Thomas Sackville and the Shakespearean Glass Slipper: Book Two of A 'Third Way' Shakespeare Authorship Scenario, by Sabrina Feldman

HAS THE REAL SHAKESPEARE BEEN OVERLOOKED FOR FOUR CENTURIES? Records of William Shakespeare’s life are at odds with many authorial traits revealed in the Bard’s works, including the author’s specialized knowledge of the law, aristocratic sports, Italian geography and customs, and untranslated Italian, Greek, and French literary works. Even so, the Stratford actor kept the “Shakespeare” title for a century and a half after the authorship debate began, due to the lack of any more plausible authorship scenario. In 2011, Dr. Sabrina Feldman showed in The Apocryphal William Shakespeare that William Shakespeare is the most likely author of the ‘apocryphal’ Shakespeare plays and ‘bad quartos,’ and that members of the Elizabethan literati revered a major hidden court poet, most likely the statesman Thomas Sackville (1536-1608), who was subject to an aristocratic ‘stigma of print.’ In this sequel, Dr. Feldman introduces the case for Sackville as Shakespeare. Sackville’s youthful poetic works paved the way to the flowering of the late Elizabethan drama, and he later became a hidden poet. Despite being long overlooked as an authorship candidate, he had not only the specialized knowledge, unusual interests, habits of mind, personal traits, stylistic traits, and lifespan to be Shakespeare, but also the very high poetic ability.

Review
"Feldman is unquestionably convincing as a proponent of the pleasures of exploring the works from a new angle, 'discovering how many lesser known and seldom performed Shakespearean works take on an entirely new interest and meaning from a Sackvillian perspective.' ...gives Stratfordian skeptics a strong new contender for the man behind the works. An enthusiastic and unique assessment of the Shakespeare authorship question that, while still leaving the debate unresolved, may convince even open-minded Stratfordians of the plausibility of its analysis." -Kirkus Reviews

Feldman's second volume is as much fun as her first
By D. D. Montee
Having greatly enjoyed Ms. Feldman’s first volume of several years ago (The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One of a “Third Way” Shakespeare Authorship Scenario), I eagerly anticipated her Book Two—but not, I confess, without some trepidation. The first volume was chock full of fascinating detail and insight into the Golden Age of Modern English Drama; but once an author—particularly an “anti-Stratfordian”—displays in full view the theoretical axe that they wish to grind, more often than not they begin to lose my full attention and admiration. I’m not a dyed-in-the wool “Stratfordian”—I like to keep as open a mind as I can on the different proposals and perspectives of scholars as they examine the thorny issues of authorship in the Elizabethan/Jacobean plays—but I have to admit that none of the alternate scenarios offered by the advocates of Oxford, Bacon, Marlowe, Mary Sidney, et. al., have persuaded me, however intriguing and fascinating their arguments might prove.
That said, I’m pleased to report that Ms. Feldman’s Book Two is as entertaining and informative as her first volume. I think that I’m probably the perfect audience for both her theoretical approach as well as her wonderfully clear and unpretentious writing style: I’ve loved reading, performing in, directing, and publishing about William Shakespeare for decades. The questions, historical gaps, and biographical inconsistencies that nag at the anti-Stratfordians also nag at me; and yet, I certainly can find it within the realm of plausibility that the young country boy named Will Shakespeare could very well have been the natural theatrical genius that the Stratfordians argue for.
Ms. Feldman’s ingenious proposal offers a potential bridge between the two camps; and it does so with wonderful research, illuminating insights and a clear and breezy writing style that does not demand years of academic study and prior knowledge to follow. As Eric Sams (whose work Ms. Feldman refers to on occasion in the book) lamented years ago, Shakespearean scholarship and academia is unfortunately too often a closed and exclusive club, rather incestuous, repeating and building upon ideas that should long ago have been largely put to rest. (The so-called “bad quartos” being memorial reconstructions of good texts, to give one such example.) Ms. Feldman’s books disarmingly show the absurdities of many of these accepted ideas, while at the same time pointing us in new directions that more established and recognized Shakespearean scholars might themselves (and should) have directed us toward decades ago—if they hadn’t been so busy reading and re-hashing their colleagues’ books ad infinitum.
Sabrina Feldman’s “day job” is at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (impressive enough on its own!); she does her work on Shakespeare out of pure love for the subject—and it shows in these wonderfully entertaining and enlightening books. I highly recommend them both…but read The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One first! Even if you don’t completely accept her hypotheses on the origins of these classics of dramatic literature, you will learn an amazing amount about the plays, their creators, and the age that gave them birth.

... is endlessly fascinating and this is one of my favorite takes on it
By Randolph Scott
The question of Shakespearean authorship is endlessly fascinating and this is one of my favorite
takes on it. The author's earlier book "The Apocryphal William Shakespeare" looks at the often-
overlooked works attributed to Shakespeare that were not included in the canon. For me it changed
my thinking about Shakespeare as much as Elaine Pagel's "The Gnostic Gospels" changed my thinking
about Christianity, and I return to it again and again. Here in Book Two she extends the argument
and makes a compelling case for a new candidate. Despite a wealth of research the book is fun to
read- her style is always engaging and often very persuasive. Very highly recommended.

It's bigger on the inside!
By Rory1959
Dr. Feldman's previous book, about the Shakespeare Apocrypha, was a great read because there was so much to it - review of play after play, poem after poem, evaluation of many more "data points" than any other argument about the Authorship Question that I have seen. This book is the same. As always when looking back 400 years, there's a certain amount of speculation, but that's always clearly stated. Many chapters, though, are startling in the depth of the argument. You'll find that Sackville was familiar with the setting of the play, then that he was familiar with the sources, then with historic events that seem to be alluded (Sackville's dog even makes an appearance), then with the philosophical concepts the play seems to incorporate, then with the subjects Shakespeare chose in creating allegories. When that's all done, there are parallel quotes from Sackville's few extant works to many of Shakespeare's works - so many that you'd think Shakepeare had a Sackville "Quote of the Day" calendar on his writing table. Dr. Feldman's argument covers about 300 pages, but there's so much information on every page that you would think it's many more than that. It's an excellent read for anyone!

Great backround of todays technology
By Girlieeee
This is a book in a larger series of books called “Lightning Guides” in which each book explores a different complex topic. This book is about the history of technology and the leaps and bounds that were made through the years and the people behind them to make the world what it is today. Some of the interesting topics and people that are highlighted in the book are morse code, radio frequencies, the Wright brothers, Apple, and Mark Zuckerberg. This is a very insightful book that can be picked up like a magazine to enjoy a short article or two, or you can sit down and read the entire book in a couple of days. I like the format and the size (it's smaller than a typical paperback), and that it's easy reading with some great background of the topic. *I received a sample of this item in return for an honest and unbiased review*

I think this book has a lot of great snippets of different people
By Amanda H
I thought this was a really interesting book on the advancement of technology, and those behind each idea. I am a homeschooling mother of 9, and I think this book has a lot of great snippets of different people. It gives a short breakdown of different technological feats and the man or woman behind them. I found it hard to just read through as a book, but it would be a great book to use as a starter for further studies. I plan on using this for study assignments for my children to read, and then find more information on that specific person. This book goes from the light bulb, to the cotton gin, and up to Google and Apple.

I received this book free in exchange for my review.

WOW! Better than I thought!
By Melodie
This is actually a fantastic book that explores technology inventors from the last 100 years. There is so much information in this book that it is almost overwhelming. But the stories or descriptions of each of these inventors is fascinating and there are little-known facts in each of the individual biography’s. If you are a history buff, IT person or just someone who is looking to catch up on the last 100 years of innovation, this is a quick and easy read. Pictures and text are well done and the overall layout of the book is easy to interpret and digest.

Mechanical Movements, Powers, Devices and Appliances, Used in Constructive and Operative Machinery and the Mechanical Arts (Classic Reprint

Excerpt from Mechanical Movements, Powers, Devices and Appliances, Used in Constructive and Operative Machinery and the Mechanical Arts

The need for an illustrated and condensed work of reference for the inventor, the mechanical student, the artisan, and the workingman. with the ambition of an inquiring mind, has become not only apparent to teachers of mechanics, but a real want among all who are interested in mechanical thought and work.

It is an interest the growth of which has been greatly encouraged by the rapid development of the inventive and mechanical arts during the past half century.

The increasing inquiries from inventors and mechanics in regard to the principles and facts in constructive and operative mechanics have induced the author to gather such illustrations as have been found available on the subject of mechanical motions, devices, and appliances, and to place them in a form for ready reference with only sufficient text to explain the general principles of construction and operation, and as a partial exhibit of the mechanical forms in general use, with a view to place the largest amount of illustrated information within the limited means of the humblest seeker after mechanical knowledge.

The field of illustrated mechanics seems almost unlimited, and with the present effort the author has endeavored partially to fill a void and thus to help the inquirer in ideal and practical mechanics in the true line of research.

Mechanical details can best be presented to the mind by diagrams or illustrated forms, and this has been generally acknowledged to be the quickest and most satisfactory method of conveying the exact conditions of mechanical action and construction.

Imagination Required
By Casey Drudge
This book is best used by someone who has the ability to mentally conceptualize the various mechanical concepts contained therein. Although there are a very wide variety of devices illustrated, most of them leave their specific operation up to the imagination of the reader because of the minimal descriptions offered. Having said that, this book is not meant to be a specific design aid, but rather a means to introduce the reader to the overall concept of the devices covered. And that it does quite well, although there is a possibility that most people who buy this book may very well feel that there is something lacking. I, myself, do not regret buying this book.

Save you money....see the free British video that this is parodying
By B. J Robbins
Have I heard right!!!! Barber and Rylance providing a genuine biography of Willilam Shakespeare and giving him credit for the plays with his name on them? This is incredible since Barber thinks Marlowe wrote the plays....Kit Marlowe and terrific playwright who died in 1593, so could not have written the Canon...and Rylance, a douber, who appeared in "Anonymous" and who obviously thinks Oxford wrote the plays, yes that Oxford who died in 1604, before some of the greatest tragedies and the 3 romances and Henry VIII came out.

You'd be better off watching the British serious that this book is parodying. Fifty, I think, experts provide expert opinion on various aspects of Shakespeare's life. They don't have an ax to grind like these two buffoons.

A sweet read!
By Karen C Groves
This was a sweet story concerning Darcy's letter to Elizabeth at Rosings. The twist is that she wrote him back, and the story is about the reactions of both.

I would have liked it to have been extended a bit as it seemed a tad rushed toward the end. Needed a bit more editing. And, please note, I have seen many Regency authors use the word angst, however, first usage was circa 1942.

All in all, though, it was a nice, enjoyable read. I look forward to Ms. Grace's future writings.

A refreshing cup of sweet tea?...while reading...letters?
By S. L. Majczan
Yes, it is a very short excerpt/variation on that insulting proposal of marriage to Elizabeth and the reaction on both parts while Darcy is visiting his aunt in Kent. I read it in about an hour while lingering over my breakfast.

We all know of Darcy's long letter in which he defends himself against the charges laid at his door by Elizabeth in that totally unexpected refusal of his proposal. Propriety has already been ignored when she accepts a letter from a man to whom she is not engaged. But then Elizabeth meets Col. Fitzwilliam, and in discussing Georgiana (or is he?) when he uses a suggestion with a double meaning that a letter might serve the purpose of uplifting a certain depressed soul.

Now Elizabeth has something to consider, but if she is to act on it then how does she get a letter into his hands? He is due to leave Rosings. She doesn't find him walking the grove. But then Charlotte announces a dinner party. Read carefully as there are hidden meanings in much of the communication. Yes, we always want more but this was a sweet little sip of possible communication between our favorite two. Enjoy!

A sweet little morsel....
By Erika L Hoemke
....though leaving me with a giant desire to know more!!!! Ugh the bane of the short story!!! They can be a respite from the long, all consuming novels, bringing glimpses of stories for just a taste!!! Though I have to say Four Days in April is a delightful torture to read, it leaves me with wanting to read more of how ODC sketches each other's characters better and forms an attachment. Miss Grace is such a delight and has such a way with words in which to swirl her stories to life. I look forward to reading more of her spellbinding stories of ODC!!! I wholeheartedly recommend this short story to all JAFFers!!

The Art of Memoir, by Mary Karr

Credited with sparking the current memoir explosion, Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club spent more than a year at the top of the New York Times list. She followed with two other smash bestsellers: Cherry and Lit, which were critical hits as well.

For thirty years Karr has also taught the form, winning teaching prizes at Syracuse.  (The writing program there produced such acclaimed authors as Cheryl Strayed, Keith Gessen, and Koren Zailckas.) In The Art of Memoir, she synthesizes her expertise as professor and therapy patient, writer and spiritual seeker, recovered alcoholic and “black belt sinner,” providing a unique window into the mechanics and art of the form that is as irreverent, insightful, and entertaining as her own work in the genre.

Anchored by excerpts from her favorite memoirs and anecdotes from fellow writers’ experience, The Art of Memoir lays bare Karr’s own process. (Plus all those inside stories about how she dealt with family and friends get told— and the dark spaces in her own skull probed in depth.) As she breaks down the key elements of great literary memoir, she breaks open our concepts of memory and identity, and illuminates the cathartic power of reflecting on the past; anybody with an inner life or complicated history, whether writer or reader, will relate.

Joining such classics as Stephen King’s On Writing and Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, The Art of Memoir is an elegant and accessible exploration of one of today’s most popular literary forms—a tour de force from an accomplished master pulling back the curtain on her craft.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: Thanks to celebrated works like The Liar’s Club, Lit, and Cherry, many would argue that Mary Karr put memoirs on the map. She has a thing or two to say about that in The Art of Memoir, a distillation of over 30 years of writing and teaching the form. While it certainly should be required reading for anyone wanting to become the next Cheryl Strayed (whom Karr mentored), it has much on offer for those of us who have no intentions of laying ourselves bare on the page. By examining her favorite memoirs in her signature smart, irreverent style--and with contagious affection--Karr explains why they resonate with us: Memoirs are a means to make sense of a life; they reveal the sometimes skewed ways in which we see ourselves, and how those perceptions betray our frailties, and our strengths. If you’re wondering if Karr touches on charlatan “memoirists” like infamous Oprah punching bag, James Frey, she does. But only to point out the important distinctions between the malleability of memory, and simply making stuff up. Also, why are we so gullible in believing those fictions? A warning that your reading list is going to grow the further you venture into this book—Karr’s love for memoirs like Vladimir Nabokov’s Speak, Memory and Maxine Hong Kingston’s Woman Warrior just oozes off the page, and it’s hard not getting some of that on you. You’ll be better off if you just let it. --Erin Kodicek

Perfect, like a personal visit with an admired professional
By R. Barry
This is far more than a wonderful book about writing memoir. It's like an intimate conversation with an admired professional whose passion is reading and whose vocation is studying how people understand their own lives and choose to reveal them. It is a feast for anyone who loves books (and definitely not just for writers and writing students).

Fans of Mary Karr's three memoirs will find fascinating information about what she left out and why. They will recognize her unique and compelling voice on every page and proceed through the book eager to read what comes next.

She analyzes in helpful detail the authors and works she most admires, often adding fascinating anecdotes about them. She examines some of the high-profile failures as well. Karr shares background stories about her own writing, including the physical toll it has taken.

What I most want to tell you is this. I read this book in one sitting, and when I finish this review I'm going to reread it. Then I'm going to reread Nabokov's "Speak, Memory." I will read anything Mary Karr wants to write.

A must read for anyone writing a memoir
By Chris Edwards
I bought Mary Karr's "Liars Club" three years ago when I first began writing my memoir. I loved her writing style and was both inspired and intimidated. I just finished this book and it does such a great job breaking down key components to the craft using examples from Karr's own work as well as works by other authors from classic to contemporary. If you are writing a memoir or thinking about writing one I strongly suggest picking this up. You will learn about the importance of voice and how to find yours and stay true to it. The art of showing, not telling (which is where I need the most help). How to use/select specific details to make scenes feel more carnal and truer to the reader. And get advice on things like how to handle writing about family and topics that may be sensitive to them. You can really tell that the author is a teacher–some chapters feel like they could actually have been taken from a lesson plan–but that's what makes this book so much better than some of the others I've read about writing memoirs that were penned by agents or other industry professional types. This book isn't just a list of general tips/advice. Mary Karr is a true master of the craft and digs deeper, providing examples to give the reader a better understanding. It's almost like sitting in on one of her classes. Which after reading this book, I'd really like to do. I wish this book had come out three years ago before I started writing but now I am using what I learned to revise and edit the manuscript I have. The only negative for me was one or two of the chapters focused too much on a particular author who's style and voice didn't resonate with my taste (Nabokov for example) so I glossed over those pages. But everybody's taste in books are different. That said, in my humble opinion, this is the best book written on the craft of memoir that I have read to date.

I have to say she has spoiled me for beautiful memoirs. She is a master of the craft ...
By Lori
I have been an avid reader of Mary Karr's work for almost twenty years so I was very excited when this book was published. I have to say she has spoiled me for beautiful memoirs. She is a master of the craft and this book is a present she has wrapped up and given to her readers – and to all readers who love memoir.

The Art of Memoir is also a treasure trove of invaluable information for any writer, but as a reader, I felt like I'd just crashed the private party of every memoirist's secret place. AOM made me feel privy to insider secrets and my appreciation of the genre went even deeper. She delves into her favorite memorists' efforts and explains what she thought worked and what didn’t work and why. She speaks to writers and tells them to keep their focus on their readers and to try to craft beautiful, carnal pictures/events so that readers might want to re-read their memoir (to Karr, therein lies the beauty of great memoir: re-reading). I appreciate any author who takes care to deliver to his/her readers a beautiful reading experience and clearly, Karr does.

Karr even puts her own writing under the microscope and examines her life/life’s work full throttle and you get a front row seat to see how her writer-mind ferrets out her own truth and how she arrives at said truth with such beauty on the page (revise, revise, revise!). She speaks about her own fear of failure when she is writing, which gives readers a glimpse into the writing process we readers think just magically appears on the page.

If you are already a reader of Karr’s works, know that AOM is like getting a "Behind the Scenes" at the end of your favorite movie. For me, she answered twenty plus years’ worth of questions I had about her three memoirs and it was, truly, magical. If you’ve ever wished you could attend one of her classes at Syracuse, you now have it in your hands! If this is your first Karr read, you have some catching up to do. Lucky you! (She also writes spectacular poetry!)

Henry James, OM (15 April 1843 – 28 February 1916) was an American writer who spent most of his writing career in Britain. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character’s point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators brought a new depth to narrative fiction. James contributed significantly to literary criticism, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their view of the world. James claimed that a text must first and foremost be realistic and contain a representation of life that is recognisable to its readers. Good novels, to James, show life in action and are, most importantly, interesting. In addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel, biography, autobiography, and criticism, and wrote plays. James alternated between America and Europe for the first twenty years of his life; eventually he settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916.

About the Author
Henry James (1843-1916), American novelist and critic, was an innovator in technique and a distinctive prose stylist. More than any previous writer, James refined the technique of narrating a novel from the point of view of a character, thereby laying the foundations of modern stream-of-consciousness fiction. Among his many acclaimed novels are "The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, The Golden Bowl, "and "The Wings of the Dove.".

Very quotable, very intelligent and ultimately too rich
By Phred
I think it was Christopher, the first to post an Amazon review of this the Kindle Edition of Views and who brought it to my attention. I got it on the theory that much of Henry James can be too densely written for my taste, but that I wanted something by him I could finish. This taste has whetted my appetite, and has confirmed my cautions.

This short selection of reviews by James provided me with more quotable material in fewer pages than any writer this side of Shakespeare. By the end I was fighting my way through needlessly convoluted sentence structure and a notion that Henry James really like to hear himself.
In an early selection he describes a writer as: "not offensively clever" a wonderfully clever turn of phrase.

He has little good to say of Walt Whitman saying of him: " He tell us in the lines quoted that the words of his book are nothing. To our perception they are everything and very little at that." Nicely written burn.

What exactly are we to make of:" ...the critics taking notes as we may in the interests of truth, George Elliot belongs in that class of pre-eminent writers in relation to whom the imagination comes to self-consciousness only to find itself in subjugation." Say Whaa?

For at least 2/3 of this brief selection I was in a state of astonishment that Henry James could use such a vast vocabulary with such precision. And then... and then. James will often scold a writer for phrases that "Smell too much of the candle?" a lovely way to describe an obviously forced but intended to be casually remark. Yet James's reputation is that he would labor over his texts only slightly more than he expected of his reader.

I will be reconsidering writers such as Kipling, given the adulation he receives in this collection. I am all the more leery that Henry James can write with too much smell of the candle. Further he can be complex for no obvious reason except to fill more space on the way to making a point.

Henry James wrote for money.
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
Date of the collection: 1908. Each review is preceded by its original publication date.

George Eliot's poetry? Tennyson's dramas? An outright pan of Walt Whitman, and OUR MUTUAL FRIEND? Are the reviews Henry James wrote in the 1870s and 1880s worth reading today?

Consider this, on the essays of Swinburne:

Mr. Swinburne is a dozen times too verbose; at least one-half of his phrases are what the French call phrases in the air. One-half of his sentence is always a repetition, for mere fancy's sake and nothing more, of the meaning of the other half—a play upon its words, an echo, a reflection, a duplication. This trick, of course, makes a writer formidably prolix. What we have called the absence of the moral sense of the writer of these essays is, however, their most disagreeable feature. By this we do not mean that Mr. Swinburne is not didactic, nor edifying, nor devoted to pleading the cause of virtue. We mean simply that his moral plummet does not sink at all, and that when he pretends to drop it he is simply dabbling in the relatively very shallow pool of the picturesque.

Henry James liked metaphors and similes. Some of those he comes up with are very striking:

Our Mutual Friend is, to our perception, the poorest of Mr. Dickens's works. And it is poor with the poverty not of momentary embarrassment, but of permanent exhaustion. It is wanting in inspiration. For the last ten years it has seemed to us that Mr. Dickens has been unmistakeably forcing himself. Bleak House was forced; Little Dorrit was laboured; the present work is dug out as with a spade and pickaxe.

As I look over my highlights, I find this general statement on the value of criticism, which holds as true today as it did in the 1870s:

"... The tendencies of our civilisation are certainly not such as foster a preponderance of morbid speculation. Our national genius inclines yearly more and more to resolve itself into a vast machine for sifting, in all things, the wheat from the chaff. American society is so shrewd, that we may safely allow it to make application of the truths of the study. Only let us keep it supplied with the truths of the study, and not with the half-truths of the forum. Let criticism take the stream of truth at its source, and then practice can take it half-way down. When criticism takes it half-way down, practice will come poorly off."

Excerpt from Railroad Accidents Their Cause and Prevention

Much has been said and written during recent years about the increasing number of rail road accidents in this country - their cause and what action should be taken by the government, the railroads and the employees to reduce them and the consequent loss of life and limb resulting therefrom. Believing that if the cause of our many accidents were properly understood more care would be taken by the corporations, employees and persons at fault to reduce the number, I shall try to point out in the following pages what investigation has shown me to be the cause of many accidents and how their reoccurrence could, I think, be prevented.

In the transaction of the business of a railroad its first and highest duty is to the passengers, to carry them safely and speedily; next, to take care of the property entrusted to it for transportation, and for which it is practically an insurer against everything but the act of God or the public enemy, and deliver it with reasonable dispatch to the consignee in practically the same condition as that in which it is received.

Prescient but only because common sense rules
By Kris
This very old document is chock-full of short-form case studies of railroad accidents and their causes. It is written for the railroad worker of the early 20th century using examples from both 19th and 20th century accidents. Common sense prevails in the explanations, for the most part, but the frank presentation of the vast majority of the problems of that period's railway safety problems are still applicable today. From simple dreadful mistakes passengers make on the platform to exploding steam engine boilers to signal failures, this is a comprehensive commentary on railway safety of the early 20th century for just a buck.

Decent book
By Gene Sargeant
it was a book that covered a lot of factual information. I felt as though the author was in a sense spending most of his time finding fault with railroad companies most of the time. the appendix of the train rules were very good.

Old time common sense.
By MikeyB
I gave this 5 stars. It was just common sense things that went wrong that injured someone. Still happens today. Easy reading without getting into too many details. As a person who is into railroading and work on railroad equipment, I really enjoyed this. Shows that people did stupid things even so long ago, but instead of doing it in your car, you trusted your life to someone else to get you there, in a train, just like flying today, and you have to hope they can make the right decision all the time.

From the Author
"As life nears its end with me, I find myself meditating more and more upon the mystery of its nature and origin, yet without the least hope that I can find out the ways of the Eternal in this or in any other world. In these studies I fancy I am about as far from mastering the mystery as the ant which I saw this morning industriously exploring a small section of the garden walk is from getting a clear idea of the geography of the North American Continent. But the ant was occupied and was apparently happy, and she must have learned something about a small fraction of that part of the earth's surface.'' ''My imagination and ingrained humanism are appealed to by the facts and methods of natural history. I find something akin to poetry and religion (using the latter word in its non-mythological sense, as indicating the sum of mystery and reverence we feel in the presence of the great facts of life an death) in the shows of day and night, and in my excursions to fields and woods. The love of nature is a different thing from the love of science, though the two may go together. To the rigid man of science this is frank mysticism; but without a sense of the unknown and unknowable, life is flat and barren. Without the emotion of the beautiful, the sublime, the mysterious, there is no art, no religion, and no literature. How to get from the clod underfoot to the brain and consciousness of man without invoking something outside of, and superior to, natural laws, is the question. For my own part I content myself with the thought of some unknown and doubtless unknowable tendency or power in the elements themselves - a kind of universal mind pervading living matter and the reason of its living, through which the whole drama of evolution is brought about."

Thought provoking
By Jere A. Houser
This is a little hard to read, but it will make you think about life and it's many mysteries. Though I'm not sure I agree with all of his thoughts. However, if we had to agree with everything we read, we would probably never learn anything new or never read anything.

Burroughs - man of letters and naturalist

John Burroughs was a respected man of letters and a dedicated naturalist. This is one of Burroughs's last statements of his naturalist philosophy.

The Breath of Life
By Joe McMahon
I am a great devotee of John Burroughs, one of the early naturalist writers. Most of his book concern his observations as he traveled around New England. Things were very different in the late nineteenth century. This book is very different. In this he attempts to.explain the difference between the living and non-living. ( not living and dead). It is not easy to read and understand on the first reading. Some of his ideas look a little strange after over 100 years, but are very worth reading and digesting.them.
