GREAT WAY TO DECIDE IF I WANT TO READ A BOOK!
    By Anee
This review wanted me to run out and buy the book.
Right from the beginning this summary grabbed my attention. I am a Canadian and grew up with men who hunted, and being set in B.C. the scene was very clear.
I loved how the main and secondary characters were listed for me, it was like a play. Then chapter by chapter the plot builds for me but does not give it all away. I really like having a summary and analysis, it really let's me know if I want to spend my time reading the book.
Can't wait for the next book to come out.

    A Very Exciting Page-Turner
    By Jim Sasser
I read the Kindle version. It put me off at first with the Eugene character. When I went back to it, it became a page turner. I could not wait to get back to it. The characters are very believable. The BC setting (I live in WA) was perfect. The descriptions of places and event were very real. I will be reading more of Loreth's books, if my heart can stand it.

    Waves, by Fredric Raichlen

Sitting on the beach on a sunny summer day, we enjoy the steady advance and retreat of the waves. In the water, enthusiastic waders jump and shriek with pleasure when a wave hits them. But where do these waves come from? How are they formed, and why do they break on the shore?

In Waves, Fredric Raichlen traces the evolution of waves, from their generation in the deep ocean to their effects on the coast. He explains, in a way that is readily understandable to nonscientists, both the science of waves themselves and the technology that can be used to protect us against their more extreme forms, including hurricanes and tsunamis. After offering a basic definition of waves and explaining the mechanics of wind-wave generation, Raichlen describes how waves travel, how they shoal (rise), how they break, and how they transform in other ways. He goes on to describe, among other things, the complicated sun-Earth-moon combinations that create astronomical tides (the high and low tides that occur daily and predictably); the effects of waves on the beach, including rip currents and beach erosion, and on harbors and shipping; and the building of breakwaters to protect harbors and bays. He discusses hurricanes, storm surges, and hurricane-generated waves. He offers a brief history of tsunamis, including Sumatra's in 2004 and Japan's in 2011 and explains the mechanisms that generate them (including earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes).

Waves can be little ripples that lap peacefully at the shore or monstrous tsunamis that destroy everything in their paths. Describing the science underlying this astonishing variety, Waves offers a different kind of beach listening.

Very educational about types of sea waves
    By Kent Price
Great little book (5" x 7" x 1" thick) by MIT Press. It has sections about waves, the wind, tides, waves and the shore, extreme waves, and a appendix and glossary of word definitions. The book contains equations, diagrams, and pictures. The book describes earthquake generated waves including the 2011 Japanese tsunami which generated "tidal waves".

One oddity of layout is that a number of pages are black with large white text to emphasize points made in the text. I would have preferred pictures rather than repetition of the text.

All in all, I enjoyed the book.

PS: a great textbook reference is "Wind Waves, their generation and propagation on the ocean surface" by Blair Kinsman, Department of Oceanography, John Hopkins University.

Brings deep knowledge of waves to non technical readers
    By Zoey
A great overview of the causes and consequences of waves. Timely given the recent events around the world including Sandy and the Tsunami in Japan. I must say, I don't understand how the other reviewer found this book lacking. I also bought this book after reading the Wall Street Journal Review and I thought the writing was clear and engaging and the information was presented in a way that non technical readers could easily understand. This is a book that should be on the shelves of anyone living along the coasts, or anyone interested in how and why waves form the way they do.

    Waves
    By Gordon Moog
This fascinating little book tells one everything one could want to know about waves. An easy read since (1) the heavy math is in an appendix and (2) Mr. Raichlen provides us with a wonderful glossary. I wish more authors understood the importance of glossaries and complete indexes. One can only hope.

Airspace Closure and Civil Aviation: A Strategic Resource for Airline Managers, by Steven D. Jaffe

The impact to airlines from airspace closure can be as benign as a two minute extension on an arrival pattern, or as catastrophic as a shoot down from a surface-to-air missile, as the tragic loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over the Ukraine in July 2014 demonstrates. Airspace constraints come in a variety of forms, both man-made and physical, but all result in operational inefficiencies that erode the economic vitality of an airline. Understanding the root causes of these airspace restrictions, developing strategies for mitigating their impact, and anticipating future airspace closures, are critical for the efficient and safe operation of any airline. This book uniquely examines the technological, geographic, regulatory, and political aspects of airspace closure, with a focus on how airlines continue to adapt to overcome these challenges, providing readers with a framework for identifying issues and solutions in a systematic manner. Filled with historical references and contemporary anecdotes, this book serves both as a practical guide and strategic resource for airline managers navigating their 21st century. organizations around some of the lingering 20th century obstacles.

    Review
'In the wake of the shootdown of MH 17 in 2014, anyone involved in commercial aviation planning and operations should read this important book as a foundation for understanding the causes and consequences of airspace closure. The book does a remarkable job in tying together an enormously diverse set of topics - regulatory, technical, political, commercial, security, geographic - in an eminently readable fashion. The fascinating real-world vignettes that introduce each chapter are themselves worth the price of admission for anyone with an interest in international relations, economic geography, or aviation history.' Excerpt from Storage Batteries: The Chemistry and Physics of the Lead Accumulator

    1. Into our present age of power, where we reckon by thousands and tens of thousands of kilowatts, there has come down from a previous era one single form of the galvanic cell which retains sufficient commercial importance to be worth consideration in connection with modern power plants and modern power operation. This is the lead-sulphuric acid accumulator. It was invented and perfected in the heyday of galvanic cells - at a time before the dynamo and the electric motor had any technical importance. In our own laboratory, hidden away in the attic where cast-off things are stored, lie the remains of the big Bunsen cells which were once the source of our heaviest currents and with which the remarkable phenomena of current electricity were shown to classes and in public lectures in those days.

Excellent Reproduction of a Classic Text with Broad Appeal
    By Dr. Philip Johnson
The publisher has done a first class job in reproducing a text first published in 1912. The book is printed on quality paper and beautifully bound, though what the seascapes on the cover have to do with lead-acid batteries is a mystery.

The book itself was written in the pre-quantum mechanics era and benefits from the simplicity of science at that time. The technology has advanced some since then but, apart from recombinant technology used in maintenance-free lead acid batteries, this book is as relevant today as it was when first published. It is also a fine example of how a book should be written if the technology it describes is to appeal to a broader audience than fellow researchers in the field.

It is highly recommended: for collectors, this book is an essential addition and has a place on the shelf between Sir Isaac Newton's "The Principia" and Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time"; for students and engineers, it contains all the fundamental science needed to understand batteries in general without the heavy mathematics; for technical writers, it is a fine example of clear and understandable explanations of scientific processes.

Aerial Interdiction: Air Power and the Land Battle in Three American Wars, by Eduard Mark

This analytical work by Dr. Eduard Mark of the Center for Air Force History examines the practice of air interdiction in three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the war in Southeast Asia. It considers eleven important interdiction campaigns, all of them American or Anglo-American, for only the United States and Great Britain had the resources to conduct interdiction campaigns on a large scale in World War II. Dr. Mark proposes what he considers to be a realistic objective for interdiction: preventing men, equipment, and supplies from reaching the combat area when the enemy needs them and in the quantity he requires. As Mark notes, there has been little intensive scholarship on the subject of interdiction especially when contrasted with the work done on strategic bombardment. In the wake of the Persian Gulf War, the reader will no doubt be impressed by the comparatively low performance of weapons in these pre-Gulf war campaigns. DESERT STORM showed that recent advances in technology had enabled interdiction to reach new levels of effectiveness, especially in night operations. Yet, as the reader soon discovers, interdiction in the pre-Gulf campaigns sometimes profoundly influenced military operations. As is often the case in military history, the effects were often serendipitous-not as planned or anticipated, but present nevertheless. By the middle of the Second World War, aircraft were already demonstrating that they could have a devastating impact upon a military force’s ability to wage war. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, for example, complained bitterly during the North African and Normandy campaigns about air power that, in his memorable words, “pinned my army to the ground” and otherwise denied his forces both supplies and the ability to freely maneuver. The aircraft and weapons that caused the German commander such problems were, by today’s standards, primitive. The accuracy of bombing was calculated in terms of circles with radii of hundreds or even thousands of feet. Bridges took dozens, sometimes hundreds, of sorties to destroy, meaning that a simultaneous taking-down of an enemy’s transportation network was impossible. A single target also required strike packages of hundreds of airplanes. Target “revisiting” because of poor bombing accuracy meant that aircraft loss rates were often alarmingly high. Yet, even with all of these limitations, air attack still had the ability to hinder, limit, and eventually help defeat a robust, well-trained and well-equipped opponent. It is important that this be recognized, just as it is important that we recognize that modern air war, as shown in the Gulf conflict, is very different and more effective, not only from that of 1941-1945, but from the more recent Vietnam era as well. The challenges posed by aerial interdiction from the dust of the Western Desert to the triple canopy of Southeast Asia gave but a hint of how devastating an attacker the airplane would prove in the Gulf War of 1991. There, advanced strike aircraft-some of them stealthy as well-dropped precision munitions with shattering effect against the Iraqi military machine. As shocking as it might seem, revolutionary advances in precision navigation and weapons technology had largely reduced the previous experiences of interdiction to historical anecdote, not historical prediction. Today, in the era of Global Reach-Global Power, the lessons of aerial interdiction through Vietnam are instructive, for no other reason than this: they reveal how far modern airpower has come. This book, by tracing air interdiction from the Western Front through Vietnam, and by examining both its failures and successes, fills an important gap in the history of air power and enables us to appreciate to an even greater degree the profound significance that air power possesses now and for the future.

Excellent Study of Interdiction in WW II, Korea, and Vietnam
    By David W. Bobb
Author Eduard Mark has done a superb job of recounting the strengths and weaknesses of aerial interdiction efforts in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Starting with the Allied invasion of North Africa, Mark examines how the three-tiered system of Allied air operations was developed (primarily through British influence) and how that system remained in effect throughout the succeeding wars. As the author discusses the various operations in World War II, he is not afraid to state that things did not always go well regarding interdiction efforts and on more than one occasion, airmen could not deliver their promised results. At times, this was crucial, as in Sicily when controversial command decisions coupled with non-effective employment of air and naval assets allowed nearly 40,000 Germans to escape to Italy. At other times, as in preparation for D-Day, aerial interdiction played a key role in preventing or delaying German troops and supplies from reaching the Normandy beachhead. As World War II gave way to Korea and later, Vietnam, Mark does an excellent job of providing insight into how those wars differed from World War II, how political constraints hampered the effectiveness of interdiction efforts, and how the Air Force's own single-mindedness of pursuing the strategic mission overshadowed equipment and training needed to successfully prosecute interdiction missions. Also, the limited effectiveness of interdiction due to sophisticated antiaircraft defenses and topographical features is examined. In sum, Mark presents a very well-balanced account of aerial interdiction from its development in North Africa through Vietnam. His frankness in stating when things went well and when they didn't go well, along with his analysis, add to the credibility of his writing. Lastly, his use of maps at the beginning of each chapter, coupled with photos throughout the book make it easy for the reader to visualize where things are happening and how they are unfolding.

Lyric Generations: Poetry and the Novel in the Long Eighteenth Century, by G. Gabrielle Starr

Eighteenth-century British literary history was long characterized by two central and seemingly discrete movements-the emergence of the novel and the development of Romantic lyric poetry. In fact, recent scholarship reveals that these genres are inextricably bound: constructions of interiority developed in novels changed ideas about what literature could mean and do, encouraging the new focus on private experience and self-perception developed in lyric poetry. In Lyric Generations, Gabrielle Starr rejects the genealogy of lyric poetry in which Romantic poets are thought to have built solely and directly upon the works of Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton. She argues instead that novelists such as Richardson, Haywood, Behn, and others, while drawing upon earlier lyric conventions, ushered in a new language of self-expression and community which profoundly affected the aesthetic goals of lyric poets. Examining the works of Cowper, Smith, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats in light of their competitive dialogue with the novel, Starr advances a literary history that considers formal characteristics as products of historical change. In a world increasingly defined by prose, poets adapted the new forms, characters, and moral themes of the novel in order to reinvigorate poetic practice.

    Review

Refreshingly, this impressive study of poetic form does not read the eighteenth century as a slow road to Romanticism, but fleshes out the period with surprising and important new detail.

    (Times Literary Supplement)

In this intriguing formal study Starr breaks down the conventional barriers between the history of poetry and the history of the novel... Overall, a subtle and carefully executed genre study, of interest to anyone in 18th-century or Romantic studies.

    (Choice)

For fifteen years or so, using a term provided by Mikhail Bakhtin, some Wordsworthians have characterized Wordsworth's lyric poetry as 'novelized.' G. Gabrielle Starr's Lyric Generations gives that characterization new force en specificity in the context of a larger argument that traces the interrelations of poetry and the novel through the long eighteenth century.

    (Don Bialostosky Wordsworth Circle)

The rise of the novel, argues Starr, is strongly influenced by the lyric poetry which preceded it, while at the other end of the century romantic poetry owes much, in turn, to the rise of the novel.

    (Bill Phillips Cercles)

Starr is an excellent close reader, and her observations about so large and diverse an array of texts are fresh, striking, and downright smart.

    (Sophie Gee Eighteenth-Century Fiction)

Starr provides a brilliant reading of Clarissa.

(Christopher Johnson New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century)

Starr excels... in juxtaposing works seldom compared and so granting us the wherewithal to reframe familiar histories of formal change.

    (Deirdre Lynch Modern Language Quarterly)

Original and compelling book... that should inspire discussion for some time to come.

    (Anne Williams Studies in Romanticism)

In this invigorating study, Gabrielle Starr shows that the lyric and the novel in the eighteenth century, far from being rivals or opposites, were codependents. In addition to novelistic elements in poems and lyric passages in novels, there were deeper currents of mutual development in a complex reimagining of subjectivity and representation. Lyric Generations ranges over a very wide range of examples, juxtaposing canonical texts with lesser-known ones, and develops a history of generic change that is also a lively and original reinterpretation of individual works.

    (Leo Damrosch, Harvard University)

This is an elegant and well-informed formalist analysis of relations between the lyric and the novel from the mid-seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Starr is remarkably subtle and nuanced in her approach to questions of generic difference and modulation. Her book's stylish prose is thoughtful and lively, and its command of such a wide variety of poems and novels makes it a pleasure to read.

    (Donna Landry, Wayne State University)

Starr's brilliant elucidation of the generic interplay between poetry and prose during the eighteenth century will be welcomed by students of what used to be called the "rise of the novel." Also insightful for scholars of Romantic poetry, as Starr focuses on the way these poets came to use "representational practices pioneered in the novel to bridge the gap between one person's lived experience and that of another." An absorbing selection of Walter Benjamin’s personal manuscripts, images, and documents

The work of the great literary and cultural critic Walter Benjamin is an audacious plotting of history, art, and thought; a reservoir of texts, commentaries, scraps, and fragments of everyday life, art, and dreams. Throughout his life, Benjamin gathered together all kinds of artifacts, assortments of images, texts, and signs, themselves representing experiences, ideas, and hopes, each of which was enthusiastically logged, systematized, and analyzed by their author. In this way, Benjamin laid the groundwork for the salvaging of his own legacy.

Intricate and intimate, Walter Benjamin’s Archive leads readers to the heart of his intellectual world, yielding a rich and detailed portrait of its author.

    A Book of Books
    By T. Porges
It's always wonderful to look into a book or magazine that consists largely of photographs of pages from other books, partly because nothing photographs better, and partly because you are seeing the page in something both like and unlike its native habitat, like an animal in the better kind of zoo.

Because the texts are presented this way, as photographs of autographs (notebooks, postcards, trial drafts of essays, collected photographs with notations), the distance between reader and author is inescapable. Often, when we see a famous text (sometimes,e.g when it's newly translated into contemporary language), we will remark on how contemporary the story feels, how the writer, long dead, feels like someone you know or could know. But with pages like these, the patina of time is present, and so is all of the strangeness of the writer, as much as is left. There's nothing like a trip to the archives to get your bearings relative to a writer; to locate him/her in time, and to feel the presence of time, both as the writer felt it in gathering these scraps together, and as you feel it now.

My favorite image from Benjamin's writing is the Angel of History, who is pinned in the air, blown back and upright by a wind from Paradise (from the Beginning), while all the garbage of every passing moment piles up at her feet. Something like a librarian. Being the angel of history makes movement difficult if not impossible, even when you have to leave Germany to save your life. You can read about that, but it's wonderful to have a chance to see pages from those books. If you're a Benjamin completionist, you will need to buy this book, but even if all you've read are the essays in Arendt's little collection, you will enjoy the added sense of the presence and loss of their author, just the same.

Amazon's star rating system goes askew on this book.

If you are a devoted fan of Walter Benjamin, then it is essential. On the other hand, if you are like me---who has never read Mr. Benjamin's works ---then it won't be such a useful purchase.

Without a flowing textual narrative, this book provides detailed examples of the scraps and notes kept by Mr. Benjamin, who was a compulsive hoarder of all mundane things tied to his highly intellectual pursuits during most of the first half of the last century

Picking Up: On the Streets and Behind the Trucks with the Sanitation Workers of New York City, by Robin Nagle

America’s largest city generates garbage in torrents―11,000 tons a day on average. But New Yorkers don’t give it much attention. They leave their trash on the curb or drop it in a litter basket, and promptly forget about it. And why not? On a schedule so regular you could almost set your watch by it, someone always comes to take it away.

But who, exactly, is that someone? And why is he―or she―so unknown?

In Picking Up, the anthropologist Robin Nagle introduces us to the men and women of New York City’s Department of Sanitation and makes clear why this small army of uniformed workers is the most important labor force on the streets. Seeking to understand every aspect of the Department’s mission, Nagle accompanied crews on their routes, questioned supervisors and commissioners, and listened to story after story about blizzards, hazardous waste, and the insults of everyday New Yorkers. But the more time she spent with the DSNY, the more Nagle realized that observing wasn’t quite enough ― so she joined the force herself. Driving the hulking trucks, she obtained an insider’s perspective on the complex kinships, arcane rules, and obscure lingo unique to the realm of sanitation workers.

Nagle rivetingly chronicles New York City’s four-hundred-year struggle with trash, and traces the city’s waste-management efforts from a time when filth overwhelmed the streets to the far more rigorous practices of today, when the Big Apple is as clean as it’s ever been.

Throughout, Nagle reveals the many unexpected ways in which sanitation workers stand between our seemingly well-ordered lives and the sea of refuse that would otherwise overwhelm us. In the process, she changes the way we understand cities―and ourselves within them.

    Fascinating, well-written and thorough
    By Amazon Customer
In Picking Up, Robin Nagle brings us an unprecedented, meticulously researched and also first-hand look not just at the workings of the Department of Sanitation of the City of New York, but also a look at the people who do the job: from their practical jokes to their sensibility, to what makes them tick and what makes them mad to - and this may be my favorite part - their rich jargon. Nagle didn't just do field work to research the book, she ultimately joined the ranks of the DSNY and worked full time as a "garbageman". The result of her efforts is a rich, beautifully balanced portrait of the DSNY system that I could not put down (and I have absolutely nothing to do with, nor do I know anyone who works in, trash collection). The book argues that trash collection is among the most important (and dangerous) jobs in New York, and it contains a wealth of information about life in throughout the history of the city that could stand on its own as a history of New York.

Picking Up would be worth reading if only to learn the DSNY workers' perspective on the disastrous 2010 Christmas Blizzard in New York - a nightmare of failed logistics that was publicly (and, in Nagle's view, wrongly) blamed on DSNY supervisors and rank and file, who were portrayed as bureaucratic, vindictive and irresponsible. The stories of true sacrifice by DSNY employees are deeply moving, and I put the book down with a new-found and admiration and deep respect for those who do the job. This is one great book.

Open the lid; it's a good trashy read...
    By John Williamson
It's difficult for anyone to imagine a good book about trash... call it refuse, rubbish or garbage, whatever you might like. However, sometimes one can be quite surprised, even as a New Yorker.

Author Robin Nagle's Picking Up is about the DSNY, the City of New York's Department of Sanitation, and it's an interesting and sometimes fascinating book. As the subtitle "On the Streets and Behind the Trucks with the Sanitation Workers of New York City" suggests, this one takes you down to the road level where the trash bags, garbage cans and dumpsters exist, waiting their scheduled pickup.

Ms. Nagle teaches anthropology at New York University, and has been anthropologist-in-residence at the DSNY since 2006. After reading this book, it isn't hard to be a bit more grateful of the efforts of the men and women who clean up after us, regardless of where you live. These unsung heroes are essential to us, unless you're one of those who has to take your own trash to a municipal dump or some such suburban facility.

As one reads the pages of this work, it becomes amazing to realize that Manhattan Island itself has historically been extended into both the Hudson and East Rivers by building on its own trash. The author does an excellent job of covering the role of the long history of sanitation and its workers in the Borough of New York, going from such topics as 17th-centuryNew Amsterdam's ban on scavenging pigs to Street Commissioner George E. Waring Jr.'s spotless White Wings cleaning crews at the turn of the 20th century. The author also looks at the command breakdown that tarnished the reputation of the DSNY after the 2010 blizzard.

She reveals that the DSNY has its own fascinating jargon: "getting banged" is undergoing corrective disciplinary measures and "disco rice" refers to maggots. The term "mongo" refers to objects salvaged by sanitation workers from the trash, and can be used as either a noun or as a verb. In addition, sanitation workers should be referred to as "san men" and not as "garbage men."

We are reminded that sanitation workers have a higher on-the-job death rate than any other uniformed department in the city, firefighters and police officers and firefighters included. They have one of the 10 deadliest jobs in America, due to traffic accidents and exposure to toxic waste, yet their responsibilities are not at all as respected, much less admired. She quotes a sanitation worker: "You can go your whole life without ever having to call a cop. And you can also go your whole life without ever calling a fireman. But you need a sanitation worker every single day."

Ms. Nagle's book is not just to make us more aware of sanitation workers. She reminds us that they are New York's Most Essential. She writes: "Sanitation is the most important uniformed force on the street."

Picking Up is the result not just of Ms. Nagle's years researching the New York Department of Sanitation, but of a deeply-rooted preoccupation with trash that dates back to her own childhood. She has taken a topic that many of us would pass on, thinking that it would be boring or perhaps even disgusting, but instead we find a book that reads like a novel. Open it and you'll find (and pardon the pun) that it's a good trashy read.

    Who Knew??
    By S. Olsen
As a child, I remember watching a "Sesame Street" segment about garbage disposal. It began with a banana peel being tossed in a garbage chute, and ended with a barge chugging out of a harbor with a sing-songy jingle reciting, "Goodbye, garbage!" I was always troubled by that segment - notwithstanding the obviously absurd implication that garbage dumped in the ocean ceases to exist, I also felt that there must be more - a LOT more - to the story. Years later, I sometimes observed rumbling garbage trucks and wondered about their mission and the people who carried it out.

Enter Dr. Robin Nagle, anthropologist, professor, and sanitation worker. "Picking Up" is a moving, gritty, and sometimes laugh-out-loud-funny meditation on sanitation in the modern world. Nagle considers sanitation workers the single most important uniformed force in New York City, and after recovering from the audacity of such an idea, I had to acknowledge its plausibility. Her descriptions of New York BEFORE modern sanitation opened my eyes to blessings I never realized I had. I used to think of the City as grimy, even dirty, but compared to the ankle-deep filth and rampant disease of earlier times, I now recognize its astonishing cleanliness.

This is one of the most literate books I have ever read. Nagle tips her hat to at least half-a-dozen literary works, from Dante's "Inferno" to Douglas Adams's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". That, the exhaustive end notes, and the occasional word that sent me to a dictionary ("peristaltic"??), engendered a deep respect for the author's scholarship. I am relatively well-read, with an above-average education, but Nagle's prose led me to intellectual depths I never even knew were there.

I felt that "Picking Up" is about so much more than just garbage and sanitation workers. This is a book linked to universal human experience, through the basic life functions essential to one of today's most vibrant and challenging urban centers.

The Salvage Of The Century, by Ric Wharton

This is the true story of one of the most ambitious and successful marine salvage operations ever undertaken.
The story begins in 1942, in the darkest days of the second world war. Hitler had invaded Russia and was rampaging towards Moscow with Stalin fighting for survival. America had not yet entered the war and Britain stood alone fighting for her own survival.
Winston Churchill recognized immediately that Operation Barbarossa, the German surprise attack on Russia, would give him the breathing space he needed to get America into the war and to prepare for the invasion of occupied Europe.
Russia was neither equipped nor prepared for the German invasion and came very close to capitulation. Stalin demanded help from Britain to supply urgently needed war materials. The only possible route to ship supplies to Russia was around the north of Norway to Mumansk in the Barents sea and so the infamous Arctic Convoys were started.
America, while not yet in the war, supplied the war materials, by convoy on British Merchant ship to the west coast of Scotland. The convoys were then reformed into the Arctic convoys to Mumansk generally escorted by a heavy Cruiser and numerous smaller destroyers and escort vessels.
The convoys operated from 1941 to 1945 during which time they shipped more that 12,000 tanks, 20,000 aircraft, 350,000 tons of explosives, 400,000 motor vehicle, 135,000 rifles and vast quantities of fuel and other supplies.
During those convoys just over one hundred warships and merchantmen were lost, along with thousands of lives.
One of the most tragic and heroic losses was the heavy cruiser HMS Edinburgh in April 1942.
Churchill simply did not trust Stalin and insisted that all the shipments be paid for at the time in gold. Stalin drained Russia’s gold reserves and transported the bullion from Moscow to Murmansk.
The gold bullion payments were always shipped on the lead escort vessel of the returning convoy. In April 1942, this was HMS Edinburgh.
Zigzagging ahead of the returning convoy at 33 knots, just below the ice cap, she was struck by two torpedoes and mortally damaged. The crew heroically kept the ship afloat and were heading slowly back to Murmansk when they were attacked by three German destroyers. With all the gun directors out of action, they succeeded in hand laying the guns and sinking one of the German destroyer, the Hermann Shoemamn. The Germans then broke off the engagement, but not before one of their torpedoes hit the HMS Edinburgh again.
The survivors abandoned ship and HMS Edinburgh sank in over 800 feet of water in the Barents Sea, taking 5 ½ tons of Stalin’s Gold to the bottom with her.
This is the true story of how Ric Wharton’s company, Wharton Williams Ltd. (2W) found the wreck and, using newly developed oilfield saturation diving technology, recovered all the bullion without any diving accidents. The gold was worth £50 million at the time, £200 million at today’s prices.
It is a fascinating story of detailed research, skullduggery and dishonesty and gold fever of governments. The salvage remains a world record for the value of gold bullion recovered and the water depth of the recovery operation.
Ric Wharton has had a long career in the diving and salvage industry and this book gives a fascinating insight into the exciting world of diving salvage.

    Author's Comments
    By Ric Wharton
I wrote this book to record this extraordinary and record breaking event, in detail and as it actually happened. The book reveals the great courage and suffering of the HMS "Edinburgh" crew when she was sunk in 1942 in the Barents Sea after and epic engagement against overwhelming odds. The book also details the bravery of my pioneering diving crew, who entered the wreck and recovered the gold bullion working under the most hazardous conditions. The book has some 100 photos and illustrations that really bring the story to life. Even though I wrote the book, I am still fascinated every time I read it. I have been a diver and wreck hunter all my life and still cannot believe that this actually happened to me.

Truely the salvage of the 20th Century
    By Andrew Creed
Right from the start The Salvage of the Century grips you as a must read. The coverage of what is still today a breath-taking dare devil salvage is truely superb. The mix between pushing the boundaries of human capability, and the romance of discovering and recovering a huge amount of gold makes the book film material. Every diver's dream is to discover a hidden treasure, in The Salvage of the Century that is exactly what the team did. Unlike most pleasure divers who flock to the safe warm waters in search of their own find of a lifetime, these guys worked in sub zero temperature in some of the most unforgiving waters known to man. The expedition was straight out of a James Bond book, £50,000,000 of gold bullion on an unarmed British vessel in Russian waters, I quite expected the authour to be Ian Fleming. Except like any good book that is entirely based on reality there is a twist!
In summary this a superb account of risk, expoloration and courage under the high seas, told passionately by Ric Wharton.
