Understanding Tolstoy, by Andrew D. Kaufman

Understanding Tolstoy recreates Tolstoy’s lifelong artistic and spiritual journey, taking readers to the core of the writer’s world through nuanced close readings of his major novels and novellas. Andrew D. Kaufman’s broad and accessible analysis of Tolstoy’s work speaks to the ways in which Tolstoy, despite living in a manner far removed from the experiences of most modern-day Americans, is still applicable and contemporary.

From a reconstruction of Olenin’s search for truth in The Cossacks to an illuminating analysis of Hadji-Murat’s tragic last stand, Understanding Tolstoy brings to life the fascinating parallels between Tolstoy’s personal quest and his characters’ journeys. Whether writing about the ballrooms and battlefields of War and Peace or the spectrum of sexual and spiritual attachments in Anna Karenina, Tolstoy emerges as a vital, searching artist who continually grows and surprises us, yet is driven by a single, unchanging belief in universal human truths.

Understanding Tolstoy is a treasure trove of critical and philosophical insights that will appeal to Tolstoy aficionados of all kinds, from advanced scholars to undergraduate students. The book offers an eminently readable guide to those entering Tolstoy’s world for the first time or the tenth, and it invites them to grapple alongside the writer and his characters with the most urgent existential questions of our time, and all times.

Review

“What pulled me to Understanding Tolstoy with enormous force were two things. First, Andrew D. Kaufman’s mastery of the whole Tolstoyan world, in both its artistic and critical texts, is quite impressive. I was particularly moved by the description of his experience at Tolstoy’s estate. Second, Kaufman is very personable as a writer, the kind you would like to get to know and talk Tolstoy with.” —Irwin Weil, professor emeritus, Slavic languages and literatures, Northwestern University

“Is there room for yet another book on Tolstoy? The answer is a resounding yes! Andrew D. Kaufman has something of his own to say about Tolstoy, and it’s worth listening to. The key word for describing Kaufman’s approach is relevance. He believes that reading Tolstoy can help us now, in the twenty-first century, to understand ourselves and the world. Kaufman’s conviction and convincing argument are admirable.” —Hugh McLean, professor emeritus, Russian literature, University of California, Berkeley

Understanding Tolstoy and Yourself
By Richard F.
You need to know that Andy is my son. Having said that, you also need to know that I will not perjure myself for anyone, even my son.
Here is my reaction to the book. You may be interested to know that a major publishing house found this book so intriguing that Andy is half-way through another book on Tolstoy that is under contract with this publishing house.
Here is my review.
I enjoyed this personal conversation with the author of Understanding Tolstoy immensely. He brought Tolstoy to life once again as I recalled each work he discussed. His knowledge of the works of Tolstoy and of Tolstoy himself provided new and exciting insights into one of the world's greatest writers and into the existential issues that Tolstoy dealt with and that each of us deals with frequently. Each chapter stands by itself and adds additional insight and introspection. The book does not need to be read sequentially or in a short prior of time. I read a chapter or two, put it down, returned to read another chapter and another. I wished it were longer. I'll read it again. It's that good!

The book to read on Tolstoy
By Sharon Leiter
Understanding Tolstoy is scholarly, perceptive, beautifully written - and revolutionary in the cyclical way of intellectual trends. Eschewing the "isms" that stalk current academic criticism and the tendency to take a miniscule piece of the painting and analyze it to death, Andrew Kaufman invites us to look at the whole glorious landscape of Tolstoy's fictional oeuvre. Neither ponderous nor airborne with empty generalizations, his book takes us from The Cossacks to Hadji Murat, making probing excursions on the way into Tolstoy's masterpieces, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Kaufman gives us a Tolstoy who cares for nothing less than understanding why we live and the power of art to unveil the mystery, a writer whose ideas are inextricable from his art. His study is a gift to both scholars and ordinary readers seeking a key - elegant but by no means contrived - to the work of this great Russian writer. - SL, professor of literature, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Virginia.

Excerpt from The Boy Scouts Book of Stories

Something over a year ago the Electric Railway Journal began the publication of its monthly "Mechanical and Engineering Numbers." The purpose of these has been to furnish articles of a character particularly helpful to the men who are responsible for the upkeep of the physical equipment of an electric railway property. Overhead line construction, tracks, buildings, power plants, substations, shops and rolling stock and its equipment have all been kept in mind.

Arrangements were made with several specialists in different parts of the electric railway field for series of articles covering the fundamentals of track, power transmission, car equipment, car bodies and power plant operation; these were in addition to numerous articles on details of practice in the several lines mentioned. While all of the series are not yet complete, they have proved to date so valuable and comprehensive that the publishers of the paper have decided to reprint a number of the articles in the several series, particularly for the benefit of those who have not had the opportunity to read them month by month. Space limitations have prevented the reprinting of the entire groups of articles but a careful selection has been made of those which seem to have greatest immediate practical value. Readers of this volume are referred to the original series in each of the fields if further details are desired.

The authors of the articles reprinted are all qualified by practical experience and theoretical study to furnish the kind of material desired by the workers in the "practical" departments of the electric railways. For want of a better word the term "practical" is used to designate those who have to do with physical equipment. Mr. Cram is in daily contact with the way and structure problems of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit System and had a wide experience before joining the staff of the B. R. T. Mr. Harte, construction engineer of the Connecticut Company, has particularly to do with new work on a large railway system, being especially interested in power transmission problems.

Too old for most scouts
By Aaron Wyckoff
Originally published in 1920, this volume is an anthology of eighteen stories written by a range of authors. Some of the authors are still well-known, such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Booth Tarkington, O. Henry, Mark Twain, and Robert Lewis Stevenson, while many of the others are not.

There is no question that the stories were carefully selected to appeal to boys, but they appeal to the boys of nearly a hundred years ago (and some of the stories were already decades old by that point). The writing style is far different from what most modern readers expect, and many would find them long, over-written, and lacking in excitement. This is not to say that they are bad stories. However, only a handful are likely to still appeal to the boy of today.

If stories from the late 1800s to early 1900s interest you, this book may be ideal. But if you are looking for something more exciting, or something that can be shared at a campfire, you will need to keep looking.

District Clerks Office.

Be it remembered, that on the 2d day of October, A.D. 1829, in the fifty-fourth year of the Independence of the United States of America. Flagg & Gould, of the said district, has deposited in this Office the title of a book, the right whereof they claim as Proprietors, in the words following, to wit: "Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews, by Robert Lowth, D.D. Lord Bishop of London Translated from the original Latin by G. Gregory, F.A.S. A new Edition with Notes by Calvin E. Stowe, A.M. 'Opus enim de Sacra Poesi absolutissimum, nemo est, opinor, in his studiis versatus, qui non perlegerit; nemo, cui non summam admirationem attulerit cum argumenti dignitas, et eruditi auctoris singulare judicium, tum Latini sermonis venustas ac nitor.'" In conformity to the Act of the Congress of the United States, entitled, "An Act for the encouragement of Learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned:" and also to an act entitled, "An act supplementary to an act, entitled, An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned; and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving and etching historical and other prints."

A pioneering scholarly work
By Shalom Freedman
It is difficult for me to imagine anyone reading through this work who is not a scholar of Hebrew poetry.

The work is of great historical importance as it defines as principal device of Hebrew poetry, the device of parallelism.

However refinements and qualifications of Lowth's thesis are made by more modern scholars , two of the most well- known of whom are, Robert Alter and James Kugel.

First of many favorites by this author
By Deanna Mosier
I actually listened to this book, and then bought the public domain kindle version. Four girls go to Chataqua camp and come home very different than when they went. I have loved everything I've read by this author and named my Kindle after her. There is the Chataqua series and Ester Reid series and other books as well that I have yet to read. The stories were written in the early 20th century and show how people of different classes were treated. The main character(s) are searching for a better way -how can they lead a better life, whether poor or rich. I wish my words could express my heart --but these books were very enjoyable and I look forward to reading everything she has written. Pansy is also Isabella MacDonald Alden.

Beautifully detailed setting of Chautaugua Institute
By A Customer
Millions of visitors of all ages come to Chautaugua Institute. This book is a must for all of them who want to know what it was like at the beginning. It describes in beautiful detail the historical setting of the second summer at Fair Point,NY. The year was 1875 and the multitudes slept in tents or commuted from Mayville by boat. President U.S. Grant made a visit. It is not about girls. This is the story of four young women who come in search of amusement or information, but return home with more than they ever imagined. Now I look forward to reading the sequels: "The Chautaugua Girls at Home" and "Four Mothers at Chautaugua".

No other book even comes close in this topic.
By Valerie
This book shows how to make every kind of pot, pan, still, kettle, teakettle or brewry gadget that you would want to make out of copper. Big and small. Household and industrial.

Although, dealing exclusively with copper, most of the techniques shown can be applied to other common sheet metals.

This book doesn't deal with raising from the whole, as in silversmithing, but with piecing something together, and using dovetail joints along with soldering to make a whole.

Lots of woodcut illustrations and concise text. There is some obscure and obsolete terminology; such as 'spelter'. Do you know what that is?

Spinning, dies, power presses and such are not delt with in this book. Neither are the common sheet metal gadgets and tools, such as slip rolls, brakes, shears, roll crimps, and such. Hand hammering, stakes, charcoal firepots; that is what you will find in here. This is like blacksmithing for copper.

If you are interested in working with copper sheet, or brass,I have not seen another book out there as good as this one. Especially if you want to make utilitarian objects. The book is packed with information.

If you are interested in artistic copper forming you will still find the basic techniques in here as to how to work the copper. But there isn't much in the way of artistic design, like how to make a copper rooster weather vane.

Deserves much consideration
By Mark A. Kingston
This book I believe deserves much praise. The Astragal Press have here reprinted a book written in 1893 which highlights skills that in my part of the world have essentially disappeared. With the technological progress that has sweep across the western world since this book was written you would I suspect have to travel to India, Iran or maybe Eygpt to see this sort of hand skill in use today.
In the authors day copper was the metal of choice for making the Glue Pots and Tea kettles, the Stock Pots, Frying Pans, Tallow Coppers and Brewing Coppers to name just a small aray of items listed in this book. Today the vast bulk of these would be manufactured from either Stainless Steel or may Aluminium.
So the author desribes with words and some outstanding drawings how these items could have been constructed during this period. Pattern Development of some of the items is also covered. The universal subjects of Soldering and Brazing do get good coverage as does the subject of Tinning a copper to be used for cooking purposes. He has included formula for working out some of the blanks required to start from and some good descriptions of the hand tools and stakes etc. to form the work with and on.
A previous reviewer has said that this book is mainly a historical text and of little practical worth today. This is valid only up to a point. It is my belief that this book does have a practical worth and anyone who is looking at this book will be looking precisely for what this book delivers on. That is that this book is about crafting and the art of working metal. The skill to plastically deform a metal to a desired shape is very well covered here and I think that there is a movement, even if a small one, to relearn some of the skills lost in the last few decades with the march of technology. I work in a sheetmetal fabrication shop and no one has these skills anymore and some will say "so what!". But when a job comes in with compounding curved surfaces it is to books from this generation that we must return.
The book itself has been well manufactured though I would have perferred a hard cover. Both the Table of Contents and the Index are clear and concise.
I therefore give this book 5 stars and believe that if you want to do some serious metal working in your job or at home as a hobby then this book will serve you very well.

Not a DIY guide
By Al Zymerz
This is a fascinating insight into the climate in which coppersmiths worked in the 19th Century, and the techniques they used. It is of limited utility in the 21st Century for somebody wanting tips on repairing domestic copperware.

As collectors of old kitchenware, we have found the book useful in helping to assess the age and quality of pieces we come across by better understanding makers' techniques.

In short, a fascinating addition to the bookshelf, but not a DIY guide.

South Toward Home: Travels in Southern Literature, by Margaret Eby

A literary travelogue into the heart of classic Southern literature.

What is it about the South that has inspired so much of America's greatest literature? And why, when we think of Flannery O'Connor or William Faulkner or Harper Lee, do we think of them not just as writers, but as Southern writers? In South Toward Home, Margaret Eby―herself a Southerner―travels through the South in search of answers to these questions, visiting the hometowns and stomping grounds of some of our most beloved authors. From Mississippi (William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright) to Alabama (Harper Lee, Truman Capote) to Georgia (Flannery O'Connor, Harry Crews) and beyond, Eby looks deeply at the places that these authors lived in and wrote about. South Toward Home reveals how these authors took the people and places they knew best and transmuted them into lasting literature.

Side by side with Eby, we meet the man who feeds the peacocks at Andalusia, the Georgia farm where Flannery O'Connor wrote her most powerful stories; we peek into William Faulkner's liquor cabinet to better understand the man who claimed civilization began with distillation and the "postage stamp of native soil" that inspired him; and we go in search of one of New Orleans's iconic hot dog vendors, a job held by Ignatius J. Reilly in John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. From the library that showed Richard Wright that there was a way out to the courtroom at the heart of To Kill a Mockingbird, Eby grapples with a land fraught with history and mythology, for, as Eudora Welty wrote, "One place understood helps us understand all places better."

Combining biographical detail with expert criticism, Eby delivers a rich and evocative tribute to the literary South.

Review
“Well-informed and lively…. This young author is unafraid to hunt big game…. [Eby] demonstrates apt critical insights and offers biographical tidbits from a thorough reading of the authors’ life stories…. This reviewer would happily read a sequel.” (Howell Raines - New York Times Book Review)

“[A] fascinating paean to the people and places that inspired some of the most revered chroniclers of life below the Mason-Dixon line…. Eby lyrically uncovers a bit of the magic that makes a southern writer southern.” (Josh Steele - Entertainment Weekly)

“[An] engaging journey…. Eby offers something you can’t get on tours.” (Anushah Jiwani - Oxford American)

“As Elif Batuman did for Russian literature in The Possessed and Olivia Laing did for alcoholic writers in The Trip to Echo Spring, so Margaret Eby does for Southern writers in South Toward Home.” (Michael Bourne, The Millions)

“A delightful love letter to the South and…an apt reminder that the South is no literary backwater but a world of letters all its own.” (Publishers Weekly)

“An illuminating journey to the homes, towns, and landscapes that nurtured ten Southern writers…. Eby brings a fine sensibility to her readings…and, in polished prose, offers a fresh look at their lives and literary legacies.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A sweetly personal yet embracingly informative book…. Eby entices us to enjoy their work either for the first time or once again.” (Booklist, Starred review)

“Margaret Eby brings an enviable ease and intelligence to this exploration of ten essential Southern writers and the landscapes from which their books were formed. Her travels should offer you either an excellent introduction to these authors or a bracing reminder of their worth, and indeed, turning these pages, I recalled why I first fell in love with those whose books I know well and was persuaded to reinvestigate those whose books I don't.” (Kevin Brockmeier)

Look Southward for some Answers
By Margie Read
What a splendid review of some of the South's best known writers. As has been pointed out "some of us can read; some of us can even write" and the discussion by Eby of some of these Southern writers is of value to those who want to know more about them and their work. The book should be especially valuable to those who teach. Solid evaluations are made and comments that lead to a better understanding of the works of those writers included. Any teacher of American /Southern Literature should have this book in his or her classroom. No one can come up with a reason why Southerners seem better writers than those from other sections of the United States, but Eby comes as close as we have seen to establishing some of the reasons. Highly recommended. .

A great way to evoke the literature of particular southern places and the writers that described them!
By D. Locicero
Full disclosure: I received this as a Goodreads giveaway, but that in no way affects the review which follows.

What is it about southern writers and southern literature that create a unique literary genre? Answering that question is the purpose of South Toward Home: Travels in Southern Literature by Margaret Eby. (And, yes, the title was inspired by Willie Morris' 1967 memoir, North Toward Home.)

Let me begin by saying that both the Introduction and the Coda are well worth reading - don't be tempted to skip over them! Here are two quotes from the introduction to whet your appetite:

First, "Southern writing at its loftiest is a literature of opposition. It is a rebuff, in equal measure, to those who imagine the region as a place of shoeless yokels, and those who mythologize it as one where sweet-faced, big-haired debutantes in hoop skirts dole out petit fours, mind their manners, and maintain deep roots to their family elders."

And from the following page, "What makes a southern writer a southern writer is not just the circumstances of his or her birth, but a fierce attachment to a particular place, and a commitment to exploring its limits in his or her work."

On a journey following several of those notable southern writers through Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and (New Orleans) Lousiana, Eby fleshes out her ideas about the connections between the writers she has chosen to include and special places in their writing lives. As someone with southern roots, I appreciated her careful crafting of the descriptions that draw the reader into her thesis, and I believe she supports it well. There really do appear to be tangible connections between particular places and these writers' affinities for them. What a well-written and enjoyable book!

My recommendation: Go ahead; read this book -- and delve into the southern soul.

What defines a Southern writer? -- approached through ten Southern authors and visits to their hometowns
By R. M. Peterson
Margaret Eby addresses a matter that has occupied many other literary critics: what defines a Southern writer? Eby's thesis is that "what makes a Southern writer a Southern writer is not just the circumstances of his or her birth but a fierce attachment to a particular place, and a commitment to exploring its limits in his or her work." She illustrates that thesis through traveling to the hometowns of ten famous writers from the Deep South. SOUTH TOWARD HOME adopts a singular and useful approach to the question of what defines a Southern writer, and in Eby's hands it turns out to be an engaging and informative book on the literature of the South.

The ten writers around whom Eby organizes her book are Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Harry Crews, Harper Lee and Truman Capote, John Kennedy Toole, and Barry Hannah and Larry Brown. Visiting their homes takes her to Jackson and Oxford in Mississippi, Milledgeville and Bacon County in Georgia, Monroeville in Alabama, and New Orleans.

The reader learns a lot about Eby's authors, in a relaxed, non-pedantic fashion. I already knew a fair amount about Faulkner and O'Connor, but even with them I gained a richer understanding. I found Eby's discussions of Welty and Toole especially informative. (I finished the book with a resolve to read more of Welty's novels soon, and perhaps re-read "Confederacy of the Dunces", about which I was less than enthusiastic the first time around.)

Eby's prose is ideal for a book of this sort. It is smooth and flowing, never calling attention to itself.

Ultimately, I doubt that SOUTH TOWARD HOME will end the musings about what it is that defines a Southern writer -- though I am certain that Eby, who comes across as even-keeled, is not so presumptuous or arrogant to pretend that her book is the be-all and end-all. (I tend to think that the matter is related to the overwhelming influence of Faulkner on matters literary, and he just happened to hail from the South.) In the course of the book, Eby does offer reflections from other writers on the subject, two of which from Eudora Welty are worth repeating:

* "'Regional,' I think, is a careless term, as well as a condescending one, because what it does is fail to differentiate between the localized raw material of life and its outcome as art. 'Regional' is an outsider's term; it has no meaning for the insider who is doing the writing, because as far as he knows he is simply writing about life."

* "[Southern writers] do not need reminding of what our subject is. It is humankind, and we are all part of it. When we write about people, black or white, in the South or anywhere, if our stories are worth the reading, we are writing about everybody."

THE STORY OF AMERICA'S FIRST MODERN TRUE SPORTS CAR
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (1958): “ For nearly a quarter of a century the American highway was without a domestic automobile which could accurately be labeled a true sports car. The names Stutz, Mercer, Dusenberg, Kissell and a host of others—including some as recent as Cord and Auburn have almost vanished from the American automotive vocabulary. The names and the magic they invoked are almost meaningless to the present generation of Americans.
No native name to replace them appeared until 1952 when the Chevrolet Division of the General Motors Corporation gave birth to the Corvette …”

The Beat Generation FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Angelheaded Hipsters, by Rich Weidman

(FAQ). The Beat Generation FAQ is an informative and entertaining look at the enigmatic authors and cutting-edge works that shaped this fascinating cultural and literary movement. Disillusioned with the repression and conformity encompassing post-World War II life in the United States, the Beat writers sought creative alternatives to the mind-numbing banality of modern culture. Beat Generation writers were no strangers to controversy: Both Allen Ginsberg's prophetic, William Blakean-style poem "Howl" (1956) and William S. Burroughs' groundbreaking novel Naked Lunch (1959) led to obscenity trials, while Jack Kerouac's highly influential novel On the Road (1957) was blamed by the establishment for corrupting the nation's youth and continues to this day to serve as a beacon of hipster culture and the bohemian lifestyle. The Beat writers shared a vision for a new type of literature, one that escaped the boundaries of academia and employed an organic use of language, inspired by the spontaneity and improvisational nature of jazz music and abstract expressionism (Kerouac coined this writing style "spontaneous prose"). In search of deeper meaning, Beat Generation writers experimented not only with language but also with spirituality, art, drugs, sexuality, and unconventional lifestyles. Although the movement as a whole flamed out quickly in the early 1960s, replaced by the onset of the hippie counterculture, the Beats made an indelible mark on the nation's consciousness and left a long-lasting influence on its art and culture. This book details the movement its works, creative forces, and its legacy.

Review
''[The Beat Generation FAQ] thoroughly covers the basics: the Beat movement's beginnings, influential thought-leaders, major milestones, and, ultimately, its demise. Author Rich Weidman's reader-friendly prose and organized structure makes it easy to reference, and articles are informative without being weighty or overly academic. The basics, however, are just the tip of the iceberg...The short-lived Beat movement changed the fabric of popular culture in ways that reverberate through time to the present day; yet due to both its short time span and the experimental (and, at times, inaccessible) nature of the major works makes it a subject about which few people know. The Beat Generation FAQ clears up some of the fog around the movement, and author Rich Weidman conveys an incredible amount of fact in an accessible and enjoyable way.'' --Rebeat Magazine

''Though not a first-hand account, The Beat Generation FAQ makes it obvious that the author did his homework, especially as evidenced by an extensive bibliography, recommended ''essential reading'' lists, and the last section called ''Each Stolen Moment: A Beat Generation Timeline.'' ... As a whole, this book is a nostalgic adventure for those who were present at the time, but can also be an educational tool for those who weren't and care to familiarize themselves with the Beat legacy.'' --San Francisco Book Review

Great Resource on Beat Generation
By Jym Cherry
Books in Backbeat Books FAQ series are a little different to review than a more conventionally formatted book. By definition books in the FAQ series are more of a resource guide, like the internet analog of a series of common questions on a subject with a quick fact filled summation of the question at hand, and Rich Weidman’s provides exactly that some succinct information in “The Beat Generation FAQ”.

If you’re a fan of The Beats (such as I am) and their writings you may think you know everything on this literary movement, but Weidman has done his homework and has information that is previously unknown or lesser known, such as the influence of hobo writers such as Jack Black, author of “You Can’t Win” (1936). There are chapters on both the major and minor players in The Beats story, the major personalities such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S, Burroughs, Gregory Corso et al, as well as minor characters such as Herbert Hunke. “The Beat Generation FAQ” delves into the mostly overlooked group in The Beats, the women. Weidman gives them equal time with the men and which were as important to the group as the men, albeit more in ways of supporting the men and their ambitions but these group of women would later write their own books, not only of their time with the men of The Beat Generation but also their own artistic works.

Weidman also explores the process behind Kerouac’s, “On The Road”, which brought up some things I hadn‘t picked up on before. Ginsberg’s, “Howl”, and Burroughs‘, “Naked Lunch”. It also takes a look at the obscenity trial the publication of “Howl” elicited. It also delves into these writers body of work as a whole, if you need a quick overview of their work here it is. Weidman also gets into the reaction to The Beats from their detractors to those they influenced, i.e., Bob Dylan, The Doors, and their influence on other mediums of the day from exploitation movies made promising to expose ‘the inside story of The Beat Generation”, to the present day, which has seen films that are more historically accurate on incidents in The Beats world as well as films made of Kerouac’s “On The Road” and “Big Sur”.

A couple things that are minor shortcomings is that reading straight through and not as a reference source there are some redundancies. The other is that Weidman omits the death of Gerard Kerouac, Jack Kerouac’s older brother who died at age nine and affected Kerouac in his perspective on life and writing.

Overall “The Beat Generation FAQ” is a well written and informative look at The Beat Generation and whether you’re already an aficionado or are just getting into The Beats this is a book you’ll want to read. Rich Weidman is also the author of “The Doors FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Kings of Acid Rock (Faq Series).

Immanent Distance: Poetry and the Metaphysics of the Near at Hand (Poets on Poetry), by Bruce Bond

In these essays, Bruce Bond interrogates the commonly accepted notion that all poetry since modernism tends toward one of two traditions: that of a more architectural sensibility with its resistance to metaphysics, and that of a latter-day Romantic sensibility, which finds its authority in a metaphysics authenticated by the individual imagination. Poetry, whether self-consciously or not, has always thrived on the paradox of the distant in the immanent and the other in the self; as such, it is driven by both a metaphysical hunger and a resistance to metaphysical certainty. Hidden resources of being animate the language of the near, just as near things beckon from an elusive and inarticulate distance. Bond revalidates the role of poetry and, more broadly, of the poetic imagination as both models for and embodiments of a transfigurative process, an imperfectly mimetic yet ontological engendering of consciousness at the limits of a language that must—if cognizant of its psychological, ethical, and epistemological summons—honor that which lies beyond it.

beautifully rendered, and never prolix
By William G. Wright
This is perhaps the most erudite collection of essays about poetry I've encountered in recent years. It is assiduous, graceful, beautifully rendered, and never prolix; even so, Bond never enervates the essays through oversimplifications and generalizations. Indeed, this is one of the books I consider truly special, as it did more than elucidate the paradoxical limits/universal possibilities of logos, it helped me understand my own work and inspired me to complicate it, to mature.

By PBHyland
For those yearning for an exploration of poetry beyond a strict craft perspective, Bond's book is an invigorating arrival. Bond's depth of knowledge is formidable, and his observations are often thrilling and revelatory. This is a rare, exemplary collection of essays--a masterful engagement with poetry itself that may very well have lasting influence on conversations and thinking about how poems exist and the ways in which they enrich our lives.
