Cunliffe are (1) its comprehensiveness in including many of the derived or inflected forms, relieving the relative newcomer of time-consuming recontruction of dictionary forms; and (2) its large, almost overcapacious, citations to many entries: it is sometimes entertaining just to browse the entries. I own both but after I got Cunliffe I never bothered resorting to Autenrieth.

Hence the three stars. This really is worth five stars in terms of accuracy and in providing you with everything you need. But it is overshadowed by its competitor.

Liberated Threads: Black Women, Style, and the Global Politics of Soul (Gender and American Culture), by Tanisha Ford

From the civil rights and Black Power era of the 1960s through antiapartheid activism in the 1980s and beyond, black women have used their clothing, hair, and style not simply as a fashion statement but as a powerful tool of resistance. Whether using stiletto heels as weapons to protect against police attacks or incorporating African-themed designs into everyday wear, these fashion-forward women celebrated their identities and pushed for equality.

In this thought-provoking book, Tanisha C. Ford explores how and why black women in places as far-flung as New York City, Atlanta, London, and Johannesburg incorporated style and beauty culture into their activism. Focusing on the emergence of the "soul style" movement—represented in clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, and more—Liberated Threads shows that black women's fashion choices became galvanizing symbols of gender and political liberation. Drawing from an eclectic archive, Ford offers a new way of studying how black style and Soul Power moved beyond national boundaries, sparking a global fashion phenomenon. Following celebrities, models, college students, and everyday women as they moved through fashion boutiques, beauty salons, and record stores, Ford narrates the fascinating intertwining histories of Black Freedom and fashion.

I Think You're Totally Wrong: A Quarrel, by David Shields, Caleb Powell

Caleb Powell always wanted to become an artist, but he overcommitted to life; his former professor David Shields always wanted to become a human being, but he overcommitted to art. The stay-at-home dad (three young girls) and the workaholic writer (eighteen books) head to the woods to spend four days together in a cabin, arguing life vs. art.

I Think You’re Totally Wrong is an impassioned, funny, probing, fiercely inconclusive, nearly-to-the-death debate. Shields and Powell talk about everything—marriage, family, sports, sex, happiness, drugs, death, betrayal, and (of course) writers and writing—in the name of exploring and debating their central question: the lived life versus the examined life. There are no teachers or students here, no interviewers or interviewees, no masters of the universe—only a chasm of uncertainty, in a dialogue that remains dazzlingly provocative and entertaining from start to finish.

James Franco’s film adaptation of I Think You’re Totally Wrong, starring the authors, premiered in 2015.

Review
“Outrageously entertaining . . . a warm, funny, and charming book that questions not only what it means to live for art, but what it means to live.”—Saul Austerlitz, Boston Globe

"Hugely entertaining."—John Murawski, Raleigh News & Observer

“A daring descent into the ‘chasm of uncertainty.’”—Matt Seidel, Los Angeles Review of Books

“Start reading I Think You’re Totally Wrong, then try to stop; I dare you. It screws with your head in a way you can’t shake off, and it’s moving—weirdly moving. It ruined my work day. I loved it. Shields is opening up new ways to be a writer.”—Walter Kirn

“I Think You’re Totally Wrong helped make sense of the strange rigors of life as I know it—the balancing of art, work, motherhood, along with enough time to have those moments of adventure or inspiration so that the pleasure of art still feels filled with life, a sort of Proust versus Conrad question many writers or artists know. The book’s arc is seamless, deceptive, effective: by its close, the reader feels an antinarrative resolution, a sense that everyone leaves a bit more alive from the exchange.”—Edie Meidav, The Rumpus

“The premise of the book could easily play as straight farce: two self-involved and argumentative men argue with each other about . . . themselves. Often in a hot tub. ('You said you wanted homoerotic tension,' Powell says to Shields. 'Were you hitting on me?') But what unfolds is actually quite gripping, and they’re well aware of the farcical qualities. Not only do we witness personal experiences conscripted into intellectual work; we witness these disclosures getting heard and processed. In the end, the form of the book is more illuminating than any resolution the authors find to their central conflict. Shields and Powell offer a different vision of how the confessional might play out: rather than baring their psychic flesh for the sake of exposure and intimacy (‘You said you wanted homoerotic tension’), they are excavating complexities inside their experiences. . . . Shields and Powell have generated a ‘lived’ creative inquiry with its roots in the conflict between living and creating. ‘Art can serve people,’ Shields declares. ‘Basically, the royal road to salvation, for me, lies through an artist saying very uncompromising things about himself. And through reading that relentless investigation, the reader will understand something surprising about himself.’ This notion of investigation offers an alternative to confession. Its goal isn’t sympathy or forgiveness. Life is not personal. Life is evidence. It’s fodder for argument. To put the ‘I’ to work this way invites a different intimacy—not voyeuristic communion but collaborative inquiry, author and reader facing the same questions from inside their inevitably messy lives.”—Leslie Jamison, The Atlantic

“Provocative . . . entertaining . . . diverting.”—Kurt Rabin, Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star

“The two longtime pals disagree on marriage, religion, sex, politics, happiness, film—and everything else—with passion, insight, and panache.”—Lisa Shea, Elle

“A fascinating reality-show romp of a new book.”—Davis Schneiderman, Huffington Post

"A provocative, two-sided story.”—TimeOut New York

“Impassioned, funny, probing.—BookForum

“Intelligent and erudite.”—Kevin O’Kelly, Christian Science Monitor

“Raw, unflinching honesty. Seemingly no subject is taboo here.”—Philip Eil, Jewish Daily Forward

“A celebrated new book.”—Jewish Journal

“By turns funny, philosophically engaging, and emotionally revealing.”—Doug Childers, Richmond Times-Dispatch

“A worthy and important addition to the genre [book-in-dialogue], this casual conversation pushes readers to rethink fundamental questions about life and art.”—Publishers Weekly

“A stimulating intellectual interaction with lots of heart.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Shields and Powell approach their topics with clarity and wit, they poke and prod, they agree and disagree . . . an often contentious and always intelligent dialogue.”—Mark Levine, Booklist

“How cool is this?”—Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

“A fierce and funny debate about life and art.”—Type Books

“An impassioned, contentious, and ultimately contentious yet entertaining look at age-old debates about the life of the artist.”—Kevin Larimer, Poets & Writers

“I read this book at compulsive speed, thoroughly engaged by the weekend and the argument—its unbuttoned fluency and candor. I’m envious of the sheer loquaciousness of the conversation and its no-holds-barred freedom (of speech). Both Shields and Powell have their own style of eloquence. The Art v. Life theme may have been the essential trigger for the book, but it becomes engrossing on a score of other fronts.” —Jonathan Raban

“There’s a sense that we can actually see David and Caleb talking, even though, obviously, we can’t. It’s like eavesdropping on a riveting debate/conversation, and sometimes one takes one side, sometimes the other. One of the things I love most about the book is the tennis-match-in-slow-motion quality of the arguments, which made me question where I stand on the choices I might have made, and even continue to make.” —Susan Daitch

“This deeply personal book is a success. It’s quite daring in its confessional parts. Confession makes sense only when it costs something, when it’s courting disaster; I found that risk-taking in this book, and it’s bracing.” —Peter Brooks

“Most writers editing a taped conversation would cut all the stuff around the ‘point’—in this case, an argument about life and art—but it’s the way in which the conversation about life and art is entwined with the details of the two men’s lives and personalities that makes I Think You’re Totally Wrong so artful. A fascinating, fantastic book.” —Melanie Thernstrom

“I don’t think there’s anything quite like this book, which is way more authentic than fiction or structured argument. It held my attention from start to finish, the narrative line is strong, the characters are developed in an intriguing way, it made me laugh hard dozens of times, and not necessarily at the jokes. The quarrel never turns into false drama because it doesn’t need to.”—Brian Fawcett

More Powell v. Shields than Life v. Art
By S. McGee
First, a pop quiz. How familiar are you with David Foster Wallace? With the works of David Markson? With Eula Bliss -- NOT On Immunity: An Inoculation or even Notes from No Man's Land: American Essays but The Balloonists? How comfortable do you feel with statements such as, "at some point philosophical ambiguity becomes moral cowardice", or "you haven't learned to wire the investigation through the central intelligence agency of your own sensibility"? If you're cool with all the above, and you love My Dinner with Andre (The Criterion Collection) and Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia, you're an above-average candidate to fall for this book. Otherwise, you may want to hit the pause button, and consider the merits of borrowing it from a library before committing yourself to a purchase decision.

It's an interesting enough book, and reading it is a bit like being a fly on the wall as two guys that you don't know very well -- and aren't altogether sure that you have all that much in common with (in my case) hang out and talk about everything from their wives and kids and families and traumas (Caleb Powell has more stories, as befits the "life" side of the argument, involving everything from a near death experience in his late teens to encounters with transvestites in the South Pacific) to literature. David Shields, Powell's one-time writing instructor, is a much-published and much-lauded writer; Powell, a little published stay-at-home dad to three daughters who earns about a tenth of what Shields does, and Shields isn't averse from occasionally reminding him, as a way to score points and end the debate, that he is successful and Powell isn't.

It's a free-flowing conversation, which rambles and occasionally captures an interesting insight or thought. For instance. at one point Powell challenges Shields' reluctance to engage with those who aren't part of his "club". "Stuff like this makes me wonder if you even want to understand people at 'ground level'," he challenges his erstwhile teacher. He goes on to point out that while many Americans don't read literary works, "they're not all morons." And, he adds, "Why would they read David Shields if David Shields if David Shields doesn't want to hang out with them?"

And there it is, in a nutshell. After finishing this, I emerged feeling that neither of these two writers was someone I found tremendously interesting or engaging. Their ideas were esoteric or proved too elusive; the level of intellectual arrogance on display was breathtaking, at times. Reading through the debate (although "debate" implies a far, far more structured process than what is actually taking place; the discussion of art versus life is more implied than stated and even then makes up only a part of the total dialog) reminded me of a segment of one of Samuel Johnson's "Rambler" essays, in which the 18th century lexicographer and critic wrote of the vast gap that exists between a writer's "public" voice, as it appears in their work, and their personal voice, which often is significantly less impressive. "A transition from an author's book to his conversation," Johnson wrote, "is too often like an entrance into a large city, after a distant prospect." Splendid turrets and magnificent spires give way to "narrow passages" and "despicable cottages".

This was amusing, mildly interesting, but never really more than that. I never felt as if it broke beyond a narrow set of boundaries. Basically, the two authors belong to the same literary "club"; share roughly the same literary tastes (at one point, Powell acknowledges, "I like all these writers you like") and have similar enough backgrounds that their differences are really rather modest. One has been a success in his career as a writer; one has not. Even then, I felt that the idea that Powell has made a deliberate choice in favor of life experience over art to be rather disingenuous. Was that a choice he made, or a choice that he has become comfortable with? What would have happened had his novel been published? Would he have chosen not to follow Shields' path?

The format is intriguing and promises much, but the choice of David Shields and Caleb Powell as the two protagonists made it less intriguing than it could have been. I kept what wondering what might have happened had two writers with radically different life experiences undertaken the same experiment -- and what fireworks might have followed. While the discussions here are of some interest, it didn't leave me pondering any of the questions the duo raise, much less the central one of life versus art. They may feel passionate about it, but Shields seemed to feel the most passion about getting home from the weekend in time for his Skype chat with his college-age daughter, and Powell for his next beer and for a discussion of human evil in Cambodia.

Worth reading if for no other reason then to grapple with its opinions and ideas
By loce_the_wizard
To get to the start of "I Think You're Totally Wrong: A Quarrel" by David Shields and Caleb Powell you have to pass over the opening platitudes from other writer/reviewers. I would recommend skipping this part as these packaged comments do nothing but puff up their author's reputations and create expectations that this book simply does not fulfill. I had to restrain myself from trashing the book as a reaction to this padding by the publisher, a practice that needs to just go the hell away at this point.

So the book itself veers from interesting to intriguing, but it sometimes teeters on tedium as David Shields and Caleb Powell debate and bicker over whether a steadfast dedication to art or life provides the foundation for excellent writing and enduring literature. Both score points, Powell for life and experience, and Shields for art, but neither lands a knockout. Shields often dances about and waits and zips Powell with more eloquence and examples, but Powell rolls through each attack and gets off enough salvos that he keeps Shields on his toes.

There is playful side banter and enough of the quotidian incorporated to keep the book both moving along and grounded. But the constant shifting from topic to topic and the seemingly truncated conversations---while necessary to convert a raw transcript into something of coherent narrative---means much is lost in the process. Consider it like cooking a pot of fresh spinach: you fill the pot and think that there will be too much, but as the spinach cooks down, you realized there is not nearly as much to it as you had expected. That is, in essence, what has happened during the condensing and editing of the four days of audio recordings that form the basis of "I Think You're Totally Wrong: A Quarrel."

By the time I finished, I felt like neither Shields nor Powell would be the kind of fellow I would want to hang with for a winter camping trip, but on the other hand, I would love to talk with each of them over a cup of coffee or a beer. They reveal enough of themselves that sometimes it is impossible not to cringe a bit (TMI!), yet their willingness to keep pushing and let the sorts of things most of us rarely share appear in print says a great deal about their conviction to the project.

I can imagine a series of similar dialogues taking place with different pairing of authors to codify this form of writing as more than a one-off project. Yes, there will be a movie, but whether it helps settle the debate is doubtful.

I leave with one more thought. What if this concept is a false polarity? What if art and life cannot be separated or if either one's importance in creating literature cannot be exalted over the other? What is the third way, the intermingling of reporting, life, experience, and memory into literature (it is a broad word, literature, encompassing many forms) such as the Gonzo writing of the later Hunter S. Thompson or even the compact prose of Ernest Hemingway shows that this debate does not really need settling?

It's worth reading this book if for no other reason then to grapple with its opinions and ideas as you zip through it.

An Argument
By Lynn Ellingwood
Soon to be a movie produced by James Franco, this novel is a quarrel. Two writers, one who is successful and another who isn't yet, go into the woods for four days to use words to debate each other in a way that others will want to read it and buy the book. Like Magical Mystery Tour, the mystery is whether anything will come out of this effort or something miraculous will arise. The two men argue and debate and posture throughout the book and try to make good their points. Interesting stuff and since one taught ESL overseas, I find it even more interesting. I want to jump in and argue too.

Glass (Object Lessons), by John Garrison

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.

Pause and look around: you will see that you are surrounded by glass. It reflects and refracts light through your windows; it encircles a glowing filament above you; it's in a mirror hanging on the wall; it lies shattered in a dented corner of an iPhone-you're drinking water out of a pint glass. Taking up a most common object, rarely considered because assumed to be transparent, John Garrison draws evocative connections between historical depictions of glass and emerging visions that see it as holding a unique promise for new forms of interaction. Grounded in everyday examples, this book offers a series of surprising insights into how we increasingly find ourselves living in a world made of glass.

Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Review
"They are beautiful: elegant paperbacks, the quality kind, with front and back flaps, not quite pocket-sized but easily transportable ... there are 10 so far, and every one a curiosity; not just an object, but a world in and of itself." -- Dinah Lenney and Arne De Boever, Los Angeles Review of Books

"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic ... Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. -- Steven Johnson, best-selling author of How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World

"Glass [...] distills the essence of a substance that offers itself as something to be looked through, giving a shine to its contents, and as something that occupies our view, as something we have to take note of and interact with. [Garrison's] small but deeply satisfying book [...] shuttles us back and forth between the way glass marked the imaginative world of Renaissance plays and poems to the imagined worlds of today's interactive glass surfaces in the guise of iPhones, smart appliances, and smart rooms." -- Julian Yates, Los Angeles Review of Books

"[A] book that can be read in a fascinated hour, but will influence your reading and your looking for the next month." -- Times Literary Supplement

"This brilliant book takes us through the looking glass, allowing us to see an everyday material in a whole new light. Glass, no matter how transparent it may seem, is always coated with many layers of meaning. In this scintillating account, John Garrison shows how the cultural framing of glass has repeatedly opened windows to other worlds, from the microscopic depths to the far reaches of the cosmos, from the imagined futures of science fiction to the bizarro-worlds of our own bathroom mirrors." ―Colin Milburn, Professor of English and Science and Technology Studies, University of California Davis, USA

"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary―even banal―objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you've read a few of these, you'll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: 'I wonder what the story is behind this thing?'"―Steven Johnson, best-selling author of How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World

"The Object Lessons project, edited by game theory legend Ian Bogost and cultural studies academic Christopher Schaberg, commissions short essays and small, beautiful books about everyday objects from shipping containers to toast. The Atlantic hosts a collection of "mini object-lessons", brief essays that take a deeper look at things we generally only glance upon ('Is bread toast only insofar as a human toaster perceives it to be "done?" Is bread toast when it reaches some specific level of nonenzymatic browning?'). More substantive is Bloomsbury's collection of small, gorgeously designed books that delve into their subjects in much more depth." ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

We Live In A World Of Glass - What That Means And Why That Matters
By Karl A. Schmieder
Where are you reading these words? Chances are you're looking at them through a piece of glass.

Now stop for a second and look around you. Are there any glass objects nearby? A window to peer through? A mirror that reflects what you place in front of it? A glass to drink from?

Glass is an everyday object that you probably don't think much about unless the screen on your smart phone is cracked, your window is broken and needs replacing, or you accidentally drop the glass you were drinking from. In this Objects Lesson book glass, John Garrison examines the nature of this ubiquitous and mostly ignored material.

Invented some 3500 years Before Christ in Mesopotania, this mysterious yet often overlooked material has been a part of our lives for a very long time. Garrison draws examples from Renaissance literature and contrasts it with present-day science fiction to demonstrate how we look through glass, imbue it with our desires, and use it as a way of relating to ourselves. Examples are artfully chosen from Shakespeare, Google Glass, Corning's "A Day in Glass," Microsoft's Hololens, Minority Report, Strange Days, and (smile) Star Trek.

As Garrison concludes, "In everyday glass objects, we see reflected the shared human imagination that imbued glass with interactive qualities, whether in lyric poetry, on the showroom floor, or in a science fiction film."

Highly recommended.

Glass: the Magic and the Modern
By Koay
I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. The size is important because, when you can’t put it down, it’ll fit snugly right into your hand.

It’s the marriage of modernity and magic- inherent in glass itself- that I found so compelling in this well-written piece by John Garrison. The beginning of the book focuses on the ubiquitous and almost secretive nature of modern glass; not just on surfaces and screens, but also snaking behind the scenes in the very fiberglass and fiber optics surrounding us in walls, wires, and machines.

The older, more magical sense of glass is revealed to us also. With the chapter dissecting the Freaky Friday type-magic of Google Glass giving us a selective view of “lives of not-so-quiet inspiration” and “the promise of stepping out of our bodies” and seeing literally through others eyes…The unnerving possibilities and probabilities are exposed and I loved the comparison to the movie Strange Days. The future is now, and I find myself more than a little concerned.

Glass as a product, a description, a noun, a metaphor, and a symbol. So much in a tiny package.

Garrison makes this everyday object provocative and wonderfully interesting. His writing is scholarly
By philip Krejcarek
Garrison creates a blending of historic and contemporary themes in GLASS. For example, he compares Roland Barthes’ photograph of his mother as a young girl with Shakespeare’s Sonnet 3, which states, “You are thy mother’s glass and she is thee.”
This book includes such contemporary subjects as Corning’s “A Day Made of Glass,” which imagines the future of interactive glass; Google Glass, which was tested by celebrities and everyday people alike; and Microsoft’s HoloLens, which applied holograms to the real world. He also looks to science fiction films that utilized glass in various forms. These include, “Strange Days,” “Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol” and “Minority Report.”
This book is rich in its research of glass. Garrison makes this everyday object provocative and wonderfully interesting. His writing is scholarly, while at the same time accessible and fun.
