The writers of these articles, probably fully masters of the subject, cannot, from the very nature of the case, command the time, space, and amplitude of illustration absolutely necessary for the full elucidation of the mechanical processes involved in the construction of the most elaborate and ingenious of all musical instruments.

Sort on facts and dimensions. It may give you food for thought about one persons approaches to occasional mechanical issues, but it you don't already know how to build a working organ, you'll still be thoroughly lost after digesting this book.

About the Author
Marcia F. Brown is the author of four poetry collections, including When We Invented Water (Moon Pie Press 2014) and What On Earth (Moon Pie Press 2010). As Poet Laureate for the City of Portland, Maine (2013-2015) she edited the anthology, Port City Poems, Contemporary Poets Celebrate Portland, Maine (Maine Poetry Central 2013) which was a finalist for the 2014 Maine Literary Awards, and launched the Words Matter Visiting Poet's Series presenting acclaimed poet Tony Hoagland at Portland's Hannaford Hall in April 2015. Her work is widely published in literary journals and anthologies, including Garrison Keillor's Good Poems, American Places (Penguin Books 2011). She resides in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with her husband.

A great gift for yourself and others.

I once was in a book club. Briefly. It was a dreadful experience and I vowed never to return. I bought Well Read, Well Fed in part for friends who are devoted book club members and, in part, to see what the literati might eat. Oh my goodness. This book is a sweet and lovely collection of remembrances that ground the tasty sounding recipes in summer sunsets in the Adirondacks, dreaded chickpeas become "chic" peas in Manhattan and easy to make shrimp and rice salad transport the reader to romantic Greek isles. I was delighted to find the seasonal reading list suggestion and gratified to find some of them books I had already read and others, books I probably should read.
Well Read, Well Fed is a great gift to yourself or others... whether or not you consider yourself a cook. I bought several for gifts but am keeping one of them for myself. The recipes are easy to follow but first, read the sweet vignettes that preface each recipe and grab one of the books that follow. Loved it!

About the Author
John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. He attended Harrow and trained as a barrister at New College, Oxford. Although called to the bar in 1890, rather than practise law, Galsworthy travelled extensively and began to write.

It was as a playwright Galsworthy had his first success. His playslike his most famous work, the series of novels comprising The Forsyte Sagadealt primarily with class and the social issues of the day, and he was especially harsh on the class from which he himself came.

The victor has the privilege of writing the story of the war; for one mistrusts the vanquished, because he will try to palliate and excuse his defeats. But we are victors and vanquished at one and the same time, and in depicting our success the difficult problem confronts us of not forgetting that our strength did not last out to the end.

Exceptionally tragic is the fate of our Fleet. It embodied the sense of power resulting from the unification of the Empire, a sense which was conscious of its responsibility to provide for the suitable security of our immensely flourishing political and economical expansion. By creating a fleet we strengthened our claim to sea-power, without which the Empire must wither away, we remained a thorn in the side of the British, and their ill-will was the constant accompaniment of our growth. The freedom of the seas, which we strove for in line with our evolution, England was never willing to grant, even if it had to come to a world-war on the point.

In the four years' struggle which Germany waged against the desire of its enemies to destroy it, the Fleet was able, beyond all foreign expectations, to hold its own, and what is more, it was our conduct of the naval war that succeeded in forcing the stubborn enemy to the brink of destruction. But, nevertheless, we have lost the war, and with the surrender of the German Fleet the expectations of an independent shaping of our destiny have vanished for long enough.

To the history of the naval war, as it presented itself to me and was for some years carried on under my guidance, this book will add a contribution.

This is a book w/ a very odd format. It is a bound photocopy of a marked-up original, with underlinings and notes. The background is rather dark. There are no illustrations.

This book is an important one. Much has been written from the Royal Navy's perspective - but one must attempt to understand from the High Seas Fleet's perspective also. Adm Scheer was all too brief in his published discussion; I would like to have had a more full account.

This book is published with the view of aiding the farmer and dairyman in building his barns so they will properly and economically answer the purpose for which they are intended.

Our Architectural Department was established for the purpose of assisting our customers in not only planning barns that will meet all their requirements in the most economical construction, but also to assist them in solving all other problems that come up, such as proper lighting, heating, ventilating, drainage, disposal of manure, and other sanitary and hygienic problems, as well as proper protection against weather exposure and fire risk.

The department is conducted by men of wide experience who are competent to handle all kinds of farm building construction, and they will combine utility and sanitation together with economy and strength. Our landscape architect can so arrange the farm buildings of any large estate that they will harmonize with their surroundings, and be in harmony with one another. Your farm buildings can display individuality and good architectural design, and at the same time be practical, modern and convenient, separately and collectively.

All the plans shown in this book are our own original designs, produced by our Architectural Department. Some of them have been copied from our illustrations and published in other books and periodicals.

These plans represent the practical results from ideas mostly originated by farmers and dairymen, but are worked out in detail by our expert dairy architects to meet the climatic conditions and other requirements of individual cases.

Let Us Help You Plan Your Barn

Whenever you build a barn or any other kind of building, you build for a definite purpose; this definite purpose should be kept in mind from the start to the finish. Whether it be for properly housing and caring for live stock, for the storage of feed and farm implements, for preparing products for market, or for a combination of some of these, no matter what the purpose may be, it should be built with the correct amount of floor space for each purpose, the total of which will determine the size of the building.

This rule seems very simple, but sometimes becomes very complicated when the question of economical construction is taken into consideration. For example, a barn 40 feet square would have a floor area of 1, 600 square feet, and may be of the correct size and meet all the requirements for which it is intended. At the same time it may be found after careful calculation that a building 32x50 feet, which has the same floor area, will also meet the same requirements, and may cost less on account of not requiring so heavy construction for a 32-foot span as would be necessary for a 40-foot span. This is where the practical builder and trained architect, who is thoroughly versed in the requirements of modern farm buildings, can be of great service to the farmer and dairyman.

Good reference and historical

This despite some poor copies is a wealth of information as to types of barns and oddly enough proposed application. It can in certain instances identify a particular barn as to date and origin. Good reference to show the barn enthusiast about many types or styles of the time and would be good to teach adult or child alike.

About the Author
George MacDonald was a Scottish author and minister best known for his fairy tales and fantasy novels. A theologian, MacDonald was pastor of Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel before moving to London to teach at the University of London. MacDonald s work influenced many fantasy writers including J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L Engle; he is recognized as a mentor to Lewis Carroll and heavily influenced Carroll s decision to submit Alice s Adventures in Wonderland for publication. MacDonald was a prolific writer, and penned such fantasy classics as Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, and Lillith. George MacDonald died in 1905.

The Hidden Life- a very insightful poem

I was not familiar with George MacDonald but I became acquainted with his works after I had read how C.S. Lewis was very much influenced by him. I am not well versed on poetry but I appreciated "The Hidden Life" and the message it conveyed to me. The visual imagery produced through the authors words made me think of the calmness of wheat fields blowing in the wind. This is certainly a beautiful poem and one which I will always remember. Excerpt: " So four long years his life went to and fro; Betwixt the scarlet gown and rough blue coat; The garret study and the wide floored barn; The wintry city and the sunny fields. In each his quiet mind was well content; because he was himself, where'er he was". Simply beautiful.

A very entertaining and enlightening read

A great book! An enlightening look at what goes into air traffic control, sometimes humorous, often times frightening. Not sure if knowing what goes on behind the scenes makes a person want to climb into an airplane. Mr. Larson's first hand account of what it takes to do the job is riveting, even to someone who knows nothing about planes or flying. A well written, entertaining read with a message.

I truly love vectoring airplanes, what a rush…

Where to start, first I loved the book, not an avid reader but couldn't put it down. Now that being said I am a little biased, I worked with David in Miami and am still working as a controller. For the English major purest, you'll be able to critique this book, whatever. For me, English (written) ain’t my strong suit, I had no problems. Now for the book, this book is a documentary, a comedy, a non-fiction glimpse into the field of Air traffic control. It gives a sense of what it takes to do the job, a strong sense of what a controller has to put up with on a daily basis. This book has special meaning to me because I have lived it, and currently still do. It brought back many fond memories from my time in Miami and many emotions from the loss experienced there. I recommend reading for anyone interested in aviation; it gives a look into the requirements of air traffic control, a look into the world of ATC. I recommend for any controller out there, humor and a reflection on our career, I recommend for FAA management (Washington, down), as a glimpse into what YOUR doing wrong, I recommend for congressional members, as a testament of how the WORKFORCE is treated and hopeful that they will FIX it (not holding my breath though)… What can I say, I liked the book, made my own corrections, took notes and placed names from my personal experiences. Too bad Dave punched out in 2005, the imposed work rules of 2006 and the downward spiral of staffing and treatment of the workforce, would have been another book, if he could keep his head from exploding… As mentioned I still do the job, but the facts the Dave brings up on the FAA’s misguided decisions to run this agency, I’m one of the experience that will very soon find the door. I can work another 5.5 years, but can’t take the daily BS of dealing with poor decisions, but man I’ll miss it, I truly love vectoring airplanes, what a rush…

To anyone who is at all capable of experiencing the pleasure of justice, it is gratifying to be able to make amends to a writer whom one has vaguely depreciated for some years. The faults and foibles of Matthew Arnold are no less evident to me now than twelve years ago, after my first admiration for him; but I hope that now, on re-reading some of his prose with more care, I can better appreciate his position. And what makes Arnold seem all the more remarkable is, that if he were our exact contemporary, he would find all his labour to perform again. A moderate number of persons have engaged in what is called "critical" writing, but no conclusion is any more solidly established than it was in 1865.

Book of critical essays by T.S. Eliot, published in 1920. In it, Eliot discusses several of the issues of modernist writings of the period. The best-known essay of the collection, "Tradition and the Individual Talent," puts forth Eliot's theory of a literary tradition that comprises the whole of European literature from Homer to the present and of the relationship of the individual poet to that tradition. Another notable essay is "Hamlet and His Problems," in which Eliot expresses his theory of the OBJECTIVE CORRELATIVE, a phrase he adapted from either George Santayana or Washington Allston. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Good edition of The Sacred Woods

Firstly, if you want an e book, do not buy this one. When I bought this book, I didn't know that the The Sacred Wood is out of copyright and that you can find it free on the internet. Project Gutenberg or bartleby.com will have one.
This is the book in which "Tradition and the Original Talent", Eliot's most famous essay is found. Also, Hamlet and his Problems, in which the poet proposes the "objective correlative" approach to poetry and literature is there.
There are no pages in the books, just the "loc". The interface between table of content and the essay is excellent however, and it did save me some time.
I wouldn't consider this book the best one you could buy, but it is not bad either.

But really, do not buy this book - get it for free.

Having discovered karting at the age of 14 during a family holiday, Prost progressed through motorsport's junior ranks, winning the French and European Formula Three championships, before joining the McLaren Formula One team in 1980 at the age of 24. In his six seasons with McLaren, Alain Prost won 30 races and three driving titles and in 1985 he became the first French World Champion. In 1986 he became the first back-to-back champion since Jack Brabham 26 years earlier. In 1987, his 28th Grand Prix victory beat Jackie Stewart's 14-year-old record.

However, in 1988 his brilliant new team mate Ayrton Senna won eight races and the driving title. Thus began the sensational rivalry that conspired to push two of the sport's greatest drivers to unprecedented heights of success and controversy, and the most bitter feud in Formula One history.

one of the best drivers in Formula 1

A really well written book about, I think, one of the best drivers in Formula 1.
It seemed to deal with his life in a very measured and correct way. There has been so much controversy about This man but I felt the book dealt with it in the best way possible as you heard from the other drivers, the managers and perhaps most importantly, the mechanics. All was positive.
I would highly recommend this book and also the amazing photography.

A small dissapointment...

Beware: this is a coffee table book (as one can see by the square format of the book). I knew that.

I knew the photos would be the strong point (and they are indee good - not spectacular, but good). But I did not think that the text would be so weak. Instead of a text completely written by seasoned journalist Maurice Hamilton, all we have are excerpts from interviews,

Excerpt from Automatic Sprinkler Protection

This book is based on a series of lectures delivered by the writer before the Insurance Library Association of Boston in the spring of 1913. These lectures covered the third year course in the subject of Fire Protection as outlined by the Insurance Institute of America. In this book the lecture notes have been greatly amplified in an effort to cover more thoroughly all phases of the subject.

There has been added an appendix in which all sprinkler heads, about which any information could be obtained, are listed alphabetically, and briefly described. Several years ago the writer listed and photographed the sprinkler heads shown in the first edition of the Crosby-Fiske Hand Book of Fire Protection these being taken largely from the collection owned by the Underwriters' Bureau of New England These were afterwards rephotographed and a number were added. The authors of the Hand Book have kindly loaned these cuts for use in the appendix. A number of new types and variations of old types have been added to this list but as the names and numbers as given in the Hand Book have become quite generally recognized throughout the country, care has been taken not to change these and fractional numbers have in some cases been used to designate sprinklers that have come to notice since these photographs were taken.

Having been a member of the Committee on Automatic Sprinklers of the National Fire Protection Association for several years, the writer has had an opportunity to keep in touch with all the late developments in this interrogation art.
