About the Author

Agatha Christie, the acknowledged ‘Queen of Detective Fiction’ (The Observer) was born in Torquay in 1890. During the First World War she worked as a hospital dispenser, and it was here that she gleaned the working knowledge of various poisons that was to prove so useful in her detective stories. Her first novel was The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which introduced Hercule Poirot to the world. This was published in 1920 (although in fact she had written it during the war) and was followed over the next six years by four more detective novels and a short story collection. However, it was not until the publication of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd that Agatha Christie’s reputation was firmly established. This novel, with its complex plot and genuinely shocking conclusion, attracted considerable public attention and has since been acknowledged by many experts as a masterpiece. In 1930 the sharp-witted spinster sleuth Miss Marple made her first appearance in Murder at the Vicarage. In all, Agatha Christie published 80 crime novels and short story collections. The brilliance of Christie’s plots, and her enduring appeal, have led to a number of dramatizations of her work on radio, television and film. Agatha Christie was awarded a CBE in 1956 and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1971. She died in 1976.

Classic Agatha Christie!

has finished listening to "Agatha Christie - The Lost Plays" released by BBC Radio.
This CD collection consists of three of Agatha Christie's full cast audio dramas by the original cast that had been previously "lost" until they were rediscovered somewhere in one of the BBC's dusty and moldy archives - and thank goodness. Agatha Christie certainly knew how to build horror and suspense as she so aptly does in "Butter in a Lordly Dish," in which a grieving widow gets revenge on the barrister who successfully prosecuted her husband by playing on his weakness for beautiful women. In "Murder in the Mews," there is almost a perfect murder, but Poirot unravels it with his usual elegant style. "Personal Call" is a murder mystery wrapped up in a ghost story that haunts the listener at the very end.
Resounding and confounding mysteries all!

About the Author
Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was born in Yorkshire. She was the third of six children and the oldest of the three well-known novelist and poet Brontë sisters. Brontë published several novels; however Jane Eyre remains her most famous literary work.

American novelist Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) is most famous for the novel Little Women, a semi-autobiographical tale, set in Alcott’s childhood home of Concord, Massachusetts. Throughout her lifetime, Alcott published more than 30 books and collections of stories.

Jane Austen (1775–1817) is one of the most celebrated authors of the English language. Her fiction is known for its witty satires on English society. Austen wrote anonymously during her life and wasn't widely recognized as a great English writer until after her death in 1817.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was an English playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden (published in 1911), A Little Princess (published in 1905), and Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885–86). She was born in Cheetham, England and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian author best known for her series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, which was an immediate success. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 500 short stories and poems. She was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Amazingly beautiful gift set

I absolutely love the Word Cloud Classics by Canterbury Classics. Although all of these books are no longer under copyright, and are free digitally in whatever e-book format you prefer, the Word Cloud Classics have obviously been designed with thought and care. This set contains eight books, half of which are written by Jane Austen, of course, and is well worth the price (especially if it's still steeply discounted like it was when I purchased it). The books are housed in a thick, lavender cardboard box and protected by a sturdy plastic covering. Every book has the burnished leather cover, covered in important quotes and motifs from the particular book with a longer quote on the back cover, and each has its own distinctive, colorful flyleaf. What's cool is you also get a bookmark with the titles burnished on one side and every flyleaf pattern on the other.

The one complaint I have is that while the plastic covering is great as a dustcover, it does require you to slip all of the books out to get at one. However, this is a minor inconvenience, and I wholeheartedly recommend this set. You won't find any cheap, photocopies from Word Cloud Classics!

I purchased these for my 12 year old Granddaughter as she "loves" to read and wanted these to keep. They are lovely and she was so appreciative They are beautifully presented yet not over done. Definitely a keepsake. I would recommend them for anyone's library and as a gift for those who appreciate fine things.

Reading and writing letters punctuated the rhythms of Dickens's day. 'I walk about brimful of letters', he told a friend. He claimed to write 'at the least, a dozen a day'. Sometimes it was a chore but more often a pleasure: an outlet for high spirits, sparkling wit, and caustic commentary - always as seen through his highly individual and acutely observing eye.

These 450 letters, drawn from a total of 14,000, are well chosen and annotated, but the print is very small. Dickens is not one of the great confessional correspondents. In his energetic, often hasty responses to ideas and people, projects and places, debts and death, his tone varies from chummy to fawning. He describes the genesis of his novels, creation of characters, choice of titles; his editing of periodicals and performing in amateur theatricals. He attends a public hanging: “I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits.” He writes that “invention seems the easiest thing in the world. But the difficulty of going at what I call a rapid pace is prodigious.” He exclaims that he’s breaking his heart over the death of Little Nell “and cannot bear to finish it.” A near-fatal railway accident throws him into shock: “I was in the carriage that did not go over the bridge, but which caught on one side and hung suspended over the ruined parapet.” Essential for those interested in Dickens but not riveting for the casual reader. --Jeffrey Meyers

Jenny Hartley, Professor of English Literature, Roehampton University

Jenny Hartley is Professor of English Literature at Roehampton University. She is the author of two books on British women's writing from the Second World War, and The Reading Groups Book, a pioneering survey of reading groups. Her most recent book, Charles Dickens and the House of Fallen Women, published by Methuen in 2008, was picked Guardian 'Book of the Week' and described as 'brilliant' by Claire Tomalin. For the last ten years she has been a leading member of the Prison Reading Groups project.

Beaten with a Sledge-Hammer

The sparkling letters of a great author are always well worth reading. This is especially true of Charles Dickens who was an incessant traveler, kind friend to many, and a close observer of the social issues of his age. Not to mention often funny.

Here one can glean insights on writing for publication, on forms of thank you and bereavement notes, on career advice, on travel, and on direct but polite ways to say no.

In these letters one often comes across the unexpected line that makes reading a joy. For example, from a letter dated November 5, 1841, "In this kind of work the object is,--not to tell everything, but to select the striking points and beat them into the page with a sledge-hammer."

Those interested in obtaining a biography of Charles Dickens have many excellent options. One from last year, on his early years, that I would recommend is "Becoming Dickens" by Robert Douglas-Fairhurst.

Poorly bound book of great letters

First, no complaints about the contents. It is a joy and a privilege to read these letters.

The letters are nicely laid out on the page, though the footnotes are at the end of each letter, and thus one often has to turn a page or two to refer to them.

Now for the quality of the physical book. The paper is acid-free, bright white, and the print is of a nice, uniform blackness. But the quality of the paper seems to be one step above construction paper. The binding is a disgrace. It is disheartening for the future of physical books that OUP would issue a hardcover so poorly bound that it will not lie open flat on a desk. The physical quality of this book is an insult to the great writing of Charles Dickens.

Finally, Ms. Hartley seems to have done an admirable job of selecting and editing the letters, but she should still have had the modesty to title the book Selected Letters, not The Selected Letters.

In Dickens novels, his favorite protagonists distinguish themselves by remaining cheerful through adversity. I thought Dickens letters would reveal if his own character mirrored that of his protagonists. Seems it does.

President Roosevelt early appreciated the fact that great as were the engineering difficulties to be surmounted in the making of the Panama Canal, the difficulties of sanitation would be fully as great, if not greater, and, before the first Canal Commission was appointed, he told a committee of the American Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the New York Academy of Medicine, consisting of Doctor Welch and Doctor Osier of Baltimore, Doctor Musser of Philadelphia, Doctor Bryant of New York, and the writer, that it was his intention to seek for the best man in the world for the task, to pay him whatever would be necessary, and to give him full power. Fortunately, the man needed was found in the person of Colonel (now General) Gorgas, fresh from his triumphant cleaning up of Havana with the consequent elimination of yellow fever and malaria.

This book was first published in the 1920 so it was written by people who had first hand knowledge of Panama before the Americans invested millions to improve sanitation on the isthmus.

These authors also interviewed and consulted people who had first hand or fresh anecdotal information of what Panama was like before America improved sanitation there and eliminated both malaria and yellow fever.

The scourge of Panama had long been malaria and yellow fever. Panama had such a bad reputation that some sea captains refused to take their ships there. Those diseases and very poor sanitation were the major issues that defeated the French attempt to build a canal.

Part of America's success was luck, fortuitous research conducted in Cuba and other places led to more knowledge and breakthroughs that were quickly implemented in Panama. They worked.

The workforce was stabilized as better trained men were now willing to work on the canal project.

About the Author
Fabio Chaddad is associate professor of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri, USA with joint appointment at Insper Institute of Education and Research in São Paulo, Brazil. He currently teaches strategic management, organizational economics and agribusiness management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is also affiliated with the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL), which delivers executive education programs for cooperative leaders, and the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, which supports research, teaching, curriculum development, and outreach in agricultural entrepreneurship. Fabio’s research activities focus on the economics and management of user-owned and controlled organizations and inter-firm collaborative arrangements in the global agrifood system. He has a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri, a Master’s degree in Agribusiness Management from the University of São Paulo College of Economics, Business and Accounting and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of São Paulo College of Agriculture.

androidlike disgust for Hickman lines

The Boy in the Mirror by Tom Preston is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in one go with a significant amount of rapt on an August morning. Because I was offered and agreed to read this book some months ago, I had filed it in my memory and my Kindle library as "Non-fiction, short, cancer."

Prior to my meeting him, my boyfriend Gabe had went through ICE treatment, multiple rounds of chemo, and two stem cell transplants to treat Hodgkins' lymphoma. This book provided a British-made, somewhat lonelier, but no less grievous window onto what he had went through before the mild, maintenance-based chemo that I would witness. A lot of the data translates effectively into what he's remembered out loud (preference for tuna, oralwash, hatred for afterhours hospital noise, androidlike disgust for Hickman lines, guilt at not being 'there' when friends and family would visit) and what I've seen (a grey cloud passing over a friend or family member's face when Gabe would be confounded by a cancer-related memory, looking at photos taken during treatment, loose camraderie with other people in remission and treatment). Other than that, the first-person tone gives a feeling of hand-grasping, shoulder-throttling confrontation.

Right in the beginning I was ready to put the book down and walk away but I am so glad that I didn't. I had a hard time figuring out where this book was going to go and why there wasn't more about the main character. It wasn't like any book I have ever read before. Instead of having a book about a man with cancer it was pretty much about cancer. What I mean about that is instead of him describing his age, who he is, what he studied in school, what he felt about things going on in his life it was more of what the cancer was doing to him from how he found out, to the medications that he was bombarded with, what they did to him and how the physical reaction were because of the chemo and other medications. I am so glad that at the end we were able to find out after his 4 month horrible ordeal he is now in remission.

A hard read, but well worth it

I have had family and friends battle cancer. Some have survived, others haven't. This wasn't an easy book to read. But it is one of the most honest, compelling, heartwarming and heartbreaking books I have ever read.

It isn't a long book, so I read it in one sitting. The language takes a bit of getting used to as it is written as if it's you who is experiencing the tests, injections, sickness which comes with going through chemotherapy.

The author hasn't sugar coated anything. He is telling it as it is, giving you the good, bad and the very ugly sides of this awful disease and the treatment needed to help sufferers have a fighting chance. It's not nice, it is technical at times, and you feel as if you are right there with him. But it is something I will forever be glad I read.

She is the coauthor of Extinction: The Causes and Consequences of the Disappearance of Species and The Dominant Animal: Human Evolution and the Environment. Paul R. Ehrlich is the Bing Professor of Population Studies and the president of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University. Emphasizing Solutions to a Tragic Tale of Loss

There should have been a subtitle to this book, such as "Stopping the Loss" because it not only illustrates to breadth and speed with which we are permanently losing important biodiversity, but also addresses how we could be stopping it. Recent studies chronicle the dramatic decline of animals on earth, even if humanity has not chronicled the extinction (or recognition) of every vanished species. This graphic book is special in that it:
- Is the first to show how loss of biodiversity is tied to human expansion;
- points out the importance of not just species but population extinctions
- illustrates the global scale of conservation issues, from Zimbabwe and China to the US and Australia.

-Graphically illustrates what humanity is losing.
- Shows how ecotourism, new agricultural practices, even hunting sometimes, help save biodiversity.

Important and Beautiful!

A surprisingly beautiful book considering the ominous title. John Holdren, President Obama’s science advisor, criticized the Pope’s Encyclical for being too dismissive of “the role of the size of the human population in …crowding out the rest of creation.” THE ANNIHILATION OF NATURE is a magnificent book that makes no such mistake. It summarizes the consequences of humanity’s launching of the sixth mass extinction, the first since an extra-terrestrial body wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. With a series of glorious photographs and graphic stories it shows what we’re losing from the two best-known groups of animals: mammals and birds. It also frankly discusses the only basic cure to the extinction crisis: “shrinkage of Earth’s human population and reduction of per capita consumption by the already rich.” Perhaps most important it emphasizes a problem few are aware of, a massive wave of population extinction. It is destroying the critical natural services we all depend upon. Professor Ceballos and his colleagues have done us all a great favor – supplying a beautiful book that carries a critical message. This book will save you both time and money.

This reprint of the 1909 classic should be on the shelf of every serious homesteader. Farming is hard work, and this book will teach you how to save both time and money to get the job done. In this little gem you'll learn how to make your own tools for your workshop, how to build things for around the house, for the barns, and for your livestock, in addition to other devices for your garden and orchard, including a section that discusses fence-making and gate-making. Several pages are devoted to building a farmhouse (including the floor plan for my wife's "dream house"), barns, and other outbuildings. This book also makes for very entertaining reading. Peppered throughout are worthwhile quotes from famous (and not-so-famous) farmers from the past. I'm glad I found this book. I hope you will be, too!

Book is worth its weight in GOLD!

I bought this book on 29-Feb-00 because I am inheriting a farm in West Virginia. I read through it last night and am 110% convinced that the ideas in this book will cut my workload in half and make my life better when I move to the farm. I have placed 27 yellow stickies in this book; one for each idea that I will be able to use in the coming year. If you own a farm, buy this book!

Pure practicality & lots of nostalgia

Handy Farm Devices is a really great book if you'd like to read about early 20th century practical living. There's no fluff here; just practical tips for simple living, and lots of good ideas for fixing/making things around the house.
