The Last Waltz: Another Pride and Prejudice............
By maryann
Another homerun out of the ball park by the author. It is a well written novel with twists and turns to keep the reader interested in the novel. It is a complex novel with it starting out the the twinkle in Elizabeth's eyes and the witty young exuberant lady that she is and the author has such a way with words that you don't want to put the book down.Sentences are used to keep you guessing and on several occasions I thought I knew what was coming next and was surprised that I was wrong.
The characters in the novel were as usual and both there were a few new ones added to the story to complicate things as they happened.
I liked the fact that Mrs. Bennet's plotting didn't turn out exactly the way she wanted for Lizzy and it made me laugh.
All ends the way I hoped it would and love endures for all!
This was a different and lovely plot and I truly do enjoy the author's writing. I just loved, "Thursday's Child" and have it rated amongst the top that I have read.
Look forward to more from our author and I'm sure I will re-read this novel as I did her other novel. Thank you for an enjoyable day of reading

Another heartbreaking story by this author
By Regina M Mayorga
I've noticed that my favorite JAFF authors are the ones who truly take their time in giving us their stories, and not just cranking them out every month. This author seemed to take her time from her other amazing story and now the rewards may be reaped.

I loved Thursday's Child and this story is just as heartbreaking but so different. I loved how accepting Darcy was of Lizzy's limitations, and (spoiler alert) in the end he suffered through some limitations himself. What I will say, however, is while the intimacy scenes aren't really explicit, Darcy was way too enthusiastic and quick in his intimacies with Lizzy. I can kind of understand her because (again spoiler alert sort of) she met him at 15 and he became the subject of her fantasies. But he was way too bold in his physical declarations in my opinion.

And a personal critique: I didn't like how "close" he was to Alyssa. Ahh that made me cringe because I hate seeing him so much as touch any other woman that's not Lizzy. But fortunately it doesn't last long.

I would definitely read this story again. While it wasn't perfect, I loved the vulnerability, the deep love, and the joy from that love. It was certainly a beautiful and human story where even though no one was perfect, all our favorite couples found they were indeed perfect for each other.

Edit: (And final spoiler alert): we all know Colonel Fitzwilliam's famous slip regarding Darcy's involvement in the separation of Jane and Bingley. This story has a similar slip, but I was much more shocked by what he inadvertently said. In the end, though, the story needed that because we needed the "blow up" between ODC.

A WINNER!
By Precious
Having read Thursday's Child by this author I kept looking for more. After two years, The Last Waltz appeared and it was worth the wait! Loved a completely different take on this couple. I see in other reviews some did not like Darcy being so forward. Well, this fan was grateful to see a more sensuous man. Sometimes I can get so frustrated with him and Lizzy. In this story they do take liberties but never cross that line. The author explains WHY Lizzy allows what she can't or won't stop. Read this story, you won't be offended. I look forward to the next novel by Pat Santarsiero even if I have to wait another two years.

Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Wireless Telegraphy

In presenting this Handbook, the author has endeavoured to explain, in the simplest possible manner, the theory and practice of Wireless Telegraphy.

It has been his aim to make the subject intelligible to persons who do not possess much technical knowledge, and to be at the same time brief and accurate.

The book has been so arranged as to be useful as a reference book on the subject for students and amateurs in this special branch of electrical science.

Further and more complete explanations of the various phenomena described can be obtained from the standard scientific works on the subject, but it has been the object of the author to deal with the subject clearly and simply without going too deeply into the many highly technical problems involved.

I love the old radio books because they give you an appreciation of how amateur radio was in its fledgling years. Plus much of the information, concepts, and practices are still relevant today. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning more about the development of this hobby.

Thanks!

It also offers in a detailed and comprehensive manner a myriad of useful technical aspects
By Jose Rafael Pulido G.
In my view, this book describes the main constructive characteristics and functional principles of very high voltage substations. It also offers in a detailed and comprehensive manner a myriad of useful technical aspects, and managerial strategies for the design of secondary electrical systems according to the latest technologies.
I strongly recommend it for everyone involved in the design and construction of very high voltage power systems. But since this book is a whole treatise on substations of any voltage level, it will also be useful for young engineers entering the electrical power system business.
I particularly like the chapter related to technological trends, but what I love most are the pictures inside this book.

The Longbourn Will: A Pride and Prejudice variation, by Carolyn Whyte

What if the men of Pride and Prejudice refused to take 'no' for an answer? In Jane Austen's original tale, Mr Bingley accepts 'no' from Mr Darcy about Jane; Mr Collins accepts 'no' from Mrs Bennet about Jane; Mr Wickham and Colonel Fitzwilliam are stopped from showing more interest in Elizabeth by lack of fortune; and of course, Mr Darcy accepts 'no' from Elizabeth at Hunsford. This variation looks at what might have happened, had those events gone differently, and, as the title suggests, what the reason behind some of the changes might have been. Could Jane turn down Mr Collins? What if Wickham had proposed to Elizabeth before she knew his character? And could anyone resist Colonel Fitzwilliam, had he been in possession of a good fortune?

This story follows the original, more or less, and does not contain any material of an explicit adult nature.

Good Darcy, good Lizzy, pretty good story
By texas girl
Longbourn Will was better than most variations if a smidge too may twist & turns. The true will and its implications are in the hands of Wickham. The truth comes out eventually. I hate Wickham.

Carolyn Whyte's 2nd effort, Darcy's Denial, was excellent- 5 Stars. The first part of a 2 book retelling of P&P. Angst filled Darcy is my favorite and Denial may be the most forlorn portrayal ever. I look forward to reading anything she writes.

A very engaging variation.
By S. Nezda
I read two of Carolyn Whyte's Pride and Prejudice variations in as many days and while that shows how much I enjoyed the author's writing style, it has left the plots rather mixed in my mind. That being the case, I'll just comment on the stories being long enough to contain great plot twists and adventure as well as development of the characters feelings for each other. I also like that the narrative voice is not only Elizabeth's, but also Darcy's and other characters.

Very good story about cheating and deception. The interconnection of characters in this story were amazing, but unfortunately too many of them were conniving men who thought only of themselves. Collins and Wickham compete for first place for wicked, evil people in this story and both deserve the consequences they received. Worried for Darcy in this story, but finally Elizabeth gets her head and heart where they truly belong.

  • The play Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.

Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play.

Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera. During the English Restoration, it was revived and heavily revised by William Davenant. David Garrick's 18th-century version also modified several scenes, removing material then considered indecent, and Georg Benda's operatic adaptation omitted much of the action and added a happy ending. Performances in the 19th century, including Charlotte Cushman's, restored the original text, and focused on greater realism. John Gielgud's 1935 version kept very close to Shakespeare's text, and used Elizabethan costumes and staging to enhance the drama. In the 20th and into the 21st century, the play has been adapted in versions as diverse as George Cukor's comparatively faithful 1936 production, Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 version, Baz Luhrmann's 1996 MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet and the 2013 non-Shakespearian adaptation by Carlo Carlei.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Skillfully read by Claire Higgins, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will hold listeners spellbound as they become involved in the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues and in Romeo and Juliet's plight of love. Higgins' reading is very natural, and her voice is exceedingly pleasant to listen to. The cassette includes a plot summary, an introduction to Shakespeare by Leon Garfield, as well as supplementary information about Shakespeare and his writings by Dr. Rex Gibson, all read by Simon Russell Beale. This additional information is very worthwhile and will increase the listener's understanding of Shakespeare and why he continues to be important in literature. Peter Hutchins arranged the period background music. The technical qualities are excellent, and the teaching objectives are met. This program is appropriate for individual or group listening, and the additional information will provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A superior acquisition for both public and school libraries with audio collections.

    From Library Journal
This production of Romeo and Juliet featuring Kenneth Branagh and Sir John Gielgud is a superb contribution to the field of classics on cassette. The stunning performance by the Renaissance Theatre Company captures all the color and emotion of Shakespeare's eloquent tragedy of young love. With Samantha Bond as Juliet, Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, and Judi Dench as Nurse, the play, which is set in 16th-century Verona, contains some of the most passionate dialog ever written. An excellent musical score by Patrick Doyle accompanies the actors, as well as a full array of authentic sound effects. The pounding of hooves, the chiming of church bells, and the clashing of angry swords enrich this outstanding listening experience. A 24-page booklet complete with sketches and photos of the actors, a synopsis of the play, and background information is included in the package. Highly recommended for most libraries.

    Review
"We can more easily decide between Shakespear and any other author, than between him and himself. Shall we quote any more passages to shew his genius or the beauty of Romeo and Juliet? At that rate, we might quote the whole."

    Great for Students
    By LC
I am a student who had to read this book and I couldn't understand most of the stuff Shakespeare was writing. We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever
    By Newbia
This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).
Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.
There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.
Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.
I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

    Great Kindle Version
    By MsEnglishTeacher
I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

    Meredith for Specialists
    By Dr. Richard M. Price
I ordered this book, supposing it would be a selection of the most revealing and characterful of Meredith's letters, and was disappointed to find it is essentially a supplement to Cline's three-volume edition (1970), giving letters either omitted by Cline or printed in an incomplete form. Most of the new letters are short and of limited interest, though the annotation by Shaheen (the author of one of the best studies of the novels) is impressively learned and generally reliable. This book is essential reading for the Meredith specialist, but cannot be recommended to the general reader. Meredith was too reserved to be a great letter-writer, comparable to Cowper or Keats; but his style, vigorous and free of cliche, is as delightful in his letters as in his novels. The best place to begin remains his son's two-volume edition of selected letters, published in 1912 and easy to pick up via the internet.

A Rip-Roaring Adventure of One of Literature's Most Famous Heroes
    By Litlovingmama
Although written in 1808, this version of Homer's Odyssey is is surprisingly readable. Yes, the language is "King-James-ish", but the story is so interesting and Lamb's powers of description are so good that you are soon pulled in. He skips over some of the duller details of Homer's epic poem and sticks to Ulysses adventures.

I liked Lamb for daring to make moral judgments, calling the greedy sailors "covetous wretches" and the Cyclops a "cannibal." When Ulysses' men eat oxen reserved for the gods, Lamb describes the feast a "rash and sacrilegious banquet." He details Ulysses' descent into hell and of the horrible punishments being suffered there. And he emphasizes Ulysses' choosing to be faithful to his wife in spite of the repeated advances of Calypso.

    A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I had purchased the kindle version of this book. That version did not have illustrations. The illustrations are necessary for a book like this. So I bought the hard copy. And again no illustrations. The publisher did the book on the cheap. Too bad. Otherwise it would have been a great book.

A fine book for early radio enthusiasts.
    By A. M. White
I collect and restore vintage radios 1918 through 1925 and have accumulated quite the library of radio technology books from that era. Mills' book, along with Radio For Everybody by Lescarboura and Radio Simplified by Kendall and Koehler, are the three "must have" volumes if you are a collector of early regenerative tube sets. They represent the most popular tomes that graced radio enthusiasts' shelves in that remarkable period of the dawn of broadcast radio.

Examining the "Dance" as a literary creation
    By Christopher Culver
Isabelle Joyau's INVESTIGATING POWELL'S "A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME" is a set of seven essays plus conclusion dealing with various aspects of the British author's twelve-volume masterwork. The essays are:

    1) The First-Person Narrator 2) Time in "A Dance to the Music of Time" 3) Society 4) Structure 5) Surface and Depth 6) The Abyss of Carnality and 7) The Series and its Generic Affiliations

This is not a book for the casual reader of the "Dance" who just wants a guide to the action and characters, but a work of literary criticism. However, I don't think Joyau has much to say in this vein. Much of the book is the standard criticism spiel big on terminology and short on insight. An exception is the chapter "Society" that can help the contemporary, non-British reader understand better the world in which Jenkins moved prior to World War II.

    PREFACE by Amy Lowell 1916
This is a book of stories. For that reason I have excluded all purely lyrical poems. But the word "stories" has been stretched to its fullest application. It includes both narrative poems, properly so called; tales divided into scenes; and a few pieces of less obvious story-telling import in which one might say that the dramatis personae are air, clouds, trees, houses, streets, and such like things.
It has long been a favourite idea of mine that the rhythms of 'vers libre' have not been sufficiently plumbed, that there is in them a power of variation which has never yet been brought to the light of experiment. I think it was the piano pieces of Debussy, with their strange likeness to short vers libre poems, which first showed me the close kinship of music and poetry, and there flashed into my mind the idea of using the movement of poetry in somewhat the same way that the musician uses the movement of music.
It was quite evident that this could never be done in the strict pattern of a metrical form, but the flowing, fluctuating rhythm of vers libre seemed to open the door to such an experiment. First, however, I considered the same method as applied to the more pronounced movements of natural objects. If the reader will turn to the poem, "A Roxbury Garden", he will find in the first two sections an attempt to give the circular movement of a hoop bowling along the ground, and the up and down, elliptical curve of a flying shuttlecock.
From these experiments, it is but a step to the flowing rhythm of music. In "The Cremona Violin", I have tried to give this flowing, changing rhythm to the parts in which the violin is being played. The effect is farther heightened, because the rest of the poem is written in the seven line Chaucerian stanza; and, by deserting this ordered pattern for the undulating line of vers libre, I hoped to produce something of the suave, continuous tone of a violin. Again, in the violin parts themselves, the movement constantly changes, as will be quite plain to any one reading these passages aloud.
In "The Cremona Violin", however, the rhythms are fairly obvious and regular. I set myself a far harder task in trying to transcribe the various movements of Stravinsky's "Three Pieces 'Grotesques', for String Quartet". Several musicians, who have seen the poem, think the movement accurately given.
These experiments lead me to believe that there is here much food for thought and matter for study, and I hope many poets will follow me in opening up the still hardly explored possibilities of vers libre.
A good many of the poems in this book are written in "polyphonic prose". A form about which I have written and spoken so much that it seems hardly necessary to explain it here. Let me hastily add, however, that the word "prose" in its name refers only to the typographical arrangement, for in no sense is this a prose form. Only read it aloud, Gentle Reader, I beg, and you will see what you will see. For a purely dramatic form, I know none better in the whole range of poetry. It enables the poet to give his characters the vivid, real effect they have in a play, while at the same time writing in the 'decor'.
One last innovation I have still to mention. It will be found in "Spring Day", and more fully enlarged upon in the series, "Towns in Colour". In these poems, I have endeavoured to give the colour, and light, and shade, of certain places and hours, stressing the purely pictorial effect, and with little or no reference to any other aspect of the places described. It is an enchanting thing to wander through a city looking for its unrelated beauty, the beauty by which it captivates the sensuous sense of seeing.
I have always loved aquariums, but for years I went to them and looked, and looked, at those swirling, shooting, looping patterns of fish, which always defied transcription to paper until I hit upon the "unrelated" method. The result is in "An Aquarium". I think the first thing which turned me in this direction was John Gould Fletcher's "London Excursion", in "Some Imagist Poets". I here record my thanks.
For the substance of the poems—why, the poems are here. No one writing to-day can fail to be affected by the great war raging in Europe at this time. We are too near it to do more than touch upon it. But, obliquely, it is suggested in many of these poems, most notably those in the section, "Bronze Tablets". The Napoleonic Era is an epic subject, and waits a great epic poet. I have only been able to open a few windows upon it here and there. But the scene from the windows is authentic, and the watcher has used eyes, and ears, and heart, in watching.

    My Favorite -

    "Spring Day"

    Bath
The day is fresh-washed and fair, and there is a smell of tulips and narcissus in the air.
The sunshine pours in at the bath-room window and bores through the water in the bath-tub in lathes and planes of greenish-white. It cleaves the water into flaws like a jewel, and cracks it to bright light.
Little spots of sunshine lie on the surface of the water and dance, dance, and their reflections wobble deliciously over the ceiling; a stir of my finger sets them whirring, reeling. I move a foot, and the planes of light in the water jar. I lie back and laugh, and let the green-white water, the sun-flawed beryl water, flow over me. The day is almost too bright to bear, the green water covers me from the too bright day. I will lie here awhile and play with the water and the sun spots.
The sky is blue and high. A crow flaps by the window, and there is a whiff of tulips and narcissus in the air.
    Breakfast Table
In the fresh-washed sunlight, the breakfast table is decked and white. It offers itself in flat surrender, tendering tastes, and smells, and colours, and metals, and grains, and the white cloth falls over its side, draped and wide. Wheels of white glitter in the silver coffee-pot, hot and spinning like catherine-wheels, they whirl, and twirl—and my eyes begin to smart, the little white, dazzling wheels prick them like darts. Placid and peaceful, the rolls of bread spread themselves in the sun to bask. A stack of butter-pats, pyramidal, shout orange through the white, scream, flutter, call: "Yellow! Yellow! Yellow!" Coffee steam rises in a stream, clouds the silver tea-service with mist, and twists up into the sunlight, revolved, involuted, suspiring higher and higher, fluting in a thin spiral up the high blue sky. A crow flies by and croaks at the coffee steam. The day is new and fair with good smells in the air.
    Walk
Over the street the white clouds meet, and sheer away without touching.
On the sidewalks, boys are playing marbles. Glass marbles, with amber and blue hearts, roll together and part with a sweet clashing noise. The boys strike them with black and red striped agates. The glass marbles spit crimson when they are hit, and slip into the gutters under rushing brown water. I smell tulips and narcissus in the air, but there are no flowers anywhere, only white dust whipping up the street, and a girl with a gay Spring hat and blowing skirts. The dust and the wind flirt at her ankles and her neat, high-heeled patent leather shoes. Tap, tap, the little heels pat the pavement, and the wind rustles among the flowers on her hat.
A water-cart crawls slowly on the other side of the way. It is green and gay with new paint, and rumbles contentedly, sprinkling clear water over the white dust. Clear zigzagging water, which smells of tulips and narcissus.
The thickening branches make a pink 'grisaille' against the blue sky.
Whoop! The clouds go dashing at each other and sheer away just in time. Whoop! And a man's hat careers down the street in front of the white dust, leaps into the branches of a tree, veers away and trundles ahead of the wind, jarring the sunlight into spokes of rose-colour and green.
A motor-car cuts a swathe through the bright air, sharp-beaked, irresistible, shouting to the wind to make way. A glare of dust and sunshine tosses together behind it, and settles down. The sky is quiet and high, and the morning is fair with fresh-washed air.
    Midday and Afternoon
Swirl of crowded streets. Shock and recoil of traffic. The stock-still brick facade of an old church, against which the waves of people lurch and withdraw. Flare of sunshine down side-streets. Eddies of light in the windows of chemists' shops, with their blue, gold, purple jars, darting colours far into the crowd. Loud bangs and tremors, murmurings out of high windows, whirring of machine belts, blurring of horses and motors. A quick spin and shudder of brakes on an electric car, and the jar of a church-bell knocking against the metal blue of the sky. I am a piece of the town, a bit of blown dust, thrust along with the crowd. Proud to feel the pavement under me, reeling with feet. Feet tripping, skipping, lagging, dragging, plodding doggedly, or springing up and advancing on firm elastic insteps. A boy is selling papers, I smell them clean and new from the press. They are fresh like the air, and pungent as tulips and narcissus.
The blue sky pales to lemon, and great tongues of gold blind the shop-windows, putting out their contents in a flood of flame.
    Night and Sleep
The day takes her ease in slippered yellow. Electric signs gleam out along the shop fronts, following each other. They grow, and grow, and blow into patterns of fire-flowers as the sky fades. Trades scream in spots of light at the unruffled night. Twinkle, jab, snap, that means a new play; and over the way: plop, drop, quiver, is the sidelong sliver of a watchmaker's sign with its length on another street. A gigantic mug of beer effervesces to the atmosphere over a tall building, but the sky is high and has her own stars, why should she heed ours?
I leave the city with speed. Wheels whirl to take me back to my trees and my quietness. The breeze which blows with me is fresh-washed and clean, it has come but recently from the high sky. There are no flowers in bloom yet, but the earth of my garden smells of tulips and narcissus.
My room is tranquil and friendly. Out of the window I can see the distant city, a band of twinkling gems, little flower-heads with no stems. I cannot see the beer-glass, nor the letters of the restaurants and shops I passed, now the signs blur and all together make the city, glowing on a night of fine weather, like a garden stirring and blowing for the Spring.
The night is fresh-washed and fair and there is a whiff of flowers in the air.
Wrap me close, sheets of lavender. Pour your blue and purple dreams into my ears. The breeze whispers at the shutters and mutters queer tales of old days, and cobbled streets, and youths leaping their horses down marble stairways. Pale blue lavender, you are the colour of the sky when it is fresh-washed and fair... I smell the stars... they are like tulips and narcissus... I smell them in the air.

    Fabulous Taste of Lowell's Poetry
    By Marion
I love the poems in this short book of Ms. Lowell's poetry. It has a searchable table of contents and some of her best work. Reading it whet my appetite to buy one of her anthologies. I highly recommend Googling her poem, "A Decade". Billy Collins totally ripped off a lot of that poem.
